I would not recommend anyone to work here except if you want to seriously damage your mental health. Management treat residents poorly, always making false promises and have no good intentions towards them beside charging more for less help and less ameneties. Employees are treated equally poorly and overworked. Nusing staff is constantly short and residents are not taken care of properly. Head office is just awful, they’re so cheap they don’t wanna put any money towards fixing the home or simply just hiring more staff. 1 person does the job of 3. There’s absolutely no communicarion whatsoever between management and employees. And there’s absolutely no sense of appreciation for staff that work there day in and day out. Overall a terrible working experience. 

The only good thing about working here is how nice the residents are and how much they need help. And also the odd person (staff) you’ll meet that isn’t rude and has some common sense. It’s mentally, physically and emotionally draining. For all that taken into account, let’s not forget that it’s minimum wage!! Not worth the headache.

The management has been unorganized since the very beginning, people quitting/getting fired. We have been short on staff almost always since I’ve been working here, especially lately sometimes there is 2 people serving dinner if we’re lucky, when it’s supposed to be 4! Many people call in sick or no show because they are tired of this job. 

There are no raises if you’ve been here a long time, you don’t get no appraisal for being loyal to the company. The manager would give seniority and shifts that employees with seniority asked for to people that just got hired. Many of us are simply exhausted. Also, all departments I would consider to be underpaid, especially the PSWs. They hire pretty much anybody, and that might be a reason why some people are irresponsible and don’t show up or perform well at work. Although, if you have a good team things can go pretty smoothly.

Overall, I think it’d be best to skip this place. It’s not worth the emotional/mental and physical distress.

I do not recommend working here. There is a high turnover rate. Not unionized.
Unused sick days and holidays don't carry onto the next year. No overtime.

Staff is undervalued and underpaid for the work required. Staff may be assigned tasks that are not included in the job description.

Upper management is primarily focused on financial gains and often micromanages. They make assumptions that employees jobs are easy and often compares it to a hospital or personal care home setting. They take in Residents that should not be in a retirement residence due to the level of care required.

Staff using the computers for a period of time is frowned upon, even when you are inputting information or researching/planning an activity for the Residents.

Activity Aides are expected to run 30-45 min unique group programs at least 5-7 times in an 8-hour workday. Not enough time for one-on-one programming. Most times, especially on the weekends, there is one Activity Aide running programs for an entire building.

There is a high staff turnover rate, even managers constantly leave. They don’t show appreciation or consideration for availability or seniority. Either you fit a specific line or you’re put with at least 10 other people on a “casual” list hoping you get asked to work a shift.

Even with the management seeming to hire many people, we still struggle with being short. They will choose new hires over those who have been there longest.

There is constantly a mess, pure disorganization within this retirement home. They still have not managed to get things right. Also, if you do decide to work here, make sure you get a contract highlighting everything you’re entitled to and keep a copy of that, because they will go out of their way to cheap out on you to either not even pay you, or for any possible sick time you need.


You will be required to do things you weren’t trained to do wait for anyone in seniority that enjoys taking their time and judging you while you have more than 15 residents and they have 3

When interviewing I mentioned many times I was 100% in experienced. They put me with the hardest residents… two people ones, all wheelchair residents and somehow I was roped into bathing after crying how much I disliked that part. Not 1 accommodation was made, which says a lot about how their residents are unfortunately treated. So many deaths around Covid were apparently natural, but really they were protocols not followed.. it was sick. If you want burnout and to think and hurt for every resident … work here.

An average day at work includes assembling sandwiches, reheating prepared foods and serving the prepared food. As a seasoned cook, I learned next to nothing. The management is very hands on and almost overly involved in the day to day tasks to the point that employees feel micromanaged. The hardest part of the job was the constant finger pointing between employees and the management coming down on people based on these accusations. The most enjoyable part of the job was chatting with residents and just getting the chance to engage them and possibly bring a smile to their faces.

Management is absolutely horrible, they hire just about anyone and throw them into work without any real knowledge. Half their workers don't show up for work, therefore your doing doubles as you cannot leave until your replaced. Alot of agency workers get called in as they truly have no real staff, everybody is quitting as the pay is just horrible for the amount of work you do. Very poor on scheduling, you won't know your working some days as they just randomly throw you in. They do not care about their staff, they care about money. All they do is lie and gossip. It's like being in high-school again. Very sad. 

They expect you to have no work life balance, coming in to fill the shifts of the employees they keep firing over talking about union or asking for pay raises. And if you don’t pick up extra shifts they will fire you. They intentionally keep a skeleton staff, and are desperate to keep the place non unionized. Workplace culture is the expectation that you are there much before your shift starts and after your shift ends, and then shame you or look down on you if you take your legal break. No free food here like other retirement homes. 

The kitchen staff acted and think they're chefs when they're not. The mash potatos are not homemade and come in from another company. This is suppose to be a 5 star senior's place. The muffins are just Quaker Oats badder. Some servers get in your way of work, and the kitchen staff themselves are not professional at all.  I work at higher end place right now and I'd never come back to this place again.  The chef was two face, and wore pajama like pants while working.  If you're looking for a cooking job, look elsewhere. Menu was way too plain. Seniors complained about the food a lot.  I agree with them.

I was in the insurance industry for over 13 years and never once did I feel fulfilled or supported by upper management or my work environment. Working among seniors is not only rewarding but something everyone needs to try. As part of the management team, we get to see seniors move in nervously but end up very happy within a few weeks of living at our home. Are there challenges, yes but we work as a team to always make sure we acknowledge them and come up with action plans
