Body Energy Club

I worked for Body Energy Club for almost 2 years, across different seniority and they are without doubt one of the dodgiest, most greedy, selfish companies I have ever worked for. They treated me horrendously, and others too (the stories I would tell family and friends would disgust them). Staff were very under paid, the company would never support or look after the welfare of staff, for example if there was ever an abusive customer, they would side with the customer over the staff member, because they had the money. The toxicity comes down from the CEO to area management, HR and district management, which would induce a poisonous, two-faced, 'big brother is watching you' feel in the stores. They never granted pay raises, vacation requests or promotions and constantly lied to you. They would cheat over anyone to get the upper hand on sales or finances. They would work you until you were exhausted and promise you opportunities and lead you on, by making you do favors for them they couldn't get others to do (as those people had worked out their tricks). They also always under-tax, which would always mess up your tax returns.
If your background is in nutrition or fitness do not work for Body Energy! They will NOT support your career and will use you as a retail pawn only so they can make money. When I was there, they were secretly removing the few perks workers had! Luckily I got out when I did.

The coworkers are very nice people, but the company is horrribly structured for how small it is. Very complicated management structure and lack of cohesive vision and strategy. Each store operates differently and the company as a whole suffers extensively due to it. Extremely high turnover. Everything from the in-house supply chain to store management is a mess and in-store policies change weekly. 

They expect far too much out of the minimum wage employees for absolutely no gain or benefit to those employees. I was blessed to be "higher paid" within the company (still extremly low for Vancouver standards) and felt absolutely heartbroken seeing how close management would push the minimum wage staff (smoothie bar, sales floor) to their breaking points each and every day. 

When I refused to follow upper management's directions to be even harder on the minimum wage staff I faced sudden consequences including drawbacks of my attendance and sales bonuses. 

Area and district managers will lie directly to your face in regards to any question or concern brought forth. Once you provide them with evidence to back up your concerns (workplace safety, mental health, aggressive and entitled customers, verbally and physically abusive customers) and highlight how they have lied -  you will be reprimanded. "The customer is always right." 

 

Spent over a year working at Body Energy Club, made some good friends and gained good retail experience while covering at multiple stores. My overall experience with them started from excellent to just downright terrible. 

Upper management appear nice and friendly, but all they care about is how to save money. I recall training multiple new people that were getting $16/hr while I was getting less - it went on for over 4 months until I brought up the situation to the area manager, which then he raised me to the same wage. 

They don’t value their employees, and treat everyone like they’re replaceable. It doesn’t matter how much hard work you put in on the daily, they won’t listen to whatever concern you have and they’ll watch you walk away while they keep the people who slack off the most employed. I was a flexible employee, and there were times where I had to cover floor shifts but they wouldn’t add me in the system as a sales rep, meaning I never got any commission for the products I helped sold while being the lowest paid in the store. 

The store managers I’ve worked with were amazing, and I still keep in touch with most of my coworkers. However most of the floor staff either act like they’re better than you or have no respect for personal boundaries. I’m sure the CEO’s a great guy, but please, hire better people to run your stores. 

I have been working at Body Energy Club for 3 years and I can honestly say that it has been an amazing experience. From day one, the management and team members have made me feel welcome and valued.

The work environment is positive, supportive, and collaborative. Everyone works together as a team to provide exceptional customer service and make sure that the store is running smoothly. The management team is approachable and always willing to listen to suggestions and feedback.

One thing that stands out about working at Body Energy Club is the emphasis on personal and professional growth. The company provides ongoing training and development opportunities for employees to enhance their skills and knowledge in the health and wellness industry.

Another great thing about working at Body Energy Club is the culture of wellness and sustainability. The company is committed to promoting health and wellness in the community, and also prioritizes sustainability by using eco-friendly practices and sourcing products from ethical suppliers.

Overall, I highly recommend working at Body Energy Club. It's a great place to work for those who are passionate about health and wellness, enjoy working in a collaborative environment, and want to grow both personally and professionally.

