When you plan to hire somebody to train them when you fully acknowledge they do not have all the required skill sets for the position, make sure you have a plan in place for on-boarding and ensure that the trainer is in fact training the employee properly and respectfully. The retiring employee was outright disrespectful to me and refused to train me, while lying to management that I was not willing to learn. You were given plenty of messages that the individual was doing this but decided to "take their word for it" belittle me for not complying with being treated poorly. Look at what it cost you. A potential future claim against Arterra in the works because you decided to try and sweep something under the rug. To the "retiring" worker I have only this to say: I am extremely appalled by your horrible and disrespectful behavior. You are 65 years old, a grown mature adult and trying to sabotage / destroy someone's potential future to save your spot a few more months at best. You are a completely disrespectful, rude and outright pathetic human being with how you treat others and you do NOT nor NEVER deserve your pension with how you acted. You are a complete disgrace to the community and the industry and you will only be remembered for destroying someone's future dreams for selfish desires. Also a pretty poor decision to be disrespectful and potentially discriminator to an employee, given your West Coast facilities are mostly in small towns or out of reach to resources. A lot of candidates in today's world do not drive or have good credit or spot on skill sets to the degree you are seeking. You cannot afford to be extremely picky with the hiring process if you cannot be flexible. You got hardly anyone in your remote locations that can work so far from living. Also a very bad move for a location in a very small town. Word spreads like wildfire in small places. Once one person knows you are discriminating and disrespectful, everyone will know in that small town who you are. You just killed whatever new employees walking through that door and will only see Arterra as a place who discriminates against their employees. Not a smart move to make Arterra. For a company boasting that they deal with harassment fairly and treat employees like equals regardless of gender, race, preference, religion, disability etc. you sure missed the mark pretty far.

Oh FYI, that new job posting is NOT in Summerland, it's in Oliver. They changed it on my first day and lied to me. They are lying right now again.

You will be a cog, there is no opportunity for advancement, job satisfaction or living wage.  No one cares you as an employee, just lift 100’s boxes and sell what is becoming increasingly awful wine.  Even the managers have no say in anything, right down to what wines to sample.  If you somehow manage to actually achieve the sky high targets, you might get a gift card that won’t even cover dinner.    Don’t worry about having wine knowledge, or acquiring any while you work there, it won’t do you any good, all they really want from you is a SMARTserve and a pulse in exchanges for barely over minimum wage and paltry hours for back breaking labor, as any shift over 5hrs earns you a half hour unpaid deduction for your “break”. Oh and if you’re reliable that will earn you every delivery shift where you will lift 100’s of cases (if you are really lucky) 3 other people who may or may not be helpful or capable.

Anybody could do this job and you get free wine.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Management is a atrocious and you're surrounded by mouth breathers from the second you walk in the door till the second you leave.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Workplace harassment is alive and well in Arterra. The company policy states that there is a 'zero tolerance' policy toward any workplace violence or harassment until it actually happens and then the HR and management team work together to sweep it under the rug. If you're a good little yes man that will keep his mouth shut and do what he's told like the rest of the boys on the floor then this place is the job for you.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Picking cases, loading trucks and operating heavy machinery

Arterra's been a great place to work since I've started. I work in the bottle shop maintenance and have recently had the chance to work in the cellars maintenance department. It's a laid back experience compared to other places I"ve worked, as long as youre completing the work assigned to you, management will let you do your work. 

The place is starting to have a culture shift as new management is taking over. I've seen an improvement in quality standards, inventory systems, equipment maintenence and overall manufacturing efficiency. 

I think its one of the most stable industries to be in and I'm glad I've sfsked my career here. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
There is as such no best part, the company does not go care about it's employees whatsoever. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
There is no set road for fast track promotion or promotion based on merit. Becoming a manager in this company is purely by chance, luck and staying at one place for decades or years. Not the best place to work, no benefits, not much pay, no designation, but they will want you to work as a manager. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment is very toxic. They have their own people growing withing the company for years, but have no regards for new talent who is proving to be a great player at every step.

My manager was amazing. Very understanding and sweet. They do not do full time hours unless you are management so if you want full time you have to go through a lot of steps to become management. The safety of employees is not their strong suit. The location I worked at is downtown Toronto and we constantly had issues with security and thefts. They often leave employees alone for long hours including young women. In a store that serves and sells "liquor" items this is a problem. The staff often get threatened or harassed and the company can't seem to really have a solution to the problem. No security guard and they often cut hours as well to the point they have young women closing a "liquor" store alone until 11 30 at night.

Decent pay, The benefits and free wine. Also, just being able to always learn new things

The lack of communication between management, the frequency of mistakes with employees paycheques. The lack of care for the employees well being. Disorganization, lots of down time due to poor maintenance on certain shifts

The work environment is uptight. And lots of workplace drama most of the time

Busy, stressful, overworked, tiring

Wine Professionals! Avoid this company if you want to grow and learn and have a future in the industry! 
No future in this company as they just hire Assistant Manager for the season! Yes, they hire this position every season so now you know the turnover! 
Terrible work environment and culture and it surely will consume you! Wineries are operating based on nepotism and favouritism. If you have inner connections and good relationships with upper management, you don't have to sweat and will get promoted by sitting there and gossiping about colleagues who work hard. 
If you are looking for a seasonal/ entry-level management job and learn about the worst human nature, give it a try! The salary and benefits are not the worst in the Niagara Wine Industry!

The company is going through a huge change and cleaning house; huge turn around of employees. They even fire people who come back from leave or have been with the company for decades.
Very little room for advancement. The only way you get a better position is if you got hired into it or a boss leaves.
There are some nice people that work there, but there are also people who will degrade you and make your time there miserable. 
The benefits are good and they have company events, but the overall culture of the company is lacking because they don't know who they are due to the many company/owner changes.

You work mostly independently. Management is scares and does not provide much feedback. There has been a tremendous turnover in management, which could be why feedback is not adequately shared. As a front-line employee you’re constantly adapting to a new management style, being flexible is crucial. The opportunity to learn and grow is preached but not fully supported, thus advancement is seldom. If you’re an independent individual, you’ll do just fine. Remember to make work fun, if you’re considering this organization.
