Typical day: med pass, wound care and talking to residents and their families 

I learned that there are better places to work 

Management/Workplace; absolutely TERRIBLE. Things are spread around the building within HOURS. Everyone talks about everyone and acts like their stuff don't stink. No one helps anyone and floors are “one man for themselves”. There are no consequences for those who break rules of safety/or harassment. Memos are passed around left, right and centre but never followed through or followed up. Management makes you feel useless and pathetic and often are the starter of drama. Don’t even think about asking for time off because you’ll never get, especially if it’s a serious and/or last minute thing. Do you have children or do you ever Call in sick or have an emergency? Don’t bother applying because they’re make you feel bad about calling in.  Also will fire anyone for anything, especially when WE NEED the staff.

Hardest part of the job; dealing with everyone, hearing the most bizarre things about yourself, no support from staff or management, being short staffed (which yes, is everywhere). No staff appreciation, terrible management.

There’s a reason why there is so much overtime here because no one wants to work here. 

Most enjoyable: there are some wonderful resident's there. And yes, the OT is nice

Do yourself and your mental health a huge favour and apply somewhere where you will be happy!

The place  is nice and clean because it is new, but the set up inside is not very resident friendly. This place specialized dementia and complex care.  but the rooms are all carpeted, no ceiling lifts, most bathrooms are tiny, their tubs are not  designed for these types of residents and a whole lot  of other things.  Management is for profit and for profit alone.  They don't take care about their  staff. It is like pulling teeth if staff requests, complain, etc over something. . They don't listen to staff, Most managers like to intimidate and bully. A very expensive place but so cheap,  and extremely limited in supplies.  No peri wipes, towels and other stuff on the weekends, It is ridiculous. We have to hunt  for supplies  on every floor, rooms, everywhere sometimes which is a very big  no no .Very high turn over of LPNs and HCAs because lots of employees are frustrated and stressed out. If you are a new HCA or LPN. this could a be a good starter  so you can have experiences working in a very stressful, and frustrating place.  For those who have years experience, maybe look somewhere else.

Unfortunately this place is not anywhere I'd recommend to work. With the constant understaffing, and the never ending problems that are continuously ignored by management and supervisors, its clear that the well-being 
of the building is not a priority. Communication is usually provided in sub par forms, like writing it  in a communication book but no enforcement of requests are ever upheld. 

The overall culture of the building is every man forthrmselves. There are a few supportive people, but in the end are not enough to make the job enjoyable.

Currently at this time staff have still not been retro paid for waged owed from the new collective agreement, and everyone has eagerly been waiting since the expired agreement from March 31, 2022.

Overall, I'd avoid working here if you are looking for a place to feel valued, appreciated for your efforts, or generally supported. This place can't do that for you.

Really sad watching this place go so down since this new GM has come into the building. It’s sad remembering what once was, and watching the Residents not getting  the proper care they need because management neglects their duties, and staff often do have the things they need to perform their jobs. In a perfect world the current GM would quite or be fired so we as a company can move forward in the right direction. The amount of staff and residents we have lost due to this staffing change is uncanny and it’s complete disheartening. I wouldn’t recommend applying here, atleast until management is changed, but even then. The damage has been done unfortunately. 
  

This would be a good start if you are a new grad, but if you have been a care aide in the industry for many years I would not recommend this place. There are no ceiling lifts in the rooms, the rooms have carpet which makes it hard to push the lifts around the room, and you barely have enough supplies to properly provide for the residents. Not to mention it's next to impossible to actually get vacation time off, and if you do happen to get approved for vacation you're made to feel guilty for taking the time off. The management team is notorious for belittling there staff and only getting staff "who go above and beyond" a Christmas gift card for Christmas 

During my time at Avenir, the staff, especially the HCAs where unprofessional and not trained properly to deal with dementia clients. The floors where constantly understaffed, both LPNs and HCAs, leaving the clients in their soiled briefs for long periods of time, causing skin problems and constant UTIs. The rooms are not client friendly, especially for the clients that needed lifts, the bathrooms are too small and the showers are slipping hazards. The HCAs don’t follow safety precautions, for example they don’t gown up while in isolation rooms, the best that they will do is glove up.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Unfortunately I found there to be a huge lack of support from management, and the union reps were unreliable, whereas if I had any concerns they would belittled me, & I found them to be unprofessional

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Busy on the floor with med passes, processing Doctor orders, contacting POAs, spending time with residents

This is my first pre lease building, having worked in the senior living area for over 20 years. It's exciting to watch the progress and be a part of the opening team. Having worked for big corporations previously, working for a family run company is inspiring. Seeing the passion and drive only inspires me to be better daily. Having the support of the management team and knowing I can reach out is key. I am excited about the future with this company and looking forward to learning more.

I worked here for 2 years. During that time multiple staff had the complex that they can do what they want and get away with it... because they can. They are always short staffed. Confidentiality is non-existent... you go to management about a problem work or personal and it is all over the building in a matter of hours. All they care about is money not the residents that live there.

I have been a casual at Avenir for aprox 6 months now. I love it there the staff work as a team and are always going the extra mile when short. The seniors are great. I feel a sense of belonging and the pay is incredible. Management is always helpful and informative. Two 15 min breaks and a half hour lunch makes for a smooth day without feeling overworked. My only con is that there’s just not enough hours for me. I’d love to be full time!
