Ah, ArcelorMittal Dofasco! Where the sky's the limit, as long as that limit is within the budget constraints set forth by a microscopic line item in an excel sheet. Where the heart of an employee isn't measured by the passion for their work, but by the amount of raw profit they can churn out from their veins. But hey, the co-workers are the best you'd ever find. Imagine the camaraderie of comrades in the trenches, except the trenches are steel mills and the comrades, your fellow profit-miners.

After joining, the company does put a rather generous vacation pay on the table, a veritable feast for the starved employee. However, don't be too quick to don your Hawaiian shirt and pack your bags for the Bahamas. You see, it's like an elaborate, corporate sleight of hand. Give notice before two years of employment, and poof! Your vacation pay disappears faster than you can say "unfair labor practice". But where's the fun in vacationing before two years anyway? The thrill of the steel mills, the clanging and banging, is the only music you'll need.

Looking for the exact rules on these policies? My friend, welcome to the enchanting labyrinth of ambiguity that is ArcelorMittal Dofasco's policies. You could potentially get lost in it, like in an abstract art piece where each stroke represents the existential dread of an employee trying to comprehend their rights. Not only do you sign to agree to the company's terms, but you also unwittingly sign up for an intense workout for your problem-solving skills. It's like playing 4D chess with a twist, except the twist is that the rules keep changing.

So, to sum it up, ArcelorMittal Dofasco is a monolithic behemoth of a company that sometimes feels like a high-octane, corporate Hunger Games, where every ounce of profit is the coveted Cornucopia. But it's not all gloom and doom, the people are fantastic. They are the silver lining in the stormy, gray clouds of the Dofasco experience. 

After all, in the immortal words of The Rolling Stones, you can't always get what you want. But if you try sometimes, you might find, you get what you need. And ArcelorMittal Dofasco, in its own unorthodox way, gives you just that. Work here is a rollercoaster, but remember, rollercoasters can be fun, provided you don't mind the occasional nausea and the frequent screams.

End of the day, if your heart has an unexplainable fondness for steel, enigmatic policies, and a unique corporate adventure, Dofasco might just be the place for you.


ArcelorMittal Dofasco (AMD) is a great company with lots to offer. While you aren't getting top base salary because it's Hamilton, (not Toronto), there is VCP, profit sharing, benefits, and events throughout the year. (Family Day, Canada Day, Christmas Party, Team Orange - volunteer opportunities) 
Because of the size of Dofasco, there are opportunities to move around within. Also with a lot of people reaching retirement age, there is also room for advancement. 

There is a lot of movement within, chosen moves, and/or secondment/ special assignments. Things stay fresh and engaging allowing for development and knowledge transfer.

The people with many years of service are sometimes bitter because they remember how things "used to be" and miss the good times. But they stay and wait out retirement. 

Health and Safety is the company's number one priority. With the majority of employees being in production or out in the plant, ALL employees have to learn and complete H&S learning modules regardless of role, which can feel excessive and not relevant to an office job,  BUT, you'd be pleasantly surprise how that affects you in error personal life - in a good way!

The people are great,  for the most part. Of course, you are always going to get your bad apples, and they can really put a damper on things. 

Diversity and Inclusion is recognized and promoted, including women in the workplace. Sometimes I feel like these initiatives have gone a bit overboard and I wonder sometimes if the right people are getting the jobs or if they are just trying to fill quotas.

For office staff, it's an 8.5 hour day. (8 hours, plus 30 min unpaid lunch)

The Dofasco is part of the larger ArcelorMittal group, as a result, there are processes in place that cannot be bypassed and hands are tied. Certain things are difficult, and/ or impossible to work around. I.e. salary bands, employee review process and rating system. Sometimes I miss being part of a smaller company where there is more ease and flexibility.

While I'd love to say this place is great it's far from that.  The opportunities to learn as a technology/engineering person are significant and if your in "the group" you'll advance. Also, if you tow the company line then you should also do well.  Operations makes good money but it's a very harsh environment and shift work.  Maintenance makes good money too but again it is a harsh environment

Negatives - There is not enough money to sustain this business - for instance you have to take you're own garbage out and the cleaning services are atrocious.  Get ready to mop your own floors and sit on dirty toilets.  While they rake in 100's of millions in profits they continuously cut back on benefits, training and pay.  Wage increases are below real inflation rates.  Perks - what's that.  Need a pair of safety boots - please bring me your shoes so I can measure the tread depth.  Training - sorry no external training this year, or last.  New uniforms - no way; there's cutbacks so we're actually taking some away.  Also, welcome back to the 70's way of thinking.  Management is trying but suffers from severe disorganization.  They are trying however.  This is a dying industry.  Don't be fooled.  It will be under severe pressure for many years and the new owners are making sure they get every last cent.  Even if it means the little guy loses.  It's toxic - literally.  

