Being expected to work above your pay grade and level of experience

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Always pushing to get a job done faster and better to a fault. It seems that each crew has a different experience.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Wiring housing units with another apprentice was the norm. Training new apprentices was also common. The chance that they would last through their first week was unfortunately very low and this caused a severe lack of manpower which is the reason why i had so much responsibility as a first year apprentice.

I spent my entire apprenticeship at Amelco. I never needed to look anywhere else because they taught me everything  I needed to learn from residential experience to commercial. Management was approachable and provided any specialty tools needed to get the job done. I think the biggest things for working in electrical are to have a good group of guys you can get along with and work with, and a work environment that you don’t feel like you’re dragging yourself to every day. Amelco is a great example of both of those things, if I didn’t leave the province I’d still be working there.

They wont train you. They wont pay overtime. They will expect an apprentice to run jobs and train other apprentices. Journeymen are expected to have foremen responsibility and foremen have project manager responsibility. We had maybe 7 apprentices to one journeymen. They do not provide any tools and expect apprentices to have their own specialized tools that they rightfully cant afford. They also expect you to buy your own safety equipment and will not brief you on any job specific health hazards. I worked for the commercial side and I am pretty sure they went out of business.

I didnt enjoy it.  Felt like i could never satisfy the higher ups journeymen are not the most pleasant to be around.  They just show you how to do something without knowing the how.  Which is a little mind boggling Would not recommend if you plan to go far in your electrical career.   They just will use you to complete projects and not care about your growth.  It was so bad I decided to go to another trade 

good people to work for everyone gets along well, also this company will hire mass amounts of bodies then lay them off when the job is complete i find it sometime frustrating that they say they have no work at times then all of a sudden they hire a bunch of people and then lay them all off after a month i met a lot of good electricians that would have made this company better but instead they got canned

Management say what they need to in order to get what they want.
Give false info or half truths to influence your decision in their favor.

Make you work long time before break, longer than period of time most companies work to lunch break just for a coffee break.

Let employees go with NO warning.

things were run professionally and well organized

On my site my foreman was very laid back and trusting, he gave tasks that were challenging which allowed me to learn a lot more on my own. We were never forced to work overtime however it was always there.Everyone was willing to stay put in extra time and drop what they were doing to help you when needed.

Has older 44 hr work week. Not flexible. Some supervisors have odd thinking such as working 6 hrs before lunch. Mislead lie to employees about amount of future work. Can be laid off with no notice citing any excuse like short of work even after stating they have lots of upcoming work.

The workplace is full of good workers. But the company is painfully cheap on tools and materials. Be prepared to only use your own tools. And never have a consistent supply of the material that you need
They are also try to have as many apprentices as possible. Very cheap company
