Better Living Health and Community Services

Better Living has been a great place to learn and grow as someone looking to enter the non-profit space. There are always opportunities to take on new challenges and build your skills, especially if you take the initiative. I took advantage of this a lot as it proves great for resume building. 

Even with a high flow of new team members (seasonal staff, students, and volunteers, etc) the organization keeps a good balance between welcoming fresh ideas and continuing established practices. I find that they are very willing to accept new ideas and listen with open ears.

One thing I’ve really appreciated is how supportive the environment is. People are open to sharing their knowledge, and there’s a real sense of collaboration across teams. In my first month of working here, I was met by some great managers that were very willing to sit with me for an hour and discuss everything they know about their program areas. It’s a great place for someone starting out in their career or looking to gain meaningful experience in community services. I've also had some great opportunities to work DIRECTLY with senior leadership teams (like SVP, and President & CEO) which is often difficult in bigger organizations. 

Definitely worth while to apply if you're willing to take on that extra work... trust me it is well wroth it in the end. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Working with seniors are very rewarding and they need lots of support. I enjoyed working with seniors and support them in the best way possible to make sure they stay independent .

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
They are always short of staff. The company doesn’t hire enough staff therefore the available staff has to work more than one job and cover too many responsibilities without any compensation. The company doesn’t even recognize your efforts and hard work.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Unfortunately, the management doesn’t recognize your hard work and dedication. The staff goes above and beyond their responsibilities to run the organization but the manager in response says: it is what it is ! Which is very sad. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
As soon as you arrive, you have to expect to do more than your responsibilities. They always juggle you around to cover up different departments. While the management always work from home!

The staff are helpful.  They are patient and took the time to explain the procedure to clients and volunteers. I had a positive experience there, 

The team at Better Living Health and Community Services is professional, and quick on the job. I would happily recommend their services. It is a great choice for clients. I have been working with them for years and have had nothing but positive results. The team is always happy to answer any questions and is always just a quick call away.


Working with the clients was very rewarding and satisfying but unfortunately management takes advantage of the caring personalities of their staff by under paying them and providing substandard benefits. They prefer to hire immigrants who'll work for less and be afraid to speak up about improvements. 
What I learned was no matter how much you want to do your best and help people, being taking advantage of and disrespected is not worth it. Most of the staff was very friendly and nice but management makes Better Living a toxic working environment.

Clients and supervisior are helpful.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Lot's of travel and you won't get paid for travelling. You will spend minimum 1.5 hours travelling

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Good and friendly but no benefit for employees

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Normal we start early in morning and complete it till evening

Activities are usually centered on the seasons. 
I have learnt to work in a fast paced environment and most important get Canadian work experience. 
I have learnt to prioritize and organised meetings and training. 
The workplace culture is more of respect, teamwork and the goal is to make sure the clients are in no doubt satisfied and catered to. 
The challenges in the workplace were manageable I had a good supervisor.
I enjoyed the volunteers appreciation week and lunch.

During my time there, management tended to be authoritarian. Only one manager (Social Work) was respectful and collaborative but they fired him; they did not hire a replacement so obviously we're not serious about changes (Social Worker had great ideas and we were excited!. 

Upper management is very cliquey and when you choose not engage in their gossip they shun you. Company culture is exhausting as everyone needs to be a workohilic or you're seen as underperforming, even in a pandemic. Things seem great at first but the longer you work there you'll notice how toxic the environment actually is.

With NO management support and no teamwork or care from management, this was a difficult place to work. The clinical (actually working on the floor) staff were great. The DOC and upper management were not. When I was fired with no just cause (and they said so) the HR person smirked and or smiled through the entire process.

Start work, work and work not only until the end of the day but beyond it before you could really able to leave. Different duties were added to share the work of the senior management as they are so lazy, “delegate” is the culture in the organization.
