I was in my 4th year of my BScN and my colleagues and I were looking at where we may find future positions as RNs in the world of nursing.  A couple of my friends were hearing about this place in Northern Ontario called Kirkland Lake.  I had never heard of this place before never mind where it was on the map.  They were offering such a great opportunity to work in a rural hospital and gain a full spectrum of experiences from med/surg, OR, ER, ICU etc which sounded perfect for me as I had no idea what direction to go in and there are so many paths for a nurse to specialize in.  

After doing some research around the community and hospital I decided to inquire myself about an opportunity here at Blanche River Health.  From the first time I called, to my over the phone interview, followed by an in person visit to the hospital there were so many bright faces and they were just so happy to meet you and get to know you.  This was such a warm welcome that made me feel like a person not just a number in the health care system and I noticed they treated the patients with the same care and attention.  As not being from this community, I didn’t know where to live or what was around the area but the staff here including managers stepped up and supported my big move from a big city near Toronto.  They even toured apartments for me and guided me to my first apartment which made the transition much smoother and less stressful.  Talk about a small town feeling of warmth and comfort.

Right away the staff took me in and showed me the ropes of the hospital, they are like a big family here and work together to support each other and their patients.  It was amazing to be part of this incredible team and we had so many good times as well as sad and hard times like any medical profession but sticking together made it easier for us all.  It is the people that are here that make this place a gem to work for and be a patient at.  Each staff member takes the time to be there for the community as the human connection is needed in times of trauma, stress and worry.  They go above and beyond to make you feel safe and not alone and the connections that you make are everlasting.  It didn’t take long to become part of the community here.  

I signed a contract as a fulltime RN for the Med/surg unit.  After that, I branched into ICU/ER departments and then a fulltime ER nurse.  

Another life change happened in Kirkland Lake for me, I met my future husband while carrying on a casual conversation about where we were from and what made us come to this little town.  We are now married with kids who are growing like weeds in this small but big hearted town and have no intensions of ever leaving.   

After 12 years in the community, I can’t be more proud and humbled to be part of this amazing team that will continue to strive for the best patient care possible.    I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else in my career.


Blanche River Health is an amazing place to work!  All staff are friendly and welcoming of new hires!  The orientation process is simple and very informative!  Members of the management team and the CEO take time to speak with new hires on their first day and promote an open door policy.  The level of recognition and appreciation for staff at BRH is like none other!  A great small and rural Hospital experience for anyone who loves the great outdoors. 

I joined Blanche River Health four months ago, and I am so glad I did. I find it very rewarding to work with a group of professionals who truly care about the work they do, delivering quality care to the local community.  This is my second time working for the hospital.  When I was in high school, I worked in the Dietary department and absolutely love it.  I only left to pursue my post-secondary studies in Toronto, but would have otherwise stayed in my role.  

I have been working at BRH for a couple years now, and I can say that it is the best job that I have ever had. I plan to retire with BRH. I love working here. There are so many opportunities to learn.
Also, as someone who has had to use their services, I can say that it is a very good experience. Great staff, and a clean, friendly, supportive environment. 
I am proud to say that I work here and recommend this hospital to anyone looking to work in the medical field. There are great opportunities.

This hospital goes above and beyond to recruit staff. At the time of my employment there were significant staffing challenges and I started out with no work life balance. 
Within a year they recruited agency MLTs to help which was amazing. 
I very much felt like an important part of the team, and found the lab staff welcoming and fun. 

Blanche River Health is an amazing place to work and always trying to improve processes and procedures.  

The environment is very helpful and positive, which is great for new people coming into the organization!  

PLENTY of activities to participate in as well within the Kirkland Lake & Englehart communities!

All new managers with no support, will discipline all matters regardless of the defence. The hospital has eager staff members but are most often left disappointed with the lack of positivity after successful outcomes. 

I worked Full Time at Blanche River Health until retirement.  It's a great place to work and I jumped at the opportunity to go back part time when something opened up.  They're a great bunch of people to work for/with, right from the top down!

Loved working here one of the best jobs I’ve had. Would go back in a heart beat very nice staff friendly environment. Great communication with the boss.
