What is the best part of working at the company?
The area or park you are in, if it is in fact a good destination park. You can take in the surroundings and enjoy some sense of humour with the campers.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The low wages and a very unstable working environment with super poor and inadequate living quarters. Two teared system of BC Parks, direct gov. employees are unionized whereas the park operators are slaved out contracted workers. Poor management practices and unqualified managers lead to prison guard/prisoner style cracking a whip on you daily to scrub toilets and handle a large volume of garbage!

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
There turns out to be a lot of back stabbing going on and built up resentments are tacky fully taken out on you effecting your esteem, hours and length of your employment. There are some awesome people and it is possible to have a good day, there is however to much wiggle room for abuse of authority and job security. If you are in a remote are, no financial compensation for travel and then there are supplies that can be 4hrs away in one direction. It can cost you financially working for BC Parks and after the season is finished what you hoped would become some savings turns out to be a pipe dream.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Start by scrubbing all the toilets, inside and outside and inside the toilets. Garbage collection by hand, tossing it all by hand (a practice that municipal workers are actually not allowed to do anymore due to the dangers of injury) so by hand into pick up trucks and then into bins. Collect all outstanding overnight payments from campers, clean sites collect trash, litter and fire pits of garbage. Reinforce the rules of the park act like no dogs no drinking no this and no that and address complaints. You are dressed sort of like a ranger but have to enforcement roll, with exception of starting the process with warnings and evictions. Work a gate house with a hectic and cumbersome reservation system. Sell fire wood and basically you don’t stop cleaning/stocking filthy summer abused  toilets.

What a job. You're expected to be a Peace Officer, carpenter, environmental technician, outdoor recreation educator, digital design artist, volunteer and student ranger supervisor, and ~sometimes~ first responder. The learning curve is steep, and often frustrating for all involved. Each day is different, from ebiking to boat patrols and heli ops to enforcement, I can't say I get bored. However, more staff is needed and more specialized positions need to be created. Management needs a lot of assistance too... when we have park management plans from the 60s and 70s, and budget cuts from the liberal era, with a skeleton workforce, operations are always scrambling to catch up. It's difficult feeling like you're always behind when you pour so much energy into the work.

If you like an environment with endless drama and awful management then bc parks is for you. They could care less about you and they pay awful wages for what they make you do. I’d consider that work for maybe 25 an hour. But otherwise absolutely not. Poor management, awful communication everywhere. Schedule changes every week. Approved time off will be changed at any time if it helps management. High and fast paced work, no benefits what so ever, awful place to work. You get a rare water break if it’s really hot but don’t count on it, they seriously don’t care about you.

The amount of young people that honestly don’t know how to work independently and to work hard

Lack of communication between the people in charge and those expected to know everything 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Load up my gear in the truck and go to work for the day

Everyone in the office was very friendly and happily introduced themselves and talked about there work. Was able to work with a large number of different people on a range of different types of jobs/tasks, both around the office and out in the field. The office mentality was very accommodating to any specific needs and restrictions that came up. Everyone worked together when needed and was always willing to offer a helping hand.

The management are kind and supportive.

The most enjoyable part is working with a great team of people.

You do a range of things for BC parks. You drive work vehicles to all the parks on the sunshine coast for work. It can get a bit busy arou d long weekends but your managers understand and will come help you. They're pretty good people and you get to see what Rangers and Conservation officer do. It is seasonal which some people dont mind. It also gives you some pretty good xp.

Typically we started the day checking and cleaning park bathrooms, raking campsites, and patrolling trails and beaches. We were given skills to help with maintenance, including taking water pressure numbers, landscaping, and litter pick up. Everyone got along well, and the workplace community was friendly and enjoyable.

A typical day volunteering with BC Parks included removing invasive plants from regional parks and planting/ restoring the native plants. I learned how to work in a team and to push myself physically. The other volunteers were very friendly and one would often make anew friend by the end of a volunteer session.

Honestly sucked to work here. The company was so short staffed but they still made the hiring process sooooo long. Once I started working there It was obvious they didn't know what they were doing. They never gave me the days off I wanted and were very selfish. The job also sucked, not what they told me.
