When I started at Andrew Peller Limited, I was hired by a great guy who was understanding of the fact I am also in school part-time.

I was hired for a part-time job and it was clear to my employer that I had other matters of importance. This was fine for months. Seven months after I'd gotten the job, my direct supervisor was forced to retire. I say forced because he did not want to - they forced him out. I then stuck with this job for another three months under a new boss who managed two locations - in other words, she worked part-time at each store. This meant that our store had four part-timers plus a part-time manager. One part-timer left for a better job opportunity toward the end of the first month. My new boss didn't even put up a hiring sign for applicants until my coworker had finished working her two weeks. Naturally, the our team was spread pretty thin.

Given that I was in school part-time - a fact I explained to my boss when she first took over the location, and which she expressed no issue with - the overabundance of hours grew to be an issue. I regularly worked 24-32 hours, which ranged anywhere from 5 to even 6 days a week due to some of the shifts being less than 8 hours. When I was first hired, it was on the terms that I would not be needed to work any more than 24 hours, a fact that was also explained to my new manager. Nevertheless, what was meant to be a maximum became the minimum. Furthermore, while working only 3 shifts a week at 8 hours each is quite manageable, working 6 days a week for 4 hours each is extremely stifling on life outside the workplace.

I stayed with the job, expecting the situation surely would improve once we got a replacement - after all, my boss assured all of us that this would be the case. We didn't get a replacement until a full month later, and even after three weeks of training, the new hire was having no effect whatsoever on hours. Furthermore, despite having never once requested time off, never having missed a shift, and never even so much as trading a shift with anyone else, my boss began to give me a hard time about requesting a bit of time off - not vacation time, but simply days that I had exams to write. I've since resigned from Andrew Peller Limited, unfortunately, as it was because of the poor personal and management skills of my boss that I lacked the time to complete my schooling - I'm continuing the same course in September, so no lasting harm save for my time, if you don't consider that lasting harm. Three days after leaving the job I've heard from my coworkers that my manager has been slandering me after my departure, claiming I sat around and read magazines every day (I've never even touched a magazine in my entire life, and I don't bring novels to work; it's impossible to focus long enough when working in retail)

Now, I realize this is hardly a fair representation of the company as a whole, but rather an individual, but I believe it to be rather telling about the company that they should employ such a person for a management position. All efforts to contact my district manager were rebuffed, met with disinterest and utter disregard for my opinion. I'm a polite person. I never once spoke ill of my manager, either to herself or to the district manager. I was simply requesting that the conditions of my employment as well as basic necessities be met. After all, it was a part-time position.

I still keep in touch with my coworkers, though another one has since left (she left a week after I did, in fact). Evidently, the manager has elected not to hire any new hands, but instead rely on two part-timers to run the store for her, as that's all that remain of our staff. Absolutely ridiculous.

Even though I was warned in 4 interviews that it would be difficult to work with the Bottle Shop Manager, I was extremely excited to work here. I learned quickly that the warnings were justified. She treated me like she did not want me there from day one. Never helpful in training, answered questions very brief, very defensive if you made any suggestions, was never open to any changes or improvements. If it wasn't her idea it was a bad idea. I learnt every thing I knew from the employees on the floor. Employees were scared of her, always looking over my shoulder to see if she was around when they talked to me on the floor. I reported to her indirectly and also to her boss that I was lucky to see once every 2 weeks. I raised my concerns to our boss on numerous occasions and was always told to be patient. I would not recommend a position in the bottle shop until she retires. The rest of the staff in the other departments were amazing and great to work with. The work environment outside the bottle shop was very good. Very disappointed that I could not perform to my high standards and that this position did not work out because of one person. The culture is changing in the right direction but not quick enough in the bottle shop.

I loved working as a server at Peller Estates!! I fell in love with the wine industry and plan to continue exploring this venture. 

Made so many lifelong friends and learned so much! Lots of different and diverse tasks, never a dull moment!! 

Serving taught me how to handle hectic tasks and situations, how to focus on the customer, and many other valuable things. 

Running winery tours at Peller showed me how much I love being a tour guide! I’m currently a tour guide in another position which has been amazing so far!!

Selling wine club subscriptions to guests really helped me strengthen my knowledge in sales and marketing which is the path I’ve planned to go down. I learned so much about customer behaviour and how to appeal to all different kinds of audiences. 

If you’re interested in getting into the hospitality business, having APL on your resume will definitely set you apart. A staple in the Canadian wine market and a well established business.

I work with the wine making team and manage the 20 unionized employees in the wine cellars. I issue the work orders and ensure the work is completed correctly and on time. I am responsible for the 3.5M budget that it requires to successfully run the wine cellars. I work closely with planning, production, quality and logistics to deliver the schedule. I enjoy working with the wine making team and continually learning. Although the job has challenges, it is equally rewarding. The most enjoyable part working with my co-workers, finding solutions to problems that arise and receiving awards for our wines knowing I had a part in it.

I loved the people I worked with. They all had so much knowledge to share and were so fun to work with; however, one of the managers I had didn't seem to like me and gave me a hard time constantly but would be nice to my face if I called her out on it.
The manager told me that I hadn't done anything wrong in the workplace which leads me to believe the treatment I got was based on the fact that I didn't worship the ground she walked on and follow her without question.
The estate manager and assistant manager are amazing, kind, and fun people though. So overall a decent work experience.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Safety is the most fundamental part of their company. Excellent management team and members of staff. I would recommend anyone who is looking for a job that allows you the opportunity for advancement and opportunity to experience the fun atmosphere of interacting  with people who are passionate about wine and a good time.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Knowing the your shift is ending and the party is over.

Safe fun and great coworkers and just a friendly fun atmosphere.

I can’t think of anything that would be considered stressful about working at Andrew pellers.

It feels more like a resort than a work place.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I would arrive to work look over on my job orders then decide which one to prioritize. From there, I would start the job that I chose until the days ended.

Gretzkys is a great place to work if you’re an experienced server. They will hire with no serving experience, a few shadowing shifts but little to no training at all. The company has great benefits and overall and fun work environment however working on the patio, they’re open rain or shine, snow or heat wave. be prepared to face mother nature!! tips are also pooled and are hard to breakdown when budgeting. management is somewhat organized for how large of a team there is however not open to new suggestions or ideas ever.

The company overworks their staff and does not treat them right. Regardless of your years of  experience they will promote the young pretty staff over someone who knows how to do the job already

Greeting guests and taking phone calls. Making reservations for all properties for guests coming In

For a public company they are oddly run like a small family business. This style creates a backwards thinking culture that fights change and its drawn to quick results, in particular to sectors of the business that executives aren’t knowledgeable about. They stumble more than they are able to move forward with confidence. Very frustrating place to work in.
