Ashton College

As the title says, the "ground level" staff were great to work with. Everyone worked together well, and there were only a few moments of the typical workplace drama. That's mostly unavoidable no matter where you go, though.

Communication between the team members is both incessant and non-existent at the same time. You are constantly interrupted during your work day with instant messages from your coworkers asking questions regarding issues on their end and requests from management that could be done on their end, but for whatever reason is given to you instead (ie, booking meetings, looking up information for them, etc). 

Meetings were often booked with hardly any notice which forces you to drop what you're doing to attend a meeting which will usually result in very little information being shared/addressed and always go at least 30 min - 1 hour over the scheduled interval.

Within the past year at Ashton, several people from different departments left, but were never replaced. One department in particular went from 3 full time staff and 1 part time to 1 full time staff and 1 part time. To this day, the other 2 full timers have not been replaced (as far as I'm aware) and the single person left in that department now has the job of 3 people. Any inquiry to when someone else may be hired was met with a wishy-washy "Nothing yet, but we'll let you know" which was only meant to keep you quiet until you silently accepted the new duties as your own with no change in pay, title, or job description update. The request that "If no one else is going to be hired, pay, title and job description all need to be renegotiated" was met with passive aggressiveness and a "non-answer" which promised and answered nothing.

The few good things about working here were the people I worked closely with as we shared a very good relationship and had lots of fun together. Some of my coworkers had dogs and were occasionally allowed to bring them in which obviously made everything better.



The work location is great but the pay is low and there's no advancement at this place. There is no workplace culture at all, and the hours for work are long (ex. 8am to 5pm, 1 hour unpaid). Management is another story, they hire senior managers who do not have the qualifications or experience to do the job right and seem to pass on their work to "assistants" or other departments. There's a high staff turn-over rate due to the fact that they hire the wrong people in senior positions and people leave because management is awful. Also super unprofessional when it comes to dispute resolution and seem to not care about the people at the bottom who are actually doing the grunt of the work.

My recommendation is higher the right people in senior management who have 1) at least a 4-year undergraduate or masters degree from an English-speaking countries (this is so important as people can say they get a degree from x, y, z but when it comes to the work they have no idea what they are doing) 2) managerial experience - this should be a no-brainer but a manager who supports their team, take accountability, and motivate others it is so simple but this place really lacks this. 

I highly recommend people who are interested to apply to this college to really save themselves the trouble and look at other places. Not a good place to work at.

I love working for Ashton College! I started working as an Administrative Assistant for the Human Resources department and less than a year later, I was promoted to the Human Resources Coordinator and I run my own department which is rare for someone with a bit less than 2 years of industry experience. The management give a lot of autonomy and focus on empowering staff and letting you run your department. I have learned so much and Ashton has helped me grow on both a professional and personal level. 

If you want to be in an environment where you have opportunities to learn, advance, take charge and grow without having a manager breathe down your neck, this is definitely the environment for you. 

It can be challenging to run your own department and it is a lot of work but at the same time, you can go home each night feeling like you made a difference and are growing with the College.

I've worked at Ashton College for three years. I started as a junior marketing assistant, and now I manage a small team in charge of digital marketing.

The best thing for me working here is the ability to make creative decisions and lead a team. It is a small institution and the budgets that I have to work with are not large, but to me that makes the job even more interesting because you can't fall back and engage in standard marketing tactics, instead you have to get creative and think outside the box. 

I feel like I've developed professionally over the last three years, which perhaps wouldn't have happened as quickly at a larger, more "corporate" organization. A small company is great because you know everyone in the office.

The most enjoyable part of my job is being able to make an impact and being able to see results of what your doing quickly.

I'm a Co-op student at Ashton College, and have been working here since January 2016. It has been a great experience so far. On top of getting the opportunity to work with my amazing team, I have participated in activities pertaining to other departments as well. This allowed me to go out of my scope and learn new skills.

As many departments are inter-connected here, you can't survive without constantly being in touch with other departments and this is one of the things I love the most about working at Ashton College. I have learned a lot from all staff members here, as they all bring with them unique sets of expertise and knowledge.

In a nutshell, I would say I truly appreciate the friendly work environment here and have learnt a lot over the past few months.

The workday is typically long here, expect to work a full 8 hours and uncompensated 1 hour for lunch. Ashton used to be a good college however, due to losing a major program, they are starting to really go downhill. All the longtime employees have left Ashton and are jumping ship elsewhere as they can see that there's no future at this college. Ashton is trying their best to stay relevant and innovative by creating new programs but that has been unsuccessful. 

During my time working at the college, management been has less than stellar with their knee-jerk decisions. In the near future, this college will likely close its doors due to the lack of student enrolment and lack of revenue. I would not recommend anyone to apply or work here.

he could be better, but we’re lax and that it makes up for and a healthy work environment and in the training and experience it gives you to move on better things in life

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Like a family one of the most healthy work environment places I have ever worked in. They generally care about their employees.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Come in and get caught up on what things I need to do and then go

They keep the instructors on a course to course contract, which asks for a few hours work per week for a good payment. Once you start teaching, they expect you to work almost full time for a very low salary. They expect you to sacrifice your full time job and personal life. In new contracts they add to the number of teaching hours and responsibilities without discussing it. Very little support for the instructors and a lot of expectations. Don't expect to be treated well by your manager. The management could go as far as calling you day in and day out

A typical day at work is juggling multiple projects with no budget or real power to execute campaigns. The Director talked behind employee’s backs and had unrealistic expectations of staff. Staff that stayed were very unhappy and new hires had no idea what was expected of them because the job description and interview process was quite different once hired. The hardest part of the job was to figure out what the Director really wanted because he changed his mind so often. The most enjoyable part of the job was going home.

The established curriculum and support from the administration, eliminated any opportunity for stress.

Very positive and supportive to part time instructors.

3 hour class instruction, followed by one on one sessions with students.
