Assure Community Services

Assure Community Services is a good place to work if you are looking for part-time/causal hours or if you are working while in school. If you are looking to get a feel for social services, this is a decent place to start. The Executive Director is knowledgeable about Children's Services and the role of the agency. Management/Office Workers are often disorganized: emails are not always replied to in a timely manner, management calls last minute to organize/switch shifts. Things change often, so you need to be willing to go with the flow. 

Training is not provided other than a few hours of 'training' where they go through the company policies and procedures. Otherwise, you work completely independently with little to no oversight or assistance. This can be challenging if you are not confident working on your own. 
I would argue that there is no workplace culture - I always felt alone and I hardly ever got to work with others, if at all. 
The things I enjoyed about this job were the flexibility to make my own schedule, and the great youth I had the opportunity to work with. 
Otherwise, the pay was adequate, but not sustainable, and the hours were limited, especially during the school year when most children/families are busy during the day. As it is a casual contract position, there are no benefits. There were also no opportunities for advancement within the organization. 

Care and compassion are a huge part of the work culture at Assure. If you have a big heart for supporting children and families through some of the toughest seasons they might experience it's a great job to have. That being said, burnout can be high depending on the clients and service demand.  Job security is high at Assure as they are always looking to hire experienced workers and hours are flexible. I was able to work some consistent hours during the 2020 pandemic. However, even with flexible hours, it can be challenging because things change all the time! Sometimes you don't get your shifts until the night before because of cancellation.
Most of the support work that is done requires extensive reporting that can take extra time out of shift work hours (sometimes 1.5- 2 hours) the time spent reporting is often unpaid. This can be very frustrating because you don't always have time to write them on shift. 
-Management is very supportive and helpful with conflict. However, they can be a bit unorganized at times and mandatory training can be last minute.
- It can be a bit challenging to find community because you often work alone.
-Your vehicle is your office, but you get paid KMS!!


When there is a conflict between a worker and a client (and there will be because of the nature of family support work) I witnessed that Assure will always side with the client. Meaning, no matter how hard you work, how good you are at what you do, or even if there was nothing you did wrong and/or the conflict was not preventable be prepared to be thrown under the bus. They have an extremely high turnover rate and they will replace you without batting an eye. The worse part is that they will most often soft fire you. Meaning they will just stop giving you the amount of hours you are accustomed  to working without notice or explanation. 

When I was hired, I was told I would have the ability to work over 40 hours a week if I wanted and set my own schedule. I ended up only getting around 10-15 hours a week. Shifts were sent out the night before which made it very difficult to schedule anything in my personal life, but I needed to take any shift I was given to gain more hours. Management isn't always available via phone when you need them, and most contact is done via email.

A typical day depends on how many cases are sent to you and how many you accept, very inconsistent hours throughout the day/ work week. The pay depends on which service you provide (transport, supervising a visit or supporting a visit). I learned a lot about supporting families and how to properly format reports, more training would have been beneficial. Management communicates through email so it is very impersonal.

It’s disappointing to see how toxic the work environment is, given the important work done. Nothing is ever organized, management is terrible and the boss acts like she knows everything and is incredible, but it feels like ego runs everything. Folks will never get properly let go, you will get soft fired and just never hear from them again. It’s a crazy way to run a business and I truly do not believe they have anyone’s best interest at heart. 

Working with Assure is great especially because of the flexibility that is allowed with regards to availability. Management is great and there is a lot of understanding in the part of management which is a good thing. The hardest part is the wage rate which is on the lower side. If the wage rate could be adjusted upwards to match that of other organizations in the sector, that will make Assure a more likable organization.

They will call, email, text you 24hr-7 days a week for shifts, if you cant take them they treat you like you're inhuman. managers have zero respect for your personal life because this job has taken over their whole life.

They make tons of money off you and do not pay you close to the hourly wage they charge. 

you work at your own pace, choose the shifts you want. The pay is not exactly competitive. This job is good for getting experience but lacks consistency in shift work. You are exposed to various aspects of the industry. I had had a reasonably good experience, but have heard of stories and various bad experiences with other staff. Employees are basically contract and have no benefits

The most enjoyable part of the job was working with children and families and knowing it had a positive impact on them.

The most difficult part of the job was the disorganization within management; shifts that were cancelled were not always relayed to the individual prior to the shift starting.
