Allstate Insurance

Leadership is variable with some micro managing and not supportive to your success (even negative at times) and/or lacking capabilities of being a true leader;  but with others highly skilled in trusting and developing their teams so individual experiences will vary. Always a good idea to really interview your prospective leader prior to accepting a job offer as your experience at Allstate could vary greatly because of it. 

The parent company's control over Canadian operations is strong and growing limiting its autonomy and creating a new level of bureaucracy  that depletes efficiencies.  Work load is excessive with days typically full with back to back meetings and completing your job responsibilities at night and/or weekends. There has been a lot of changes in the company which in general is a good thing although perhaps too much at once.  These changes should settle down in a couple of years creating a more stable environment and perhaps will play into a better work life balance than what currently exists. The majority of people have been there for many years which can limit acceptance of new ideas requiring more selling than usual and provide more challenges when managing such people but still possible to change minds and perspectives.

The pay is somewhat competitive but generally one could find higher pay for similar positions outside of the insurance world; however merit increases do align better with inflation than other companies in my opinion and salary bands are re-assessed regularly which is good for you and if you are managing people, goes a long way to empower your ability to retain them. Medical benefits are very good however the Defined Contribution Plan really requires a long term commitment, no matching in the first  year or two and then only at 60% after that however; if you stay in the program for a long time you can be matched at greater than 100% eventually. I would advised you ask about this prior to accepting a position at Allstate Canada to ensure you are aware of what you are getting into.  Vacation time accumulates very slowly and I would say typical of an American owned company and will not be a surprise to those who have worked for such companies. You can however negotiate a fair vacation prior to employment especially if coming from another company that had more favourable vacation time.  In short, If you plan to be at this company for a long time (10 years or more) it may be the right fit for you.  

Easy to build partnerships and receive support from peers. It is generally a collaborative environment, although chaotic at times. It can be difficult to move things forwards and this is where you will need to ensure you have a good supportive leader. The company support infrastructure such as, I.T. and HR departments are highly responsive and supportive and were a pleasure to work with.  Overall Allstate is a collaborative environment particularly if matched with the right leadership and more geared towards those who plan to stay in one company for a long time.   

Been with the company for half a year and so far I've found it to be a rewarding experience but the job isn't for everyone. It's very customer oriented, you talk to people for 3 -120+ mins you have to be calm, collective and use the resources to do your job right and it can be stressful. 

But! You get what you put out!

 I'll try to break it down.

Pros:
- very fair wage which grows as you progress in your role
- co-workers who get what it's like to be stressed and nervous. I usually talk to my co-workers a few times a day in different departments and I usually have a laugh with them. It's good to know they were in my shoes you don't feel alone with the stress.
- good management, they understand you'll make mistakes and they'll help you through it. 
- general relaxed work environment: my day is pretty basic and easy, I start my computer, check my emails sip my coffee respond to what I can before I open my phone. From there the time flys.
- theres a manual for everything, instructions are all over the place and 90% of the time it's easier than you think!

Cons:
- can be stressful. You're doing a lot at once and can be hard to manage. Organization is key. 

- you need your OTL license if you don't get it then it may cost you your job. But once you get it that's it. 

- you can deal with very hostile clients and sometimes you simply can't do anything about it. (remember, most of the time you actually have the law on your side)

- it can be rough starting out if you're not used to insurance but you can do it!

- sedentary lifestyle can be difficult, be sure to have an outsource like the gym. 

Overall, I love my job. I have a lot to learn and I lot to improve on and my team and management understand and are patient with this, they encourage improvement but remember what it was like starting out.  

A typical day at Allstate as an Adjuster will be attempting to keep up with voicemails and emails (which is usually not possible). 

You're informed you have about 10-15 minutes per claim file, even on complex matters. There is never enough time in the day not to start falling behind, unless you work overtime that is unpaid.

There are many learning opportunities, but you'll eventually be told that any options for pay increase are behind developmental opportunities. They describe it as 'Lateral Promotion'. More responsibility, same pay (or less in some cases).

Management do their best to keep things cool, but under the surface you can tell they're nearly as stressed as you are. Managers never have time for support or questions, even if its a decision that you're not authorized to make. I would often not hear back from my supervisor for 2-3 days on issues that were preventing cases from moving forward. As a result of this I would get timeline complaints that I could do nothing about, and these complaints would be counted against me for pay increases.

The hardest part of the job is trying to keep yourself happy. I've watched so many other adjusters suddenly just quit and disappear, or take stress leave for months and then leave. It seems like no one lasts forever, or if they do they're already senior in the company and likely have a better contract.

The most enjoyable part of the job would be when you can genuinely make a difference for someone who puts up with the contact timelines and still treats you with respect, even if they haven't necessarily had the best experience. 



I work in auto claims. Management is respectful. We have regular surveys about management, so this forces managers to be respect and professional at all times. 

The workload is heavy, we are always understaffed. It takes them months to replace people, by time they do, more people leave. A lot of ppl work overtime. 

They are also micromanaging more. We have boards that show everyones stats on a weekly basis.

