The base salary will be $62,480 - $89,040 per annum*. Starting salary will be aligned with the successful candidate’s experience, skills, and demonstrated qualifications.

Based on a 35 hour work week.

About Us

The Biotron’s mission is to provide excellence in microscopy services including research, image analysis and training to the Western community as well as local, national and international research and industrial communities.

Responsibilities

The Research Technologist will apply their advanced technical knowledge and skills to perform a variety of complex procedures and experiments and to support the effective operation of the Biotron research facility. The role contributes to all aspects of research activities, including staffing and client coordination, and performs and records the results of specialized techniques, including microscopy and digital imaging. The role will contribute to the compilation, analysis, and presentation of results for dissemination to clients and stakeholders. The Research Technologist will provide expertise and make recommendations regarding optimal methodologies, experimental approaches, and equipment to support research objectives.

The role will provide technical guidance in the development, execution, and analysis of research projects, contributing to the achievement of innovative outcomes associated with the research program. The Research Technologist will support the ongoing operation and optimization of the facility by assisting with the installation, modification, troubleshooting, servicing, and upgrading of laboratory equipment and instrumentation.

The Research Technologist will coordinate and deliver training and hands-on technical support related to laboratory techniques and specialized equipment, including microscopy platforms, and will provide guidance and oversight to students and users. The role will collaborate with researchers and clients to support consultations, training, and fee-for-service activities.

The role will contribute to the effective operation of the laboratory by supporting inventory management, procurement of supplies, and maintaining laboratory spaces in a project-ready state, while ensuring compliance with safety standards and established protocols. The Research Technologist will supervise students and support staff, facilitate communication with clients and users, and provide expertise to ensure timely, high-quality research and service outcomes.

Qualifications

Education:

Master’s Degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., cell biology, biomedical science, imaging sciences) or equivalent combination of education and experience
Specialized training or certifications in advanced microscopy (light and/or confocal microscopy) and imaging techniques considered an asset

Experience:

5 years of related experience in a cell biology research laboratory environment
Demonstrated experience working with advanced laboratory instrumentation, including a broad range of advanced imaging and microscopy techniques and in the preparation of samples for confocal microscopy
Experience supporting multiple research projects and/or client-based research services
Experience in a shared research facility or fee-for-service environment is preferred
Experience training and supporting students, researchers, or external clients on specialized equipment and techniques would be an asset

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

In-depth knowledge of research experimental design, methodologies, and analysis, with the ability to adapt, refine, and troubleshoot approaches to support evolving research objectives
Advanced technical expertise in laboratory instrumentation and specialized research equipment, including specimen preparation and operation of microscopy and imaging systems (e.g., light and confocal microscopy, image analysis platforms, optics and filters)
Strong foundational knowledge in relevant scientific disciplines (e.g., cell biology, immunohistochemistry), with the ability to interpret experimental results and provide informed recommendations to resolve technical and research-related challenges
Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex technical and experimental issues, diagnose equipment malfunctions, and implement or coordinate appropriate solutions
Ability to provide technical consultation and guidance to researchers and clients regarding experimental approaches, methodologies, sample preparation, and equipment selection
Experience contributing to the collection, analysis, interpretation, and synthesis of complex research data, and supporting the preparation of reports, presentations, publications, or grant applications
Advanced analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to evaluate information, synthesize findings, and make sound decisions or recommendations
Strong attention to detail, with the ability to manage, analyze, and synthesize large volumes of data while ensuring accuracy, completeness, and adherence to established protocols
Ability to identify key findings from research data and clearly summarize and communicate results in written and verbal formats
Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly and effectively convey complex technical and scientific concepts to diverse audiences, including novice users, researchers, and clients, and to produce clear and accurate technical documentation
Demonstrated ability to collaborate across internal and external stakeholders to support research and client service outcomes
Ability to train, mentor, and support students, staff, and research users, including providing instruction on laboratory techniques, equipment, and best practices
Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, work in a fast-paced environment, and meet tight deadlines
High level of initiative and accountability, with the ability to work independently and follow through on complex assignments
Proven ability to develop effective working relationships, interacting with others in a professional, respectful, and client-focused manner
Problem-solving mindset, with a demonstrated ability to investigate issues, seek input, and recommend practical and innovative solutions
Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite, with advanced proficiency in specialized software used for data acquisition, analysis, and imaging (e.g., ImageJ, Imaris, or similar platforms)
Strong understanding of laboratory operations, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements, with the ability to ensure compliance with legislated and Western safety standards
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in handling sensitive information
Familiarity with University policies and procedures is an asset
