Being an independent contractor with Barrantes will give you a huge variety of experiences in the community and you essentially make your own schedule because you hold the power to say yes or no to whatever shifts and clients you prefer. Everything will appear professional at first. It is all in the presentation. So keep your boundaries strong or you will be taken advantage of. As time goes on you will realize that you give them availability but they do not follow it. You will be asked to cover shifts when you clearly communicate you are unavailable. It is very chaotic scheduling. As with many other for profit contracting company in social services it is not about the clients it is about getting the contracts and filling the shifts to make the money. If you are going to work with this contracting company just keep it in your mind that you work for yourself. Don’t take 4, 5 or 6 hour shifts that are an hour drive from you. It makes no sense with the price of gas. Barrantes does not take off any taxes so you need to put away your portion of CPP and the employer’s portion because you are your own employer. Essentially, you make $18/hr not $25 or $26. Get your experience and move forward. This is not a long term place to be.

I would say this place sounds a lot better in concept than it is in reality. Their communication was spotty from the start, with a clear lack of inter communication between the managers and a very poor response time. Once working there, it felt like a complete scramble all the time, with a continued very ineffective communication platform. It just isn’t run efficiently at all, and trying to get the info you need for your clients is like pulling teeth. You’re basically just expected to figure everything out on your own, even though they say they’re there to help. I worked for a few months and then literally stopped hearing from them entirely with no explanation. Like, I got ghosted ha!

They offer a very flexible monthly pick up shift work schedule. First come first serve basis. You are a subcontractor. The Pay is very decent! Clients are semi-diverse, but mostly on the ASD spectrum (some verbal, some non-verbal, some with extreme behaviours!) So be prepared to do physical deescalations and psychological battles with clients! They do SMG training updates and all safety measures are taught well. Managers are overall friendly and fun. Coworkers sometimes have their internal dramas, so stay away from that if u must. Overall not a bad place to work, but this is definitely not a long term career path, for most people. Unfortunately, staff come and go all the time.

I been working with this company for more than a year now and the experience has been very rewarding. I found the the staff to be extremely supportive and accommodating. They are quick to address any questions or concerns one may have while with a client. There are many prospects for professional growth as the company invests a lot into employee training and safety. Above all else, the company values and appreciates its employees and the effort they put into supporting their clients.

I have been in this field for over 20 years and worked for a number of organizations. Barrantes and Associates has by far been the most supportive, flexible and accommodating company that I have worked for. The office staff reply immediately to any questions or concerns and management has always looked after me pertaining to schedule and how many hours I would like to work. It has been a very positive experience for me and I would highly recommend this company. 

From my first day working with Barrantes, I felt supported and welcome. All of my questions were answered, which eased my anxiety when becoming an independent contractor for the first time. The management team is really quick to respond and very supportive, especially after stressful sessions with clients. Every day is different and I am always learning something new!
