I had never worked in manufacturing before and wow, not an easy transition when you are used to working with white collar professionals in an office environment. I did not really enjoy my time here at all; the workload was unrealistic, significant shortages in the HR department contributed to this, processes that were in place provided ZERO opportunity to be flexible, to recommend ideas or implement new suggestions.  If you did make suggestions you were denied.  This may be disheartening to those who are not afraid of change and who are eager to make a difference- I felt unheard and not valued.  You are basically just there to do insignificant and meaningless HR tasks, not to necessarily think. I did not enjoy being treated like a production worker either- I worked far too hard to grow my HR practice to be a punching a time clock at 7:30 am like the production associates were.  Money was on the lower end of the scale but in fairness I suppose it was directly in line with the surface tasks and workload that you were responsible for.  The work was very fast paced due to the lack of staff in the department, no privacy in the HR office, open concept and small, disorganized and cluttered. That alone gave me constant anxiety.  The endless noise from the plant just outside of the HR office combined with ongoing interruption from fellow HR staff and production associates made it extremely difficult to focus and get work done. I spent a great deal of time working from home every night where it was quiet so I could get caught up. This of course impacted my work/life balance and did not help with my level of job satisfaction at all. 
It was great to try something  new but in the end it was absolutely not the environment, not the industry and not the company for me!  


Working at Andersen Windows and Doors I learned many different aspects of what it's like to work in a real factory setting alongside with about 300 other coworkers. I'd say I picked up a lot of skills in the short time I was there and I learned a lot about who I was as a worker in the process. A typical day at work would be about a 8-10 hour shift depending on what part of the factory you work in and how busy the demand is for windows, It was often a busy environment to surround yourself in. A very well organized facility it showed me the truly cared about the safety and well-being of their workers, you will feel like apart of a bigger family if you work for Andersen. All the workers who I worked alongside were very friendly and polite and hardworking when it mattered most. The hardest part of the job was the working temperature in the factory on an average summer day it would creep up to around 40 c and would stay there almost all day. A great perk of the job if it gets hot enough is Andersen would let its workers go on a 15 or 20 minute break if it got too hot. The most enjoyable part of the job by far was really just who I worked with and the part of the factory I was in. The work wasn't overbearing or complicated, it's just getting used to working in a factory that takes some getting used to. Overall I would say I enjoyed working at Andersen and they are a fantastic employer to work for.

Working at Andersen's was a fairly physically demanding and fast paced job. Numbers had to be met each day and you would be working at a pace in order to keep up to whatever machine you might have been dealing with. I was fine with that, as I am naturally a fast paced hard worker. I learned a lot of leadership skills over the 5 years I was there. I was not the lead-hand, but trained a lot of individuals on a regular basis; department transfers were common and I was pretty much the only person who could perform each job in the department. In a department of 8-10 people, I did not mind the role of training individuals for a couple reasons; 1) I preferred that the people around me were properly trained and that they were familiarized with the job to the point that they were comfortable and 2) I found that a majority of fellow workers lacked the social and leadership skills needed to properly function as a team. So it made for a lot of busy days, but usually resulted in a high output of quality product. The most enjoyable part of the job was seeing the finished product after all the hard work. They were nice high-end quality parts and usually made for high-end homes.

Right ideas at times but no follow through with what matters. They need to dismiss an old time culture to uphold the direction of the company. employees comply with mistreatment. Middle management and leads have no accountability. Zero tolerance doesn’t exist. Health and Safety representation is laughable
Good pay, benefits, retirement and profit share. They can have it. 

only work here if you are trying to seek another job in the meantime. No respect for people as individuals.
Lies are fed to employees to keep them from quitting. Very non Canadian way of thinking. Rips off customers and employees have to lie about it and take all the stress.

We begin with a small meeting about what to do during the shift, and I learned to work in group with from different cultures. The breaks are enough long to rest a little beat and eat.

Andersen is a manufacturing plant with a strong safety culture. They focus on lean practices and 5S. Very clean and ergonomic workplace. You get shuffled around from dep’t to dep’t sometimes, but the people are great to work with.

Potentially could be a decent place to work. 

Unfortunately, the HR and management team clearly have no idea about business operations. Until this can be resolved I’d recommend working elsewhere for an employer who recognizes your worth. 

Andersen is a great company, fair pay, good benefits. Employee appreciation is number one.  Excellent shifts- top notch work/life balance I would recommend to anyone that shows up daily and puts forth an honest effort.
