Full job description

The Shuswap Nation Tribal Council (SNTC) was established in 1980 as a collective effort of Secwépemc Chiefs to advocate for Aboriginal rights and advance Nation-building initiatives.

The Vision of SNTC is: One Nation, healthy, unified and engaged, grounded in traditional laws, culture, values and language.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The SNTC seeks a full-time Communications Specialist to enhance digital, social, internal, and community outreach, emphasizing cultural protocols.

Requirements include a relevant degree, experience, cultural knowledge, and relationship-building skills.

Reporting to the Tribal Director, the Communications Specialist offers leadership and oversight for SNTC’s website management, social media strategy, community engagement, and supporting internal and external communications, with a focus on strengthening Secwépemc voice and Nation-building efforts.

Key responsibilities include:

Develop and implement social media strategy
Create internal communication guides and support cross-team collaboration
Update and maintain SNTC website and digital content
Strengthen community relations and promote events
Prepare newsletters and communications materials
Advise on communication strategies

QUALIFICATIONS

Degree/diploma in communications or related field
3+ years’ experience in communications including developing and implementing communications strategies, projects and guidelines.
Proficiency using MS Office Suite, current technology, design tools and AI.
Strong writing, editing, and digital skills
Team player with cultural sensitivity
Ability to manage multiple projects
Ability to transform complex messages into clear, and engaging content.
Knowledge of Secwépemc language/culture and First Nations experience an asset
Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence required

* An equivalent combination of lived and cultural experience may be considered.

Preference may be given for:

Knowledge of Secwépemc language, governance, and protocols.
Understanding of storytelling as a governance and healing practice.
Experience working with a First Nations organization.
Strong cultural or community experience.

Requirements

Based at the SNTC office located located on Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc territory, situated within the unceded ancestral lands of the Secwépemc Nation.
Some travel required.
Must maintain a Valid BC Driver's Licence, and reliable transportation.
Background/vulnerable sector checks.
