What is the best part of working at the company?
I have been working with this company since May 2024, and it has been a great experience from day one. The office team treats drivers with respect, and the dispatchers are fair, professional, and easy to communicate with. I really appreciate that management is always open to talking and quick to help solve any problems. The trucks are modern, comfortable, and always kept in top condition, with repairs done promptly—usually at official dealers. I’m very happy with the pay, the miles, and the overall atmosphere. It’s a company where you feel valued and supported.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
For me, the job itself is not very stressful because the dispatchers plan routes well and communicate clearly. Like in any trucking job, there can be occasional delays due to weather, traffic, or waiting times at shippers and receivers, but the company does its best to minimize these situations and support drivers when they happen.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment is professional, friendly, and supportive. The office staff and dispatchers treat drivers with respect and are always ready to help. Management is approachable, and communication is open, which makes it easy to solve any issues quickly. There’s a strong sense of teamwork, and you feel that the company values and supports its drivers.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day starts with clear trip assignments from dispatch, with all the details well organized. Most of the time, routes are planned efficiently, which helps to avoid unnecessary waiting and keeps the miles consistent. Communication with dispatch is smooth throughout the day, and if any issues come up on the road, they are quick to assist. At the end of the day, you feel that your time and effort are valued.

The company has been in business forever, I've been here for 6 years and the first few were very interesting from a power struggle to  major inappropriate behaviour by the VP's who were running the business to bullying by long term employees who ran the companies social events.

In the last couple years however this place has done a complete 180 turnaround. Transparency you can tell is super important so everyone is on the same page. The fleet has really improved professionally as well, and there is a noticeable bond between the fleet drivers and dispatch. Accountability has been brought aboard, but in the right sense that allows freedom of opinion without negative repercussion.  We are encouraged to bring our ideas to our huddle board and write them down on the board and in turn they are implemented by teams that consists of every level of employee. 

Best - Working with coworkers who now care and take pride. I actually want to go to work!

Worst- Positive change continuous work in progress after last regime left place is tatters but mgmt seems very committed to undoing those wrongs from the past

Poor management , people in the office are constantly changing and covering each other’s shift when on leave so you’ll end up talking with someone different every week or so. Lots of dead head miles up to a 1000 miles for a low rate paying load. If you refuse it you end up sitting forever. Rate is 82% Of gross but they often lie on the phone about the real gross rate for a given load and you’ll find out the hard way when pay period remittance is issued to you. They’ll keep you away from your  home terminal area on purpose just to prevent you from stopping home for a couple of days. I was gone months . No safety when tarping you’re on your own. They preach safety but they don’t care. They’ll ask you to tarp when there’s no need to , you won’t get paid for it as owner ops. Big Freight SYS is not the family company it was . It’s owned by Daseke US ( crippled in debt and struggling in the US stock market. ) there are much better companies out there for owner ops. Big Freight is probably very good for company drivers but for owner ops expect to be taken advantage of in every aspect . 

dispatchers and other office staff can let you sit anywhere from a day to a week before getting a load. some get really annoyed with you when you call to check in or ask questions a few dispatchers also drive which to me doesnt seem fair...... the dispatchers can get two roles while drivers and owner ops are sitting waiting for loads and ive never seen a driver in both roles (looks fishy if im being honest) trucks and trailers are maintained and safety is for sure top priority with them both with you and the load and the equipment you are the captain of your truck you make the rules when it comes to safe driving so thats nice at least pay is within averages ive seen nation wide benefits are good for company drivers. driver to driver interaction is pretty solid office communications seems to be lacking.  good work home balance most times. for many reasons i left to another driving role elsewhere.

Management and dispatch is very respectful and understanding of the conditions of the job. There no toxic workplace culture and they are generally lenient about time off requirements and driver accommodations

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Communication was horrendous. Dispatch took hours to respond to messages and phone calls almost always went straight to voicemail. They also don’t have a proper 24 hour dispatch which is laughable given that they are a TFI company

Generally very respectful and tightknit. Management is generally understanding of the conditions of the job and will never push the drivers to do anything unsafe or illegal

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Wake up, pre trip the truck, maybe unload equipment if i am parked at a delivery location, drive to the next delivery, rinse and repeat

I have been working for Big Freight Systems for 1.5 years. I feel that I have a lot of guidance and support when I need it, but am also trusted to work independently. 

There are a lot of good bonuses and incentives to work here, barbecues, lunches, golf tournaments, nice Christmas parties etc. The staff is friendly and the communication is good as long as employees do not have too much work-load on their plates. 

The staff within the office is always actively meeting and making initiatives to make this a better employer for both the professional drivers as well as the team within the office. It is always a work in progress, but I do feel that as a whole, if there are any issues, they are worked to be resolved with proper communication.  They also do a good job to promote from within, and are flexible with life changes that drivers face and try to accommodate as best as they can. 

I recommend the company, as  I do not see many downfalls to working here.

An easy going company to work for, with some very nice ( if you like automatic ) trucks & getting some even better trucks in the near future, but hard to make a living.

Paid on a millage basis with a $20 flat rate fee for drops may work O.K. in the wide open prairies, but is no good on the west coast with two border crossings a day factored in.  When calculated I averaged less than $15 an hour based on mileage pay running the busy I-5 to Tacoma.

I would suggest that all work west of Chilliwack, B.C.anything on Vancouver Island & anything down I-5 as far as Portland, Oregon needs to paid on an hourly basis, as it is heavy traffic all the way.  Most companies than run these areas do pay hourly.  As I said the millage rate works in the prairies, but not on the west coast.

Also the flat rate of $20 per drop makes no sense, as I would get $20 to unload one Polaris ATV which takes about half an hour & still only get the same $20 flat rate to unload six or seven ATV's which can take about two hours.

This is my nightmare I met in my life. Confused management, low efficiency and deduct money etc. can make a driver exhausted on checking the pay all the time.

The working environment and culture are like a heavy machine which cannot move smoothly.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I spent half one day to take a trailer because I was designed two trailers by manager's fault before the third trailer and long time wasted.  No compensate for their fault.

20 years of trucking and this was by far the worst I've ever driven for. I was offered a scheduled run from Alberta to Tacoma WA Monday to Friday. Well that never happened the first week they had me running flatbeds around Alberta then tried to make me run a load to Oregon on a Friday knowing they could not get me a reload till the following Monday. Needless to say that was enough for me to see what they were like!. Bunch of no good liars.

The turnover in the office and on the fleet in the last 2 years has to be unmatched in the industry. Not something to be proud of. I have worked twice for BFS, the first time was bad but I had heard they really turned around the company after entire new leadership was brought in a few years ago.  All those people are gone within a couple years. I fleet managed and there was a lot of favoritism to drivers who brought "goodies" for the planner and it was well known. It didn't change when I came back and the shop and ops leader were already gone. I lasted under a year this time
