Blyth Academy

I would arrive an hour before the school opened and got prepared for the day. Reviewed my 'to-do' list that I created the day prior and prioritized my day accordingly. I answered phone calls, emails and staff/student questions throughout the day as well as keeping up with hourly tasks.
Blyth helped me learn how to create a variety of different emails, memos, notices, newsletters, and several other documents that will help me in future jobs.
This position required a lot of interaction with a variety of different people and I would have to say that that was my favorite part of this job. My least favorite was the lack of communication between the Head of School and all other staff members including myself. This really hindered the schools productivity and at busier times of the year, it would cause a lot of unnecessary stress on the teachers and myself.
Blyth gave me the opportunity to show off all the skills I had obtained in my previous jobs in the service industry, to a more structured business environment.

Worked with some great teachers who supported each other.  Flexibility with private and semi-private studies and small class size with 4-12 students.  Do not teach more than 1 -2 subjects as the work hours is from 8.45 - 4 pm. Be prepared to photocopy everything. An unnecessary amount (and request) of paperwork, which have been known to create a lot of stress, and less personal time, if it is the first time you are teaching the subject. You will learn a lot  about preparation while working here.  In some cases, be prepared not to get re-hired if a parent complains about you--as this school is all about its image and little or no teacher support when parents complain!  No loyalty when it comes to re-hiring some teachers, even if they are excellent teachers!  A great experience for references though!

Blyth academy is probably the worst ran school / business ever. They are a school that only cares about enrolments and is looking to hire cheap labour . If you are an experienced teacher who values your career or ethics in teaching please avoid this school. The management of the school is ran poorly , they are unclear on how to run a school and switch models way to often only catering to rich families. Most of their facilities are old and outdated. They look to hire recent graduates out of teachers college ( that’s even if you have an oct) your job security is shaky . Benefits are the worst I’ve ever come across in Canada. Cool people but not a place you can take seriously.

The school is small but highly efficient, with a strong culture of collaboration and continuous improvement. Management is genuinely supportive, empowering teachers with full curriculum autonomy and the freedom to innovate in the classroom. The environment encourages initiative, creativity, and accountability, resulting in excellent student performance and a positive workplace dynamic. The only drawback is that compensation remains below the market rate, which doesn’t fully reflect the level of responsibility and impact associated with the role.

Work with unrealistic demands and workloads, with insufficient space to execute classes effectively e.g. gym, music, drama..

I taught at one of their schools for a semester in the summer. Expectations from management were low, and easy to meet. My class had seven students and only one was problematic. I didn't think I was being paid enough to "work away my summer". I take pride in my work and this helped classes go smoothly, but I got the sense that other teachers there were phoning it in as a paycheque ... this made me slightly resentful.

Blyth is a wonderful organization. It is a private school that is very versatile and meets many needs for various students. Many students attend part-time for course credits, summer courses or off season learning. Teachers are well trained and very helpful. The small group learning environment is ideal for personalized education.

I absolutely regret leaving that job place but for personal reasons, which I could not share, I had to leave the place. It was a real pleasure working with staff and students at that school and especially the principal was very understanding and accommodating. My circumstances were as such that I had to leave immediately, but not because I did not like the school. Indeed that was one of the best environment I ever worked.

Teaching small classes and having autonomy over your work is great. Head office is disconnected from their schools. Salaries do not allow for comfortable living. No clear salary grid or path for growth within the schools/company.
