BLUSH LANE ORGANIC MARKET

I was hired in late November 2018 for a p/t position in their Produce Department. Everything was going just fine. I was showing up on time for my shifts and trying to do my job as best I could with the lack of training I was receiving. I noticed little things with the other employees like how too many people were now working there, how there was drama among the regular workers, favouritism, lack of safety for the workers, etc. The position they hired me for was entirely because they were rolling out a new grab and go section of sliced fruits and veggies so basically they needed a person early in the mornings to prep. I could tell very early on that the program would need continued improvements in order to not only be profitable but make getting the job done in a safe, timely manner. The kitchen was much too small to accommodate these needs. After my 2nd week on the job they fired me. Here’s how they did it (very sneaky btw): my produce manager called me a few days before I was to come in and told me that HE only needed me to start at 8:30am and not the original, usual 5am start. I asked why and HE said because they didn’t need me the whole day. So ok sure. I noticed that in Kronus (app you can download to see your schedule) had not been edited to reflect 8:30am start rather then 5am start. However I was told to come in at 8.30am. I figure HE was too busy to change this and everything was fine. So I walked into work with 10 minutes to spare. I hadn’t had a chance to take off my jacket when the store manager called me into the office with the Produce Manager present. Both guys handed me a termination letter. I asked why they were letting me go and they said, “it just didn’t work out”. At this I remembered they are not legally obligated to give a reason to termination in the first 3 months of pprobation yet I did nothing to prompt this termination. Later on I found out they hired too many people and they were losing money on their not so well thought out prep program. So in the end I am happy somewhere else but they wasted people’s time and effort and fired me right before Xmas. I was lied by these guys and probably set up to make it look like I was hours late to work and yet that was not the case. I wouldn’t apply here cause these people seem very shady. Also far leftist in my own opinion.

The head chef would always put up ads for jobs that weren’t available at one point we would have 15-17 people in a kitchen that can only have about 6-7 people in it and we would all be working on garbage carts and carts to transport food the only days it wasn’t that crowded was the weekends and even then it was still hard. There was one time me and another co work thought we had black mold (we didn’t) in the hood vents we brought it to the head chef and sous chefs attention and it wasn’t dealt with till I personally brought up with the corporate chef and then it was dealt with and we discovered that they get there hood vents cleaned ONCE A YEAR which is disgusting and I couldn’t believe we were preparing food around that along with we never deep cleaned unless me and one other staff member would push people to do deep cleans 
I remember the first time me and my other co worker did deep cleans it was a slow Saturday and we had nothing to do it took us 5 hours just to clean half the back wall and half the hood vents 
They were disgusting 
No one ever deep sweeper or properly cleaned the fridge 
It’s a great place to work if you wanna work for people who don’t a heck about there employees in the kitchen 
You won’t be properly trained and will be excepted to learn on your own cause we don’t train people :)

I enjoyed my time while I worked here for a few months, mainly cause my coworkers were incredibly nice people and the job was fun, but the main management definitely needs some training in social skills and empathy. I had two main older ladies as my managers and all of my interactions with them felt superficial - as if they saw me as a worker and nothing else. I would expect this if I were working at a place like amazon, but this is a small business and it was really unfortunate that I felt like everything I did was being judged harshly by the person who was supposed to be guiding me.

Since the company has a 3 month probation period for new employees, they can terminate you without any valid reason (which happened to me even after I asked several times for them to give me a solid reason), and it seems as though other people have experienced this as well. It was very disappointing, especially since it seemed like things were going so well.

Also, please be careful if you’re applying here and you're a student that takes transit. I asked for a more flexible schedule cause my bus times never aligned with the hours they gave me, and they refused, so I often ended up walking there/home in below zero weather. 

A typical day at work would be I open my till in the cash office then I would head downstairs put my cash drawer in the till and then I would start bagging apples and begin helping costumers and serving them throughout my shift.I learned that management was very nice and helpful, I learned about a variety of vegetables and some ways I could prepare them I also learned the history of Blush Lane Organic's. Management was helpful and nice but they didn't give me the hours that the manger and I had agreed on. I was looking for full time but would also take part-time with a minimum of 35 hours.My co-workers were very nice and helpful they guided me on how many kilos my apple bags should be and also showed me where everything is in the store if i need to grab more of something.The hardest part of my job was finding fruit and vegetables in the different categories on the flip chart.The most enjoyable part of my job was interacting with new people and helping others and learning new things everyday.

I've found Blush Lane to be a fantastic place to work! Being a student while also trying to juggle work, my wonderful manager has been super supportive in working my hours to suit my school schedule. 

Not only that, but when it comes to the work environment, I definitely feel listened too, and my training was well taught.

My only complaint at this point is the slight hypocrisy in complaints. A typical trend at blush is for cashier managers to be walking around the store, talking to people in other departments, and spending time in the back for what seems to be no reason as well as taking extra long breaks. It feels like a majority of the employees are aware of this.

But, if anybody else will do this, the managers will have a problem with it. If other people talk to members of cash, the managers will complain. If their other cash-mates take a couple extra minutes on break, they'll complain. While I don't work in cash, I have many friends who do who are always complaining about this. All in all, nice work place.

Managers did not know how to schedule and when to stop hiring unnecessary staff. You will likely never have guaranteed hours.
You might start off with promising hours but then they give you an excuse such as summer is slow for us. The real reason is, the management are not trained properly and some are as young as 23. This is also true for the supervisors. They are not trained to manage a team unfortunately. 

There is not much room for growth. The Managers and Supervisors essentially just get you to do the dirty work, so you don't feel apart of a team. 

 management is terrible. If you are caught talking to your coworkers the manager will take note of it and threaten to send you home or fire you. Everything is extremely dusty and in need of repair. The heat and plumbing breaks almost every month. You are expected to be at work 10 minutes early and clock out 5 minutes late. If you take too long on your break the manager will time how long you’re in the staff room. Extremely strict work environment, feels so toxic and it’s impossible to make friends with your co-workers, if talking is strictly prohibited. No sense of team work and everyone is expected to keep to themselves. Most people they hire stay for 2 weeks then release how terrible it is then quit.

The work place culture at this company is the best I've ever experienced. I can honestly say that the staff and managers all look out for one another and go the extra mile to be caring and humanize employees. I felt entirely comfortable to be myself each day and was encouraged and coached to become a better worker in creative ways. Very fun working here, helps build skills and confidence. The hardest part of the job varies by department but in general you have to be physically capable, and take care of your health as well as have an attitude of willingness and accountability. Management is easy to talk to.

I worked here for a short while but while I did I enjoyed what I did. Some times it was slow. Especially if you were doing the evening shift. However..  there was a variety of tasks that you could do. 

They split up the work. Between produce department, cashiers, groceries etc. You don't help others in other departments during shift but at the end of the every one pitched in to help one another close so we can all get out in a timely manner. 

Very inexperienced person managing HABC (health and bodycare) after only 2 weeks of working in the supplement industry. Probably because they could pay minimum wage. Manager had 2 breakdowns the first few months of my working there. Too much staff in one department, so of course not enough hours and then of course no consistency. Manager was all over the place with delegating, training etc. Quite simply, was never trained properly on how to manage a department, and employees. No warnings as to wrong doings, so no chance to change.
