Reports To: Executive Director or designate

Job Description

Tl’azt’en Nation is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Manager / Language Instructor to support the revitalization, teaching, and growth of Dakelh language programming within the Nation.

This position combines language instruction, program coordination, staff support, cultural programming, and community engagement. The successful candidate will help develop and deliver language learning opportunities for community members, staff, youth, families, and learners at different levels.

This is a meaningful role for someone who is passionate about language, culture, community connection, and passing knowledge to future generations.

About the Role

The Manager / Language Instructor will support the planning, development, delivery, and evaluation of language programming. This includes teaching language classes, developing learning materials, supporting language resources, working with Elders and Knowledge Keepers, and helping build a strong language program that reflects Tl’azt’en values, teachings, and priorities.

The successful candidate will be organized, respectful, culturally grounded, and able to work with learners of all ages and abilities.

Duties and Responsibilities

Develop, coordinate, and deliver Dakelh language classes and learning opportunities.

Teach language lessons to community members, staff, youth, families, and other learners.

Create lesson plans, learning materials, handouts, activities, and language resources.

Support beginner, intermediate, and advanced learners where appropriate.

Work with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, fluent speakers, and cultural advisors to ensure language programming is accurate, respectful, and culturally appropriate.

Support language revitalization planning, including program goals, schedules, activities, and priorities.

Coordinate language and culture workshops, events, learning circles, and community activities.

Support intergenerational learning opportunities involving Elders, youth, families, and community members.

Maintain language program files, attendance records, reports, learning materials, and documentation.

Prepare program updates, reports, and summaries for leadership, funders, and internal planning.

Support funding proposals, budgets, and reporting related to language and culture programming.

Supervise or support language and culture staff, contractors, or volunteers where applicable.

Promote language use within the workplace and community.

Collaborate with Education, Health, Social Development, Elders programming, and other departments to include language and culture in community programming.

Support the development of language resources, recordings, curriculum materials, and cultural learning tools.

Maintain confidentiality and respectful handling of cultural knowledge, recordings, and language materials.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Strong Dakelh language knowledge, fluency, or advanced language skills are strongly preferred.

Experience teaching, mentoring, or supporting language learners.

Experience working with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, fluent speakers, youth, families, or community members.

Knowledge of Tl’azt’en Nation culture, traditions, values, and community priorities.

Experience coordinating programs, workshops, classes, or community events.

Leadership or supervisory experience is considered an asset.

Strong communication, facilitation, organization, and planning skills.

Ability to develop lesson plans, learning materials, reports, schedules, and program documentation.

Ability to work respectfully with sensitive cultural knowledge and community information.

Computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Outlook, email, and basic reporting tools.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Post secondary education in Indigenous language, education, linguistics, cultural studies, or a related field is considered an asset, but lived experience, fluency, and cultural knowledge may be considered in place of formal education.

Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence is preferred.

Satisfactory Criminal Record Check may be required.
