It's been a while, but I'm writing this review in contrast to another company I've previously quit with. 

In Ottawa, the customers are fantastic. Your coworkers? Fantastic. Management? Fantastic. The job? It's your standard fast food, but it's the culture surrounding it that makes everything great. 

Having great supporting staff and management that just cares is already major bonus over working other fast food places. Flexible hours, clear opportunities for advancement, bi-annual raises, and opportunities to work multiple locations for a change of pace (main booth vs seasonal canal), all while enjoying an easy going workplace is something you just aren't going to find in any other fast-food position. Beavertails is more than fast food, it's an experience. 

I miss working there every day. I miss the coworkers I started working with, the coworkers I trained on every duty. I miss having amazing management, let alone competent. I miss being happy to go to work more than anything.

If you find an opportunity to join Beavertails, please do. It's not perfect, and I will say my only gripe is the availability of hours during slow seasons for general staff. But the seasons pass and the hours are there if you want them. To make up for this, Beavertails goes out of it's way to excel in everything else. 

During my 2 year+ stay, I've never seen one person quit because they didn't like the place. Neither will you.

Worked at winter location on Rideau Canal so was always cold. Great people. Management was friendly. Coworkers were friendly or kept to themselves which I appreciate.

Started out as a server, but you'd get shifted around to whatever needed doing. First year, you'd do pretty much anything and everything except for frying for safety reasons.

Customers were good. Got annoyed if I was slow but can't blame them. Freezing cold, waiting for a snack. We were always busy. Line stretched halfway across the canal. Occasionally got big orders. I think the biggest order we got was 20 items tall. Hockey team came through. Wasn't mine to deal with, only heard about it.

We were situated in a shack on the river so it was freezing all the time. We were given (paid for) "sweaters" which were really hoodies. They were so thin and barely did anything. Did protect our arms from the food so they wouldn't get sticky. Best place to work in the shack was next to the oven where we warmed up dough for stretching and frying.

You got complimentary drinks and discounted everything else. Uniform was the aforementioned hoodie, an apron, and a toque which you all get to keep.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The best part of working for beavertails was the tips. You work hard but the tips pay off

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part of the job was the schedule. It may be different for you but with working there I would ask them if I could take time off the would get back to me saying I can then I would still be put on the schedules on that time I’d taken off and they would say it’s my responsibility to be there to cover the shift. That was very stressful!!

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment was very positive with my team members but every once in a while I would get a angry customer talking about the price they payed.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
You get their and you sign in and get right to work after your uniform is put on then you pretty much fry beavertails, beaverdogs, fries, etc  and restock around the kitchen and you might also be on cash or be cleaning dishes or cleaning windows or tables.

Before going to work I'd have to dress up in many layers to keep warm. The booth is small and filled with the servers so it's hard to move around. I learned how to work fast and efficiently. We'd get really long lines so we'd have to juggle taking one customer's order and another's. Our managers would change every weekend and they were all very friendly and willing to help if it was needed. The hardest part of the job is getting around the booth because it's just very small and crowded. The most enjoyable part of the job is that despite being squished the co-workers are very nice and fun so we all still have a great time and I do enjoy the hectic environment. I learned how to work fast and efficiently.

The job itself is easy and fun, although it’s really fast-paced and borderline stressful depending on the location. My coworkers are great and I’m always laughing while I’m there.

However, management at the location where I worked is insensitive in terms of scheduling and considering employees’ requests and problems. Also, all shifts are minimum 8 hours except for closing shifts (4 1/2 to 5 hours). 

Because of the store’s hours, you will be getting off work sometime between 8pm-12am depending on the type of shift you have. This can be really inconvenient in terms of having a life outside of work. 

Beavertail's was a great place to gain skills in just about everything. As a new hire, you are trained for every station, Serving, Cooking, Preparing. 
We encouraged fun at the workplace, even though sometimes at minus 30 degree weather we would all rather be warm at home. 

As a shift manager, under the direct supervision of the Franchise owners, I supervised up to 30 staff members per shift, and completed daily financial reports.

I have also helped review resumes for new winter seasons and conduct phone interviews.

Working with Beavertails I learned how to manage my time efficiently and developed better communication skills while taking orders from the customer's. At times when the lineups would get a little overwhelming is was difficult but it helped me to learn how to work better under pressure. The hardest part of the job was standing in the cold for long periods at a time but the benefits where meeting new people. I realy enjoyed how organized the managmnet.

Days were long in busy tourist seasons, boring otherwise. Far too hot in the summer and cold in the winter (depending on location - specific to ski and winter activity areas). Booths were small so the customer to employee ratio was off, resulting in long waits and rude customers at particularly busy times. Management was average.

A typical day at work would constitue of getting everything ready for the day (sauces, spices, drinks, dough, etc..). After all of that is done, you would start to serve customers. It can get quite stressful at times with the amount of customers we get but we always find a way to manage it and adapt to the situation. We get breaks here and there and when the day is over, we start to clean our stations and preparing for the next work day. Overall, it was very fun and i learned a lot.

Working at Beavertails was a fun and fast-paced experience. The team was supportive, and the environment was energetic, especially during busy hours. I gained valuable customer service skills, ensuring guests received their orders quickly and with a smile. Keeping the workspace clean and stocked was a priority, and teamwork made every shift enjoyable. It was a great experience that helped me build confidence and adaptability in a fast-paced setting!
