It all depends on the department you work for. In 5 yrs i worked at BDC - i experienced many positives and many negatives.

Originally procurement was under the Information Technology Silo since most procurement activities were for IT technology.  Management at the time took their time and taught me how to manage and launch procurement initiatives. I was hired for the position of procurement and vendor management - my strength was managing partners and clients. I was part of the procurement and vendor management office and within the 2 years i was allocated to a special project team that worked on a complete re-hall of the PVM head offices.  It was a great team with awesome individuals - real team players. I managed procurement processes for most technology that was being implemented along with architects and construction companies. Procurement eventually was moved under the finance team and new management came in place. With little regard to their employees and processes in place. New management provided little to know guidance and added stress and unpleasant environment.

A typical day was to recruit contract resources, schedule evaluation with Project manager and communicate with firms / suppliers. Once hired, coordinate the technicians and IT department to install all equipment, software, access.  Make sure the resource get a access security card, documents and so on. Also, take care of weekend access to the building for employees and answer any questions regarding their contracts and HR infos. Plan and move resources from building or floors to the other, from one project to the other. Learned how to manage 150 resources, use MS Project, SharePoint and EPM. Everyone very independent, hard to manage everything when no one really knows what to do, needed to be a very resourceful person and also write all job process.  So great to have the opportunity to work with really smart and hard working people.

Open culture, collaborative, decentralized. Enjoyed meeting  SMEs and helping grow their business with proven strategies and business model. How to work with other Crown corporations like  EDC, global Affairs and Provincial counterparts. Requires more strategic thinking to set programs that maximize impact and reach and make Canadian SMEs the most competitive in the world.

The company itself is a good company to work for but the environment is no longer about banking and strictly about sales. If you've sold a difficult product in your previous life than you will enjoy working on the front lines here. 

If you’re an immigrant in Montreal, do yourself a favor and stay away from this place. 

Promotions are given based on how funny your jokes are with the hiring managers and not based on your competency skills or your professionalism.

Everything about this place is about your image and how physically attractive you are. A lot of lies will circle around and a lot of gossip between employees is a common thing.

Only positive is if you have no growth aspirations, then you can relax and do a minimum work with very little effort and get an average pay.

BDC offers great opportunities and challenges. The mandate is one of the main reasons why I applied : help create and develop strong Canadian businesses through financing, advisory services and indirect financing, with a focus on small and medium-sized enterprises.  How can you not be engaged when you work for an organization with this mission?  People are extremely competent and collaborative, BDC is a great place to work and grow.

You teach, coach and advise small business owners on how to manage their finances and strategic issues. While the process is the same for each client, the priorities and issues are often different. This makes the role of an advisor challenging and exciting.

The work atmosphere is great, fantastic benefits, good pay, nice people, good work/life balance in general. But if you get a bad manager: oops. BDC tries to look the other way, shuffle you elsewhere, or stick their head in the sand rather than deal with the problem, especially if the manager meets their target.

The training and onboarding new hires are awfully disorganized, they always leave you hanging with your questions unanswered. Almost impossible to get promoted, their career development is terrible as it is extremely competitive to move up within the bank. The salary increase is not the greatest, it's unpleasant especially when you've contributed so much.

There are so many wonderful things about working for the company. My favorite is probably the flexibility I have with my hours. I also love the company culture and enjoy working with everyone. A lot of employees love their jobs because it looks great on a resume and allows them to gain a lot of knowledge.
