We are currently seeking an Sr. Fluid Power Engineer / Designer to work out of our office in Guelph, Ontario.

The Sr. Fluid Power Engineer / Designer is responsible for leading the design, development, analysis, documentation, and implementation of complex hydraulic, pneumatic, and fluid conveyance systems. This position provides technical ownership from concept through commissioning, including system architecture, component selection, calculations, modelling, schematics, detailed drawings, bills of materials, design reviews, prototype support, testing, troubleshooting, and customer-facing technical guidance. The role requires strong independent judgment, advanced knowledge of fluid power principles, and the ability to balance performance, manufacturability, reliability, safety, cost, and schedule requirements. As a senior member of the technical team, this position also supports standards development, continuous improvement, mentoring of junior staff, and collaboration across engineering, manufacturing, sales, service, quality, suppliers, and customers.

Responsibilities:
- Lead the design, engineering, and development of fluid power systems for mobile and industrial applications.
- Develop complete technical packages using SolidWorks, DraftSight, PDM, and Automation Studios.
- Perform engineering calculations and analysis related to pressure, flow, velocity, heat generation, component sizing, hose and tube routing, pump and motor selection, valve sizing, filtration, reservoir design, and system performance.
- Own and approve design concepts and component selections to ensure solutions meet customer requirements, applicable standards, safety expectations, manufacturability, reliability, and cost targets.
- Translate customer requirements, field conditions, application data, and equipment constraints into practical fluid power solutions that are robust, serviceable, and commercially viable.
- Lead technical design reviews, risk assessments, drawing reviews, and release approvals while ensuring compliance with internal engineering standards, customer specifications, and applicable industry requirements.
- Provide senior-level troubleshooting support for hydraulic and fluid conveyance systems, including root cause analysis, corrective action recommendations, field issue resolution, and support for warranty or performance concerns.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, purchasing, quality, service, sales, suppliers, and customers to resolve technical issues, improve build efficiency, validate designs, and ensure successful project execution.
- Act as a technical resource and mentor for designers, technologists, apprentices, and other team members by providing guidance, reviewing work, sharing best practices, and supporting technical skill development.
- Develop and improve engineering standards, design templates, documentation practices, component libraries, preferred parts, and repeatable design methods for fluid power projects.
- Support estimating, quoting, technical proposals, project planning, and change management by providing design input, technical scope definition, labour estimates, and risk identification.
- Maintain current knowledge of hydraulic and fluid power technology, including pumps, motors, cylinders, valves, manifolds, fittings, hoses, tubing, filtration, sealing, instrumentation, and control interfaces.
- Travel to customer sites, supplier locations, factories, or field locations as required to gather requirements, assess equipment, support installation, troubleshoot systems, or assist with commissioning
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering would be considered an asset.
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering.
- Significant experience in fluid power, hydraulic system design, mechanical design, mobile equipment, industrial equipment, or a related technical environment.
- Advanced working knowledge of hydraulic and fluid conveyance systems, including pumps, motors, cylinders, valves, manifolds, accumulators, filtration, reservoirs, fittings, hoses, tubing, seals, and related components.
- Strong proficiency with SolidWorks, DraftSight, PDM, and related design/documentation software, with the ability to create, review, release, and control complex engineering documentation.
- Demonstrated ability to perform engineering calculations, interpret technical requirements, select components, develop schematics, review drawings, and troubleshoot system performance issues.
- Ability to lead design reviews, challenge assumptions, identify technical risks, and make sound recommendations using experience, engineering judgment, and practical manufacturing knowledge.
- Experience with Automation Studios
- Strong understanding of manufacturability, serviceability, quality, safety, cost control, and reliability as they relate to custom engineered fluid power systems.
- Experience supporting prototype builds, testing, commissioning, field troubleshooting, customer technical discussions, and corrective action activities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical information clearly to customers, suppliers, production teams, service teams, and non-technical stakeholders.
- Proven ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, support multiple projects, and deliver accurate technical work within established timelines.
- Ability to mentor, support, and review the work of junior designers, technologists, apprentices, or other technical team members.