Positives - The old management team actually cares about the employees.  They're trying to stay family oriented.  The amount to learn is immense as is the ability to acquire skills for tech.  But advancement is not worth it.  Get the skills and get out!  Again very family oriented.  But that won't pay for the broken tooth I have which benefits does not cover.

a typical day at work; 
Load/Unload trucks while being harassed and targeted by management who directs employees to perform unsafe tasks against company and goverment safety standards. When safety violations are reported management will not stop harassing employees and creating toxic work conditions till those employees quit. 

what you believe you learned; It’s a very unsafe environment to work. There is no employee loyalty or job security. Management seems uneducated on safety protocols, even safety team is highly lacking in “safety” adherence 
and refuses to follow known procedures. HR is not your friend and will not help protect you from harm be very careful if you ever go to them for help they will back the toxic managers every time. You have zero protection at this only unionized location. 

management; many unqualified, unethical, refuse to follow protocols, covers up their buddies safety enfractions for each other then head hunts employees who made the safety complaint. 

workplace culture; toxic workplace culture. They don’t follow their own company principles. You’re always looking over your shoulder. Be careful you always have a witness to everything and every conversation. 

the hardest part of the job; the stress of the shady toxic management. Lack of job security, reduction of hours due to unstable sector. Trying to stay safe in a dangerous work environment. Trying to work safe while working under such stressful conditions. Inter department turmoil. Shifts & different departments being pitted against each other to fight. 

the most enjoyable part of the job; going home at the end of the day. 

Was hired for a specific role in the IT department but the “specialist” whom I was hired to help didn’t want to train.  I sat there for over a year doing pretty much nothing.  I would ask to help/work so much the manager told me to stop asking.  The group and manager I worked with were highly unprofessional to the point that it was abusive.  Team members would yell and walk out of team meetings almost every week.  They would trash talk each other behind backs.  

A common occurrence would be that I was told wrong information by senior team members (absolutely clueless old guys who literally made up nonsense when they didn’t know what they were talking about) then the same guys would complain about you.  Even worse if you actually fixed an issue after you were told bogus information they would complain about you. 

Same old guys would chat it up all day either on the phone with personal calls or in person with other co-workers, but if you make one phone call to your doctors office they complain about you making personal calls. 

Management didn’t care about anything going on as they were retiring in less than a year. New tech-leader in training was one of the most miserable human beings on earth who would regularly trash talk his own family and children, the job, and co-workers. 

My predecessor left this position because of the same issues.  They would constantly trash talk him. 

My father died during my employment here, they would literally make jokes about it.  I had to take a medical leave and the day I came back I was let go. 

This was one of the most dysfunctional jobs I have ever taken.  These were some of the most sub-human people I’ve ever worked with.

I worked for this employer for over 20 years and hated it.
I left because I foresaw the wage and benefit cuts and was fed up with the politics. 
The work schedule is 12 continental and wears on a person very quickly.
I walked out the door with over 20 years of experience. My supervisors all had far less seniority and experience than I did but were promoted because they were friends of management. 
The training program was never that good but has been affected even further by the drain of experienced personnel-myself included. 
This employer has a middle management problem. Middle managers/supervisors are often small minded,vindictive and insecure. HR at DOFASCO often looks the other way while supervisors "sewer" the careers of employees they don't like. 
I saw more people forced out the door or reprimanded into discouraged silence by small minded, vindictive supervisors while HR looked the other way. 
Due to the fact that there is no union, employees have no real recourse or protection from these types of practices. 
I would strongly recommend against even taking a short term position with this employer.

It's a busy place with outdated process documents and an older mindset of working which makes it an excellent place to showcase your skills and make contributions and improvements. The people are very welcoming and good to work with. There are numerous training and growth opportunities and the company invests in developing their workers. The work can be challenging due to the conflicting demands and balancing all your duties but provides the perfect conditions to develop you time management and prioritization skills. There's also a wide range of exposure to various H&S activities. 

The hardest part of the job is keeping up in the fast-paced environment and ensuring things get done in a timely manner.

The most enjoyable part is the conversation with the colleagues and friendly and open environment of the place from Management down to every last employee, once you get to know everyone.

They don't practice what they preach.  Very clique-y.  Many supervisors don't have any experience in their departments about the jobs they except what they know on paper.  Getting written up is like national past-time there.  Sign up for o/t wrong, take initiative to display your skills, not wear your safety and high vis even in the parking lot = written up.  They fire people for no reason.  They want sheep.  Not smart people.  Sad when they promote a known crack user and a former Circus Clown to Team Leader!  If you work too hard your co-workers will threaten you and the company does nothing about them especially if they are senior employees.  They encourage employees to "rat" on one another 2x every month.  If all this honesty was in their job ad I wouldn't have applied.  BTW: if you make a mistake you risk getting demoted to another on-site company (same work) that pays $7 less/hr for months! 

Responsible for and completed several total code conversion and redesign projects for steel mill automation and tracking software from Visual Basic to C# or ASP.NET, connected to Oracle SQL Database.

Identified and corrected existing problems in legacy software as well as providing bug and development support for automation software as well as software deployment code running in Excel and VB.

Also designed and deployed an updated Help system for automation software, migrating from Windows Help to a web based wiki.

The people were mostly friendly and the atmosphere felt like an old school union shop, but management was unwilling or unable to keep up with new technology. The software had a feeling of 'don't touch it as long as it keeps working', which is the opposite mentality to modern software development and the technical debt was immeasurably huge. Also, the physical work environment of the Hot Mill was distracting.
