I was a Scaler with Abitibi Consolidated Scaling wood & keeping a accurate inventory. I did the Payroll & paid the men at the Camp by sending Data & Receiving Data through Radio Communication.
I was a Supervisor working for Abitibi Consolidated looking after Cutting & delivery of wood to two paper mills in Stephenville & Grand-Falls.
I was in charge of Maintenance & parts availability.
I was in charge of production & keeping cost under Budget.
I like Learning new things & facing new challenges every day.
Work place was great working in different Terrains making it a Challenge at times.
Meeting new people & seeing new Technology advance over the years in Forestry.

Worked with the employees at Abitibi to develop a composting operations as a waste management tool for their paper mill biosolids. The management team at the company was very good and had the long term interests of the company at heart. However, the decline of in the newspaper industry meant that Abitibi would also come under hard times. The hardest part of the consulting work was waiting for the Ministry of Energy to grant the composted biosolids to be a product with added value. Although promised to occur soon it did not come through until years when I was working for Walker Industries.

If one thing stands out about my time working here is that the longer I work the more trapped I felt. The money was good my pension was there and the benifits all kept me there.  I must say that the work environment was lacking for me.   I felt that I could not leave this "great" job. Anytime i asked for change i was told if you don't like it Quit. Imagine telling A highly trained, intelligent committed employee with more than 25 years service Quit!
Oh well we are all in the same boat now.

Was a fun place to work.  A knowledgeable collection of individuals that were instrumental at extending the life of the mill in Thunder Bay.  Unfortunately the head office diidnt appear to be interested in doing business in the province of Ontario.

Abitibi Consolidated was a great place to work at one time. Ten years ago when the economy was changing and the paper mill began downsizing, the moral was so poor it was a difficult place to work.

Well when they were open it was a decent place to work free lunches when you hit new records safety was good but they went under when lumber took a dive in 2007/2008

Spent the majority of my working career at this company.  Those were good years.
