What is the best part of working at the company?
Absolutely the worst place I've ever worked in my 20 yrs of being in the trades.  This place is gross immature and childish.  It union so your a number thats it management is a complete joke.  House cats!!! Most of them have nvr worked anywhere out but that kitty kitter box they think they know it all but just end up lookin stupid 95% of the time but still think there the greatest since sliced bread.  It's pretty ridiculous.  They protect the weak and lazy and beat on the hard workin ppl. The only thing remotely good about this place is there is a decent pay check kinds sorta.  But your selling your sould and self respect for that.  They want you to break there.  Ðo not work there!!! I worked nights for 9 yrs just to stay away from the management and intitled day shift whiners.  

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Everything the place probably took 5 yrs off my life.  Best thing I ever did was quit.  Don't waste your time and apply here you will regret it for the rest of your life.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
High schoolers are more mature.  These ppl write on the bathroom walls about each other lol if thats not saying something we'll then idk.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Stressful embarrassing cause we do it nice cause we do it THRICE not twice THRICE cause there is no communication.  Old blue prints with no revisions just wild! So you end up making the same mistakes yrs later cause no one gives a $HI T .

Ive worked at Algoma Steel for a long time now. Most jobs are quite comfortable in that the bosses don't squeeze every bit of energy out of their employees which is a good thing. The money is good and benefits when you're working are good...benefits for retirees are quite a different story. I've enjoyed my job in maintenance for many years. Its the kind of place where you can get dirty just standing there but there are shower facilities everywhere. The opportunity for advancement is always there. Ive heard horror stories about risks of cancer in different parts of the plant but I believe that this risk can be found at any large mill. There are always good and bad about any factory. To sum it up, Algoma Steel is a good place to work, but I don't necessarily like the northern Ontario area. If I had to do it all over again, I'd probably work  in a steel mill in southern Ontario.

Hired in the spring of 1981 and layed off in the fall of 1983. I was forced to leave Sault Ste. Marie so I could provide for my wife and family of 2 young children, age 2 and 3. I left a good job to join Algoma which I thought was going to be a long and prosperous career however, that ended in the fall of 1983 due to a recession. I was handed a notice of lay off after 1 year of service, and managed to stay employed for approximately 6 more months. As a result, I incurred financial hardship and was left wondering WHY I made the move to Algoma Steel.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Going bankrup again. Managed by a bunch of entitled kids stuck on playing on their phones. Too much waste and little knowledge in industry

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Kids managing from their phones. No clue. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Toxic,.place is going bankrupt again. Managers are raping the finances ,again. Safety is out the door. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Was busy doing the work of three ,due to incompetence of manager.

Typical day - too many meetings with no direction/outcomes

Continually learning how to negotiate with all levels of the organization to get something/anything done.

No trust whatsoever between workers/management or vendors- Finger pointing is very apparent.

Very hard to stay positive and back up management decisions on continual basis.

I enjoy working with my peers/colleagues knowing we are all in it together trying our very best to survive and make improvements every chance possible despite the negativity.

Algoma seems to be a decent place to work. It's a steel mill, its old, it's dirty, and it's hot. The place pays good for a reason (you will never find another job where you make so much and do so little). The downside to this company is the management, there is a distinct "wall" between management and workers on the floor. It is a very political environment with minimal (at best) accountability, for an integrated steel mill it sure doesn't act like one. Hopefully the new CEO will make some good changes.

It is a decent place to work. 
In SSM you won't make better money anywhere else working in industry. 
The bads are management, supervisors are hired off the street or promoted after working there for less than a year.  It's kind of scary having new hires leading people. 


An eye opening experience to the service industry from highschool student point of view. Whatever job required doing was done. Saw some interesting things and met interesting people. Management was quite professional and understanding as possible for such a large company. Fellow workers were eager to assist and remain lifelong friends to this day.

amazing, felt free for the first time

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Show up an hour early, get my gear ready, work, shower, go home

Do all the work while everyone else stands there. Redo everything anyone else does by off chance. Learned how to improvise. Management are yes men and blame there incompetence on guys on floor and smile in your face a moment later. Fixing things that are completely spent and clapped out and do it immediately and have it hold forever as it gets even worse somehow