 Also every month, they want us to identify “goals” and self assess our performance. This affects our bonus. if you assist a coworker, they need to formally send you an email or shout out card for it to count. It affects your bonus. It’s overkill. It feels like you have to beg for credit from your own colleagues. 

They also make employees engage in projects. For example, we are expected to identify an issue then try to fix it. This involves team meetings and filling our forms. It’s a waste of time and often leads nowhere. If we complain on the surveys about the workload or system issues, we are forced to meet as a team and think of ways to resolve or improve this.

 The company is going downhill. Allstate forgets people have families and lives outside of the office. We work to pay bills. We should be rated based on our performance for the job we were hired to do. Simple. All this additional “developmental” nonsense takes time away from our actual work. It’s discouraging, a waste of time, and killing employee morale. They just make you feel like a failure with their unrealistic expectations and standards.   

When taking into account the high stress, constant overtime, while living in Toronto which has a high cost of living, the salary isn’t enough!! 


I've had the privilege of being a part of the Allstate Insurance team for the past three years, and I must say that it has been a largely positive and rewarding experience.

Pros:

After just over 2 years working at Allstate as a Customer Care Agent, I left a completely different workplace than what I had entered. New management was hired to look after the service staff and it’s an absolute mess. Zero communication regarding changes or they would mention a change and leave you clueless as to how it’ll roll out. I heard “stay tuned”, “more to come on that”, “things will get better” so many times I wanted to scream. I escalated concerns regarding my passive aggressive manager with HR, CEO and VP with zero resolution. HR twists your complaints to turn it around on you. This company doesn’t care about its employees. A lot of people are quitting because it’s gone downhill. They even LOST the Kincentric Best Employer Award this year and are still advertising it in their job postings… absolute zoo of a company. You don’t advance unless you drink the koolaid. 

I come from a background of managing wireless sales stores, and this is one of the most frustrating sales experiences I've ever had. I came into this business without any knowledge, and if I did, I would have worked for a brokerage. My agency staff and owner are great, but the company is joke. The owner has two officers, so our minimum requirements are double. We scramble to meet the minimum auto requirements because where we are in CA is very expensive and the people who live here are typically not in Allstate's appetite.  There are state laws that also prevent us from adding discounts that other states have, making our auto policies non-competitive.  I make over 100 calls a day, lucky if even 1 picks up for an auto quote, and th they usually just hang up. Oh, and if you want to write business policies, good luck pal. We were rejected by underwriting for a photography studio because they also record. Their fear of getting sued keeps underwriting guidelines are too strict. I have never felt this way in sales my whole sales career. I worked at a car dealership for 2 weeks and was able to get 2 cars without knowing anyth, and I was also top salesman in my locations in my phone stores, hence why I was manager.

Allstate Canada is a very good company to work for.  Their head office is located in Markham, Ontario but there are a number of bricks and mortar sales branches across Canada and other administrative offices in major Canadian cities.
A typical day at work usually starts a little earlier in the morning than most companies: most people are in the office by 9 am.  The pace is quick and the work is challenging.  Advancement is possible but you have to drive this.
The culture was old-fashioned but it's shifting to be more modern.  Some departments are very supportive of working from home while other departments are still getting used to having remote workers.  
The most enjoyable part of the job is the people.  Allstate Canada has an excellent culture where people are truly respectable and any bad behaviour is not tolerated for long.  
The hardest part of the job is trying to get work done in a process-heavy company that still has some outdated technology.  They are updating their technology and trying to go paperless so things are improving.

Worked in IT for a long time in various roles. In the past three or four years, new senior leadership began who I feel do not value the employees as people. In my opinion, the focus has become to satisfy under resourced productivity commitments made by over ambitious management with little input or even against recommendations made by senior staff. I think Management is trying to implement a high paced sales management style into an IT department. Director level Management have emphasized in staff meetings that staff are coddled babies and how they should be happy they have jobs. As well,  when productivity requests from the Business increased, Senior Leadership's response was to hire new Directors and Managers - not staff ( staff are leaving in droves btw). The new management "style" was in stark contrast to former management and this "change" is causing quite a lot of stress for many who work there. I believe it to be a toxic work environment that for the wrong person could definitely impacting one's health.

Taking calls from clients for updates to their policies - such as changes requiring new Liability cards, issuing claims experience letters or Confirmation of Insurance letters. Doing Renewal calls and reviewing their coverage's with them to ensure they have the correct coverage available. I have learned a lot about Property policies - most of my career dealt with Auto but now I know what is involved in property and how the Sales Office is handled. My manager and co-workers are always there to help, it is a great team and I enjoy going in to work. I usually get in early and always leave later than I should - this is mostly due to the hours. I like to make sure the days works is complete and if not, than I will go in early to complete before the phones start ringing. The hardest part about the job is not having the time to make the renewal calls I want to get done this is because it is an extremely busy office and the phones don't stop but I enjoy dealing with the customers and we are opened on Saturdays which tends to be very quiet so I can get Renewal calls done then.
