It was a pleasure to work with Aecon Industrial Western, in that I saw first hand the part that safe work practices, a high standard of professionalism, and integrity in management play in creating an empowering working environment. As an apprentice, I could not have found a better placement to introduce me to the world of industrial steamfitting/pipefitting; my superiors were both knowledgeable and patient with a high degree of emphasis on safety at all times, and kept an eye to ensuring that I gained the maximum exposure to a variety of different applications of the trade to benefit my learning experience, and refining the skills I brought to them from my formal education. The work environment was one where you truly felt you were a team player, with a high degree of respect for each and every worker on every level. I cannot emphasize enough how much of a difference it made to feel as though my efforts were not only appreciated, but seen as an integral role in accomplishing the collective tasks set before us. I would without hesitation highly recommend this employer to anyone seeking a great place of employment in the pipe trades industry. It was a hard company to finally leave, though the terms of my departure were lay offs.

I worked for 2 years as field technician in one of their prime contractor companies which come under aecon. In the beginning I was given the 1 and half months of training paid, after that I was expected to do the rest of the training free, if your decide to quit within the first 6 months you will need to return the money payed to you for training. Benefits do not come included in our contracts and work hours are not reasonable as they expect you to work 7 days a week, if you want a day off you need to contact other technicians to see if they can cover your days, if you cannot find anyone management will indirectly suggest firing as an option. In terms of equipment the software is very slow and that can cause issues when trying to receive technician calls. If you receive any complaint whatsoever prepare to pack your bags because you will not be given the opportunity to speak your side of the story. If you have any vehicle issues you’re on your own because management will not allow you the time to fix your vehicle they will however remove you from the schedule. I wasted 2 years of my life working for this company, I personally met a lot of other technicians that have come and gone throughout the years so if you are looking for a field technician job in telecommunications I highly recommend you look elsewhere!

Working day at AME typically consists of an unpredictable schedule. Depending on the circumstances you could work in the morning and also be asked to come in at night if short staffed. Most new employees are also asked to come in on the weekends.

Training is limited, lots of broken tools and equipment-especially related to asphalt core cutting. Injuries at work are common especially related to asphalt drilling. I had couple of close calls myself. This is because of poor training and lack of good equipment. 

they cover 50% of your phone bill if you were not provided a company phone. however if you do not submit you phone bill by a set time, they do not give you your money. i didn't get paid for using my personal phone because i did not submit my bill on time. i was 2 months late. i was new and didn't know about this policy, which is stupid as they should of still re-reimbursed me. it is the principle that counts here, i use my phone to get to sites and should have been compensated regardless.

All in all, management expects you to be available on short notice. they make you drive to job sites out of town sometimes on short notice. Great job if you are single and willing to risk your health and do without sleep. Not a good job if you have family.

A typical day would start with an all Supervisor/Contractor daily scheduling meeting. I would then have an informal meeting with my project foremen, discussing scheduled work, progress and safety issues. I would then attend the foreman/worker job task review for the upcoming day. I learned once again that you take nothing for granted, and that all people including Supervisors must fully understand the tasks and how vital schedules effect all aspects of the project. Upper Management was excellent to work with as they left you to manage your aspect of the project yourself. Being a Union job co-workers were normally good but I found myself constantly having to bring up work productivity, smoke breaks and extended coffee breaks. The most enjoyable part of all projects I've supervised is the ability to plan  schedule and implement projects. I enjoy being able to be out in the field observing productivity to be able to plan the next day/weeks upcoming tasks. For myself being too busy was by far better than having little to do.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Great group of guys minus the horrible techs who were treated like gods gift to fibre. Management team was great until the BTS mentality came aboard,  took over and made it a very toxic working environment.  Very unfortunate there’s a lot of great guys there that deserve to be treated better. The splicing team is ran on empty promises and lies. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Having the management team drop the higher ups names on you time and time again to instil fear to get you to work faster in unsafe and very tight timelines due to bad coordination on the managers behalf. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very toxic and built on lies, nothing is ever followed through with, safety is not at a fore front like they claim it to be. Not to mention the struggle for tooling and good working equipment

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Work till you drop and do it again because it’s expected and the higher up directors and vps are watching.

The job was good, the employees were good people, and management was open minded, and respected the thought's and ideas of others.
 I became a Journeyman Fitter while working with this company. I expanded my welding skills, and fitting skills. I learned that I also love training/teaching others how to read blueprints, and expand their knowledge of the trade. I also learned how the fabrication side of things worked, as in getting drawing, and changes made.
 All guys working there were willing to show/answer any questions co-workers had. Always there to help others, and each other.
 the hardest part of the job was having to leave it. I had family problems at the time and left the province for a new start, which was a decision I regret because she never changed and my family split.
 I looked forward to going to work because the company treated you like you were a somebody, and you are important to the company. I was treated like I was part of a family. the setting/environment was a family setting, and a safe environment.

I had an amazing boss made work fun and enjoyable to be at most of the time. probably the only reason I stayed as long as I did. 
Because of my work ethic and drive to learn & grow was able to move up the ladder.

I started as a water truck driver but was always pushing to learn more about general operations, management & Equipment operation. as a result, I was trained on various equipment & started becoming a part of daily planning and organization.

 I was also responsible for the safety of my crew by establishing the construction work zone, setting HWY signage & maintaining signage logs, placing barricades, barrels, delineation & road or lane closures. 

I learned time management, organization, construction methods, communication Skills. Both the hardest part and most enjoyable part of the job was working away from home. I have learned to love working for 14+ days straight & getting 5 to 7 days off it allows for you to enjoy your days off and still get everything else done you need to get done in life.

I'm on a contract position with Aecon and Aecon is an amazing company to work for...great work/life/family balance. As well, excellent wage, benefits and opportunity. My day is a 10hr day right on the construction site.  I've learned to understand the whole job...field work and office work.  It's very hands on with lots to learn.  Management here on site and at the head office have been a wonderful support in all areas.  The hardest part of my job is having to say good bye to some really great people...both trade world and Aecon as the project winds down and is getting ready to close.  In saying that, I am sure for many of us, our paths will cross again in the construction/industrial world.  I enjoy arriving every day and my day is upbeat, busy and enjoyable. As much as I wish this job would last forever, unfortunately the contract and job itself is coming to an end.  I hope to continue working for Aecon Industrial, Energy Division in the future as new contracts come along.

  When they ask you to do a job they expect you to do it. They leave you to it and let you do the job , that’s what I liked about it. I was a truck driver and the trucks were well looked after.

   The worst part was coming in sometimes and waiting for work and hoping weren’t going to get sent home because there wasn’t any work. It didn’t happen very often. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
   It was good overall , they’re were a lot of different races but everyone got along. There was the odd one that didn’t like others but you get that everywhere. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
    There were some hard days , most were easy and all went well. I never had any trouble getting along with anyone. It was like anywhere, if you had a good truck and a good job then it was a good day.
