A Typical Day at Work:
A typical day involved tutoring three to four students simultaneously. The sessions were focused on helping students with their homework or clarifying concepts they found challenging. The workload varied depending on the students' needs, but balancing time between them was difficult, as some students learned faster while others needed more support.
The hardest part was balancing the time between students, especially since some needed more help than others. The short, one-hour sessions often felt unproductive because there was barely enough time to cover multiple topics thoroughly. Additionally, the hourly pay structure didn't compensate for the effort required to manage and support multiple students effectively. The most rewarding part was seeing students improve and gain confidence in their abilities. It was fulfilling to know that my assistance was making a tangible difference in their academic progress, despite the challenges of the job.

Fast-paced environment with no breaks in between students. Shifts don't usually surpass 3 hours, so it's a great place to work for someone who is also in school. Manager is super sweet and always checks in with their employees, and tutors are friendly. However, pay is nowhere near enough. Hours are subject to change without adequate warning (i.e. 30 minutes to an hour before your shift) and amount of students per hour can exceed the policy of 4 per tutor. Answer keys are missing pages and manager assigns incorrect homework that the tutors have to fix. No room for career mobility, no full-time positions, and no benefits. You might have to work with disabled and behaviourally challenged students even if you are not qualified. Strongly discouraged to sit down even if you are bending over the whole time as the tables are not high enough to mark work without straining your back/neck. Extremely rewarding.

The manager had a policy that tutors could not prepare student materials in advance. Everything was prepared while the student came in (lesson worksheets and homework). However, this becomes an issue when you are tutoring 2 or more students at the same time. Sometimes one student requires further attention due to experiencing challenge in the worksheet. This was often the case and made it difficult to balance equal amount of time to both students. There are no lunch breaks or snack breaks. Tutors are expected to work 5 hours straight. By law in Ontario, you must have a break if you are working 5 or more hours. This has not been considered by the manager either.

Part-time job that doesn't exceed longer than 3-hour shifts so it's a great place to work if you are a university student. I learned a lot about different teaching strategies as every student requires different help. Manager is super sweet and always checks in with their employees, and tutors are also friendly.

During the elementary school year, it's standard for one tutor to be assigned four students of different grades and subject matter. It can get stressful if you get overstimulated or overwhelmed easily. There is also the possibility that you will have to work with children with disabilities and behavioural struggles, even if you are not qualified. Of course, it is greatly rewarding, too.

Academy is really nice to work with. You don't have to prepare material at home, they have all curriculums and material for the tutors from JK - Grade 12. You don't have to go out of your way to prepare homework or worksheets because they have every unit and concept for you to use. You get joy out of teaching students, especially when they bring their amazing tests back! The ratio of tutor to student is 1:4, it's not stressful with a small ratio like that. Time goes by super fast! I recommend the academy to any tutor, or if you're becoming a teacher, this is a great skill to put on your resume.

Pay was not high enough for industry standard, pay was distrubuted unfairly based on favouritism. Shady pay for training and breaks. No opportunity for advancement in pay. Owner would do sneaky things to new hires in terms of payment and hours. Hours are not steady enough even when promised certain amount. Micromanagement when we were in person from owner. Poor communication from owner about new classes and expectations etc. 

It’s great to work for a company that has a team so driven and commuted to what they do. Derick is a great person to work for. Although his priority is always the students, he takes care of his staff and works with their hours. I have worked for the company for about 4 years so far, despite having other work, simply out of loyalty and a love for what I do. If you love to teach it is certainly the right job for you. 

I have a perfect experience working with the Academy for Mathematics and English. There was a very positive environment for all the tutors and students—considerable support from the managers and beneficial resources for students and teachers.

Employees are consistently teaching multiple students for hours, usually with 15 minute breaks in between each hour. Employees are generally university students and are friendly. Managers are extremely courteous and make sure that the needs of their employees are met.

The management is very good. It is a highly organized workpalce. My co-workers are very supportive. It is a very rewarding experience to teach kids at this location and the good management of this workplace has created a joyful and a stress-free environment.
