Alta Steel

Alta Steel is a wonderful place to learn about the production of steel products made from scrap steel. I have learned about the whole production, starting from the scrap delivery right to the finished product that is sold to the customer. 
My current day at work varies. From the daily tasks, right to a piece of equipment that will break down. The machinery will vary in size from a shoe box to an 85 ton overhead crane. 
The job is very noisy and dusty, but is a fun challenge every day.
I have learned many mechanical duties. Ranging from the precision needed from the rolling machines, to large equipment needed for melting.
The co-workers are great! Lol! Sometimes its hard to talk with our face masks that need to be worn for breathing. Hand signals are an asset.
The most difficult part of the job is not knowing when the machinery will break down. To help solve these difficulties, my team and I set up work boxes will all the necessary tools, fittings, and lockouts to go with it. These work boxes save much time on preparation before the job begins.
The most enjoyable part of the job is knowing that a difference is being made. The equipment is not breaking down lubrication problems as it did 3 years ago. And the programs that we made up are still being used today. We were also given the compliment 'You and your team are miles ahead of anyone else in Arium Steel."

Attend toolbox meeting where safety is reveiwed and receive work orders. Reveiw previous shift report to check plant status. Respond to calls from operations. Troubleshoot plant operations problems .Have learned a lot about overhead cranes and hydraulics and have spent five years learning the AVANTIS computer maintenance system. Management has been in flux and learning to operate under the new computerised system so there has been a lot of stress and many have quit been fired or retired, Front line supervision has been overall fairly good. Most of the employee's are very good with a few personality conflicts, about the same as anywhere. The hardest part of the job for me is probably the heat. The most enjoyable part of the job has been working with and getting to know some of the people.

Working with Alta Steel i learned to manage my daily time efficiently. the days were busy and consisted of way too much work for one person in my position (I was covering a position that usually has 2 employees after only working there 2 months and not being signed off). 

I spent my day loading and off loading trucks with my machine. I loved the job and the fast pace of it. my co-workers were excellent. 

The hardest part would have to be the pressure put on top of me at such an early stage in the job by management before I was even fully trained. This ultimately lead to me seeking better new employment with a more relaxed atmosphere.

Long hours with backwards management.  Great training in the front office, but very poor and insufficient training when you get in the plant.  A very big disconnect between what is actually happening and what Management believes in happening.  Hostile relationship between Union and Management.  Preach safety but Management not willing to live it.  Better, safer and more work/life balanced jobs out there.  Beware of this place!  Being a Union worker is the best place to be, you are actually supported!!!

Management spends too much time and effort on reducing their liability than improving equipment or work procedures. Also very restrictive on implementing changes or allowing employees the chance to use all their skills.

typical day starts at 6:30 am
learned how to deal with semi drivers in the shipping and receiving end of things.
Responsible for ordering railcars and semis on a day to day basis.
Coworkers good to work with.
The hardest part of the job was the micromanaging of our new supervisor

Worst management ever worked for.  All pretend nice as there stocking daggers in your back.  They pay what they want to pay and always less than what supposed to make.  Save your self lots of grief avoid this company with all cost

Hard labourous type work, enjoyed the people i worked with, Shift work was hard to get used to. Came under new management who wasnt very good.

Can’t say much very very toxic environment .... thrown to the wolves on a daily basis .. horrible staff horrible management ..... very disrespectful upper management that don’t know what there doing

This was a contract job working from school.
Can't properly speak to culture or client.
I would work for them again in the future based on the minimal interactions that were made.