I worked at Body Energy Club for a while, and the staff was genuinely the best part of the job. Everyone I worked with was friendly, supportive, and created a positive environment on the floor.

However, the management side could use a lot of improvement. Phone calls can come at any hour—5 AM, 11 PM, it doesn’t matter—and you often wake up to work-related calls even if you’re not in a higher position. Vacation or time-off requests submitted well in advance (even 90+ days) are rarely approved, and weekly schedules are usually posted only about a week before, which makes planning difficult.

There is also a strong sense of micromanagement. Cameras are checked to monitor whether employees are actively working, which can feel uncomfortable and takes away trust.

That said, the day-to-day job itself is enjoyable if you can overlook the micromanagement and inconsistent work-life balance. The team is great, and the atmosphere can be fun, but the management practices make it challenging long-term.

I have been at BEC for almost a year. I enjoy working at BEC because I like and respect my manager and all my co-workers. However, the management policies from the corporate office is making it difficult for all of us to enjoy our jobs most of the time. There is almost no training given to employees when they start. There are no manuals that have the roles and their responsibilities written down. The micromanagement from the head office makes even the managers frustrated. No matter how much my manager wants to help, at some point it’s out of his/her hands. The salaries are low compared to the amount of work and stress we go through. There is extremely high turnover of employees. Overall, the company policies make the work environment feel a bit unstable. I like how active and happy we can be at times, but that does not happen very often. A fast paced environment would be bearable, but only if proper support and training is given. Unfortunaley that has not been the case. A lack of proper management can and will discourage the most self motivated individual, sooner or later. Again, I am not talking about my manager at our store, but overall management polocies of Body Energy Club.

The company is micromanaged down to the smallest detail. Upper management, who work off-site, watch live feeds of the store cameras all day in hopes of catching the smallest infractions. Company does not trust its staff. 

The promoted "open-door" policy upon hiring is not honored. Taking initiative and problem solving on your own is met with extreme hostility from above. Staff are afraid to voice concerns to upper management. 

The company changes policies for retail staff nearly every week without any prior consultation with the affected staff, leading to extremely high levels of stress and frustration. Every task you complete must be logged on a tracking sheet and documented with photos. 

The company is truly lucky to have some of its exceptionally talented and intelligent retail staff. Especially those who have been there long-term. Unfortunately, the company does not value or show appreciation to those people. 

Stressed workplace with toxic management who pushes us to even do more. No performance review on time. Managers recommended their friends/family for promotions. No clear overview of what we should aim for and pay raise - store manager and upper management never make it happen.  Criticism is poured up on always and it’s not even constructive criticism. Most working are immigrants, management make use of that pay low as much as they can. Coworkers if new are easy to get along. If they have there for long expect rude behaviour, and managers shuts theirs eyes even if they see that. Perks- discounts on supplements, dental benefits, massage, physiotherapy, tips.  Not a place to wok if you care about mental health and schedules are INSANE some managers change to their own need and they always get a steady schedule while others get opening/closing/mid shift with POOR sleep.

In the beginning.... sounds good! Work hard, learn and advance - but shortly you realize that:
- hard work = no recognition
- inadequate staffing = no time for training
- inadequate staffing = stressful environment
- expect to work overtime without pay - daily
- expect to get into trouble for working overtime
- poorly trained staff = constant criticism from manager
- poorly trained managers leave their unfinished work for others to complete 
- 1 negative comment from customer will cancel out 50 positive comments
- desperate need to constantly hire -huge attrition rate
- support weak, malleable managers = good staff quit
- many good managers self -demote due to unfair practices
- "open door Policy"= not true, real concerns dismissed as being negative
- customers are allowed to hassle staff = disregard for in-store harassments policy
- management will respond to this with heartfelt regret and ask for more info - its all a pretentious front

I had the privilege of working with the management team at Body Energy Club for over three years, and it was truly an exceptional experience. The senior management consistently goes above and beyond to support team members in the stores, creating a positive and encouraging work environment.
