As a teacher with the Algoma District School Board for 31 years, I have continually learned the many skills necessary to collaborate with others, including teachers, educational assistants, administration and parents.  The Algoma District School Board allows for on-going professional development which enables a person to grow as an individual.  

There is no typical day in the education profession.  One must be flexible, even when the best plans are made.  The day doesn't begin or end at the workplace.  Many hours of planning are involved outside school hours.  I learned throughout the years to manage my time wisely throughout the day in order to make time for myself and family.

Teaching is a rewarding job for many reasons, but mostly because you get to see the tremendous development of children throughout the year that they are in your care.  I loved seeing the smile on their faces when they've realized that they could finally do something that was difficult for them in the past.

The most difficult part of education is that you feel you can't meet everyone's needs the way you want.  Students come with so many mental health issues, individual needs and diagnosis, and sufficient support is lacking.  But you do your best and keep moving forward.

When I was teaching in Hornepayne, I appreciated the following:  smaller class sizes, because of these smaller classes, being able to get to know my students well, being able to develop the course content, according to Ministry guidelines, for each of my classes rather than having no option to do so, often being able to change study material for my classes to keep these courses more interesting for myself rather than covering the same material over and over year by year as is sometimes the case elsewhere, working for an administration that was friendly and respectful to me and promoted a sense of harmony among employees, being very well paid for my work. Though my teaching in Hornepayne was a long time ago, it was such a good experience that I would be pleased to work part time for the high school if I did not now live so far away.

Auto scrubbing and stripping and waxing rooms
Good pay and benefits if you’re full time custodian!

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
When caretakers leave you notes in the black book

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Not a team environment 
Some people are nice and some are not nice to you

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Cleaning classrooms, sweeping floors, mop floors, take marks off, empty garbage cans, vacuuming carpets.

I really enjoyed working for ADSB in the capacity of an educational assistant. Although there were many challenging situations when working with children, there were many rewarding times as well. I learned a lot from the students I worked with. The teachers and support staff are always helpful. I most definitely believe my experience at ADSB was positive and a fulfilling personal and professional growth. 

Basically work between the hours of 8:30 - 3:30. No breaks, 30 minute lunch break ( unpaid) Work 5 days/week ,,, 6 hours/day for peanuts

Very vague job description -- Assist academically, physically challenged students with school activities, including but not limiited to feeding, toiletting, academic assistance.  Basically, do whatever the teacher or administrator tells you to do and get no credit for it.

Working with students is great and many of the teachers (3X the pay) are amazing colleagues. There is not enough staff development pertaining to Educational Assistants and the pay grid stops after 1 yr. A 30 year employee makes the same as a 1 yr employee. We are 10 month employees and paid per/hour, , only work 30 hours per week and are laid off in the summer, Chritmas, and March Break. 

During a typical day I worked with children with a variety of special needs.  Usually with a team of co-workers, always under a qualified teacher. Both the hardest and the most enjoyable part of my job was the children and leaving my work at school, not taking it home with me, I learned a lot from the children, I often wonder how taught whom more.

The ADSB is fun and supportive to work for as an Occasional Teacher, however, as student enrollment is declining right now there is very little opportunity to move into a full-time teaching role.

Great employer! Great place to work at. It has been a pleasure to work as a teacher and department head for this Board of Education. I learned new things everyday with my students and my colleagues. Engaged in lifelong learning opportunities. Very friendly co-workers. Very cooperative administration.

it’s one of the most amazing places to work at the staff is wonderful I really love working with them..
The lunch break is fair enough . The policy of health and safety is very good .
