I worked at Acden/Aves (formerly Acden-Helios), and while the pay and days off are decent, the work environment is mentally draining and discouraging.

Pros:

✅ Good starting pay – Competitive wages compared to similar jobs.
✅ Decent time off – Scheduling allows for a fair work-life balance.
✅ One great supervisor – The senior supervisor genuinely cares about employees, unlike most of management.

Cons:

⚠️ Unprofessional & Stressful Work Environment – Workplace drama, favoritism, and lack of professionalism make it difficult to stay motivated.
⚠️ Constant Management Changes – Leadership shifts every year, but hiring decisions are often based on personal connections rather than qualifications.
⚠️ No Pay Raises – The starting rate is decent, but wages remain stagnant unless you leave.
⚠️ Lack of Recognition & Unfair Promotions – A dedicated worker with nearly 10 years of experience, mastering every role, was never promoted, while others were advanced due to favoritism rather than merit.
⚠️ Micromanagement & Inconsistent Standards – Hardworking employees are overly monitored and pressured, while others who disregard company policies face no consequences.
⚠️ Favoritism & Lack of Accountability – Some employees who engage in inappropriate workplace behavior or mismanagement of company resources remain protected due to personal ties to leadership. Meanwhile, employees who voice concerns or challenge inefficiencies are often singled out.
⚠️ Workplace Issues Are Not Addressed – Repeated concerns about conduct and professionalism are often overlooked, creating an uncomfortable work environment for many.
⚠️ Leadership Suppresses Innovation & Efficiency – Employees who suggest better ways to improve workflow are often undermined or dismissed, as some supervisors view new ideas as a challenge rather than an opportunity.
⚠️ Feeling Constantly Watched & Restricted – Many employees, including myself, felt closely monitored at all times—whether through GPS tracking, unnecessary supervision, or a lack of autonomy. Even after completing tasks efficiently, we were often kept on-site without a clear reason, making it feel like management had excessive control over daily routines.
⚠️ Unpaid Overtime & No Acknowledgment – Many employees put in extra hours out of dedication to their work, yet this effort is neither compensated nor appreciated—it is simply expected.

Final Thoughts:

If you just need a paycheck and aren’t concerned with long-term career growth, this job may work for you. However, if you value a supportive, fair, and professional work environment, this is not the place. The culture prioritizes favoritism over hard work, disregards employee well-being, and overlooks concerns while punishing those who speak up.

More importantly, if you try to improve processes or introduce better ideas, expect to be dismissed or hindered—as leadership prefers to maintain the status quo rather than create a more efficient system.

Would I recommend this company? Only if you’re comfortable with workplace politics, inconsistent management, and minimal career progression. Otherwise, I’d look elsewhere.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The experience and the people you work alongside. This is not a hand-holding environment — it’s a place where motivated people can develop quickly and learn to operate independently.

You’ll find a wide range of professionals here — drone pilots, boat operators, labourers, biologists, and many others — all contributing to the same goal. Over time you see how new people coming in can learn quickly by working alongside experienced crews.

Anyone who has spent time in the field here knows the conditions can test you, but that’s also where the experience comes from. The culture encourages people to take ownership of their work, look out for each other, and take pride in doing the job safely and properly.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Like many fast-moving field environments, the work can demand independence and responsibility early on. That can feel challenging at first, but it also pushes people to grow quickly and build real confidence in their abilities.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
If you’ve worked here, you already know what kind of place it is. It rewards initiative, accountability, and people who are willing to step up.

The crews understand the difference between someone who just shows up and someone who shows up ready to work. There’s a strong sense of looking out for one another and getting the job done properly.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day involved coordinating with the crew, preparing equipment, and heading out to the field to support bird deterrent operations and monitoring work. Depending on the role, that could involve drone operations, boat work, field observations, or general support tasks.

The work requires attention to safety, communication with teammates, and adapting to changing conditions in the field. Some days are routine, while others require quick problem solving and teamwork to get the job done properly.

It’s the kind of environment where people learn to be reliable, work together, and take responsibility for the task at hand.

Working amongst your own crew is great. Everybody on the crew gets along and works well together, however there is a lot of highschool drama between the cross shifts and morale is quite low.
There is a lack of respect from upper management/owners. You'll only advance in the company if you're part of their clique and don't question what they tell you to do even if it goes against procedure/ethics.
Management complains that nobody is qualified to do the job but then will hire people with a lack of experience/education. They don't care who works for them, they just need a body to fill the positions so they can keep getting money.
They have also messed with the workers pay on multiple occasions and thought they could get away with it.. I don't imagine the company will be around much longer with the way they are handling their employees/contracts.

If you love to have a work life balance  based on  a 14x14 rotation this could be the job for you.  If you love  being micromanage to the point your just a yes man robot doing very stupid tasks due to the incompetence of management this is the job for you. Able to handle criticism & for upper management to not listen to decades of experience this could be for you!   The place is a yacht club worried about the pennies up front and not about the growth for the company.

A company name change doesn't change the overall poor operation of this company. Don't expect to advance or be respected. Just be a yes man.  They will expect you to do more then your job title, or what you were hired for.  If you speak up, you will be targeted. A very toxic environment to work based on senior management's handling, or none handling, of issues. All you have to he according to them is "A warm body to occupy the position". Also, expect to be yelled at. 

It is a red flag when most of the employees have been there less than two years, including leadership. 

Executive will promise a lot, and act on none of the promises. You will be a target if you bring up any problems, even if you propose a solution. They talk poorly of people who leave for any reason. They fire good staff with either no reason (hoping it goes un-noticed) or start making things up about them after they’re gone. They take away benefits as consequences for using them. 

They ARE good at dangling the carrot. Prepare an exit strategy. 

Look, this place isn’t the best, but it certainly isn’t the worst. Management is overloaded and while there could definitely be some major improvements, they’re doing the best they can. You get paid well, it’s a 7 on, 7 off shift, paid health benenfits and there’s overtime galore. Your shift makes or breaks how you feel here. Some management does their best to create a healthy shift dynamic and some treat like a popularity contest, but that’s no different than literally any other large workplace out there. I loved my time here, it was just time to move on. 

Fun coworkers, set schedule with paid flights and camp, RRSP match, decent benefits are the pros here. 

Everything else is questionable. Get what you can from it, and get out. You are treated as replaceable, and your opinions and ideas do not matter. Don’t be an idealist or think that scientific decision making is going to happen here.  They may bill you as a biologist, but they certainly don’t treat you like one. 

Management is incompetent, inflexible, and extremely disorganized. Don’t expect timely or well reasoned decision making. 

I feel a lot of these negative reviews really aren’t fair. Absolutely the company has downsides as all do but the coworkers are great and management could be much worse. The schedule is great and the pay is competitive. It is largely seasonal work so that is a downside but you know that going in. If you choose to apply to the company just know the reviews that are very negative don’t truly represent the job. 

Starting pay is competitive to start  and the work life balance is great with 7 on 7 off shifts. Camp life isn't so bad with all food and accommodations provided while working. Management can be disorganized at times but are trying to expand and do better. Really solid place to start your career especially if your goal is to work with wildlife.
