ABC Head Start

Working with ABC Head Start Society has been an absolute pleasure. Over the years I have made true connections with all employees and I'm so lucky to say that I feel genuinely respected and cared for by my supervisor and co-workers.
Work can be wildly fast paced and a bit messy at times, but I've learned so much from this. There is never any pressure from the "higher ups" and you are always offered support when needed. I feel so lucky to work here!!

I had high hopes working here considering it's supposed to be a non-profit. I want to begin by saying that the people I work with directly are wonderful. There is a lot of support and collaboration between coworkers at the same level, and we are often able to 'weather the storms' that management creates for us to have to deal with. Executive director and management team are absolutely awful. Tone-deaf and never actually listen to employees and their concerns for the children's well-being or employee well-being. If you value yourself as a professional and want to actually do your job, do not work here.

Due to provincial funding cuts there  has been a shift over the years to acquire additional funding through PUFF funded children. Educational requirements for staff are low, staff training is limited, turnover is high, stress level is high, staff morale is often low. While ratio is better than daycares, classrooms often do not have the resources required or access to specialists seen in other agencies. Kids can fall through the cracks here due to lack of support. Definitely a disconnect between upper levels, head office and at site level.

A very poor work environment! My immediate team was fantastic. Upper management was disconnected from our team and experienced a high level of turnover. Poor communication with staff. I found much support from others in my field but never from management. Was without a supervisor for the first 2 months of my employ. My feeling is that the company has been undergoing many changes but not keeping its employees abreast of the information as it transitions. Would never work for them again.

I started as a temp employee and was able to quickly secure a position with job security and advancement opportunity. Working with the families is very rewarding, and working for a charity too.

This was a great job which allowed me to go into children's homes and teach English as a second language as well as helping children who had difficulties with speech. 

It gave me a variety of work each day and allowed me to schedule appointments with families when they were available.

I found being a social worker at ABC Head Start to be an unrewarding position.  At the beginning of the school year it is very busy and challenging preparing for the services provided to the children, obtaining consents, etc.  Within a couple months the work (social work) aspect of the job did not seem very relevant.

No values or integrity. Overworked burned staff called babies. No follow through on promises. Top heavy, Unorganized , unprofessional. Kids dont count

Toxic work environment, wouldn't recommend as an employer.
Poor communication.
Misdirected funds.
Classroom sizes too large.
Lack of support top down.
