the ASP serves individuals and families affected by dementia. It is a fantastic resource and provides everything from volunteer opportunities, to education, linking to other community services and supports, supportive counselling and has a fantastic set of Day Program for those with dementia of various levels.

A typical day is atypical. Employees need to be open, creative and flexible to meet the ever-changing needs of the clients served.

I learned a great deal about working with people with various types of dementia, their families, the support that they need and the advocacy they deserve.

The employees and management team work together to provide the best resources for the population served.

The hardest part of the job is seeing someone deteriorate into dementia; loosing their personality and who they are as a person.

The best part of the job is getting to be creative and seeing snapshots of these individuals that have dementia, experiencing who they are and learning about their history.

Working with members and running programs is very enjoyable, but you are responsible for many tasks such as cooking, cleaning, serving, personal care, running programs, creating programs, managing a caseload, and contacting caregivers. Very difficult to keep on top of your tasks because you are not given enough time to complete them. Shifts are unpredictable 7-3, 8-4, 8:30-4:30, 10:30-6:30 so it's very hard to plan your evenings. Unfortunately, this job is more like a transition until you find something better (as the compensation is very low). Staff turn out as well is very high. 

My biggest issue is with the staff, they make you feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. I am constantly made to feel like I do not belong and am constantly being criticized (like a high school clique). Supervisors barely listen to new employees and prefer to take the word of senior staff. When I complained and asked for a solution I was told to essentially deal with it on my own.

This place has been a great place to work at, some staff are great, provide lots of training and always looking for ways to improve service, but frontline staff have to work different shifts every day that range for start of 7 AM to 10:30 PM ending at 3 AM to 6:30 PM or later which is hard when having a family, management is a hit or a miss you have some great ones who are accommodating and care for their team, but some are disorganized and only care for the money.  Is a demanding job due to care need of clients, different roles (Feeding, medication, personal care, client activity's, etc.), and tasks (Keeping forms up to date, Ordering Client Meals, etc.) you are required to do with little time to complete.

This job has been great for individuals looking to get into the field and gain experience.

Working at the Alzheimer Society of Peel is equivalent to working for the devil. Work/life balance is non existent. They make you work after hours to complete work. Management is a joke. They are more interested in their jobs, and sucking up to Senior Management to get a promotion and shout outs. Workplace culture is literally a school yard. There is so much bullying that happens in the work place, and management is constantly turning a blind eye. The hardest part of the job is actually being there for the people you're looking after. It's hard to put all your heart into a job, when management and the company continue to micro-manage you. They do not even pay you enough money. You're expected to do your role, plus other employees roles (because there are people who cannot even do their job) and then they literally pay you in lieu days and like pennies. STAY AWAY.

Great idea for supports but they definitely need to hire proper qualified experienced people with the proper education and academic criteria. A lot of gossiping from staff creating unsafe work spaces and making new staff feel uncomfortable due to their higher educational background. Lots of admin support working as “counsellors” with no qualified registration from a designated professional college. Yes, you may be working your way up into the company but going to university and paying to be a professional should hold some accountability versus a self proclaimed “counsellor/admin” working for  “17” years and possibly withou even a high school diploma. Sketchy organization.

The culture is good but the turn over in employees raises a red flag. I find there is alot of favouritism. The company boasts this we are all like family and make you feel safe/inclusive environment which is great but it is not a safe place to speak up. It doesnt change the fact that workers are underpaid, overworked, short staffed and not enough on the job training. The company also need to hire Managers and Coordinators that show more professionalism and guide the teams in the same manner. There is not enough support for the team and clients also do not have enough stimulation. There is also so much paperwork, planning etc. Also 1 hour unpaid break. The day programs also needs a upgraded better for clients. It is in bad shape. Also way to much gossip and politics.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Working with the Clients and their families. Benefits were adequate sick time was closely monitored. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Senior management was not supportive of the front line staff and had favorites . 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very high demand and favoritism by some senior management. Uncomfortable for a visible minority .

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Working front line with Clients and their families . Providing programming and information to people with Dementia.

At ASP, the management focuses on improving employees’ performance with regular educational opportunities and an environment where you can learn from one another. They may not have the best reputation in regards to compensation, which they are promising to work on.  Work load can be a bit high at times but it is enjoyable and you work alongside some very good talents. 

I facilitated programs for the clients that came to the program.  I wrote and ran the programs that I wrote for the clients.  I helped in all area in the organization.  I did gardening, pet therapy, singing and crafts.  I also worked with volunteers and new staff.

It is good place to work to gain knowledge and experience. A lot of trainings and both Management and Educators are super nice and helpful. In my opinion every nurse should have opportunity to work there - what I'm learning there I will take with me and use it in future.
