Good place if you don't have any experience and want to get into the finance industry, then take advantage of working at ACU... You will learn the basics but nothing much more than that after you learned the basics. Once you have adequate experience, go get fairly compensated somewhere else. If you have decent work experience at another institution, then unless they really overpay you, STAY AWAY. The "executive management team" is nothing short of a joke. They are a joke because whenever a decision gets announced, you just start laughing because it was the wrong option they will choose almost every single time. Their bonus structure is simply pathetic (if they actually decide to give the employees one). Your annual targets are ridiculous high, and even if you hit them they will look for ways to cut you bonus. And even if they don't cut your bonus and you receive the "full one", it is a fraction of what any other bank would pay you with lower targets. So in your interview, if you choose to go, really ask them questions regarding the bonuses and how much they are. They make them sound like they are amazing but they are pathetic. Unless you are part of the executive management team who are overpaid and under worked individuals. The older VPs need to be replaced ASAP. They never should have ever gotten their positions and are just cruising everyday for their pension. Also in your interviews, make sure to ask the right questions regarding annual targets because as mentioned before, basically they are unattainable. But hey, even if your branch and no one on your sales staff reach their targets.... ACU will still increase them by minimum 10% next year because the management team does not have a single clue on how to manage targets for the company and the branches. Final note, if you are employed there and you say anything negative to the management team, you will be blackballed. The management team only wants to hear the items that fit their narrative and once they dont, your career is over.

If you want to work at a place where your annual targets are the highest in the industry and you are compensated near the bottom of the industry then ACU is the place for you! The "executive management team" all need to be replaced. They are a bunch of long time employees who have not worked at a branch in decades, and have no clue what issues that the regular employees have to deal with every day. You ask for anything more the absolute bare minimum to do your job, answer will be a no. Ask the executive management team "Can you please explain why our targets are higher than any of our competitors?" and you will get either "we shouldn't be comparing ourselves to other organizations or just a non answer and will sweep it under the rug. The executive management team need to be replaced with younger forward thinking individuals. I know you cant replace all of them at once but if you want to at least start heading in the right direction, please hand the female VP her termination papers. This lady couldn't manage herself out of a paper bag. Her go to move is the intimidation and short term fear motivators. If she was a Branch Manager in 2019, she would be canned in less than a year. Also If they find out that you are not drunk on the ACU Kool-Aid, you will never be promoted and they will find ways to not give you a raise. In the past 18 months, they have lost A LOT of very good long term employees who just had enough of they way they do things. If I was the CEO, I would be asking my VP's "what is going on with many highly valued employees leaving in the last 18 months? But he wont and the executive management team who are very highly paid for their lack of accountability is disgusting. It is pretty much a cult system. Beware!

I used to like my job - loved my branch, my coworkers, my manager. Now goals go up yearly, despite almost no one meeting the previous year's. There are new staff at head office hired from banks - they make significant changes at the branch level without any effort to understand frontline needs (i.e. new computer network that has made the job harder because it doesn't work well with all the outdated systems). Despite being constantly short-staffed, tellers are now expected to leave the front line to make sales calls (tellers are not supposed to be sales staff. No change in pay to reflect this extra responsibility). Turnover is insane. Staff who have been here a decade or two are burnt out because upper management no longer cares about them. Members notice and complain about the turnover and worse service. Communication about covid has been awful. After the first few months branches stopped getting any support to enforce health regulations, but branch staff were blamed in a company-wide email when there was an exposure. They froze hiring and cut positions at short-staffed branches for "financial reasons" while creating new high-paid corporate jobs. 

Overall, I really enjoy working for Assiniboine. I interviewed with many competing credit unions prior to accepting the job and from experience can say we are the highest paid in the industry for our roles (mostly). The values of the organization are what make it shine. Committed to the community and truly doing so much for our city. All profits are donated/sponsored/grants back to local organizations and its amazing what we do to go above and beyond. Our jobs are high capacity but that’s the industry as a whole. Challenging but attainable goals, great senior leadership and branch management. The only challenge is I think a lot of staff feel like they’re not sure what they’re doing, and stronger training and resources could be put in place, but I know they’re working on this. Overall, great workplace and strongly recommend to begin your career in the financial industry. 

I enjoyed my time at ACU and most specifically the people I worked with. If this company wants to keep its valuable employees, they need to offer a competitive wage to start, and offer bonuses and/or significant wage increases every year. What you are expected to do on a day-to-day basis (being at work for 8.5 hours+ depending on if closing takes a while, and also travelling to different branches with no compensation for gas) is not worth the low salaries they offer. Also, the benefits are worse than the benefits I had while being a student so I opted out of them and used my student benefits.

Goals continuously raised, "grace" given to us with Covid for goals but barely any changes were made - so 90% of us as tellers were unsuccessful to their standards. They took away bonuses for Covid but received a healthy sum from the government but still required everyone to have met their goals to receive bonus or variable pay. No grace. 
When hired as a teller you "float" and have to abide by many, many different managers rules and HUGE inconsistencies - and if you don't meet their expectation it's an awful passive aggressive mess everywhere you go. NOT TO MENTION the members hate it. 
HIGH turnover rate. Not a living wage.

The hardest part of my job was to be able to self assess at review time when you have been an employee fo 25 years and know your job and tasks inside and out.

The most enjoyable part of my job was the friendships that you build over the years and the experience that your co-workers shared with you.

its a decent place to work culture is okay everyone was very nice. I would recommend using this company as a stepping stone which is what it seemed most people were doing. They just don't pay very well. Completely ignore the pay range they post. Expect to only get paid the salary you negotiate when you first accept a position, the only raises you get wont even compensate for inflation. take a job here to get experience in a better position and move on. That's what all of my coworkers were doing. 

I worked at Assiniboine Credit Union for 6 years. I was at one specific branch location for 5 years and loved it. Very friendly atmosphere and  plenty of room for advancement. I was promoted twice with my branch to supervisor positions and three of my colleagues were promoted to positions within the company but at other branches. Unfortunately ACU as a whole has gone downhill in my opinion, by decreasing bonuses and employee benefits. (Not healthcare but parties, rewards, and perks).

Overall, I found that ACU is a great place to get your foot in the door and start out a career. Opportunity for growth within the company if you’re willing to put in the work and discuss your goals with your department leaders. 
Tons of opportunity for employee involvement through volunteering and employee run committees. 
Very fair compensation package in terms of salary, vacation, and health benefits. Part time employees qualify for health insurance, huge benefit!
