Border paving pays well once you work up the chain a little. They are terrible at Training new worker and quick to fire people. Lots of the long term employees have terrible attitude towards the  company and make it hard to enjoy your work day. Management definitely plays favorites and the human resources department is almost nonexistent. A lot of there managers mock and make fun of workers behind people's back and has a very high school atmosphere to if. I agree with one of the other reviews that this company is stuck in the 80s is that is unfortunate because they have  a lot of good people but are losing them quickly. They use the seasonal work to get rid of any workers they don't want anymore by not rehire the next season to get out of paying severance.

Worked for BP for almost two years. As a green hand they let me run a lot of equipment. Everyone gossips. Equipment is all old except for one piece of equipment on each crew, this is not a standard thing, just how it seemed to work out. Pay is slightly higher than average if management likes you (if they don't, good luck getting a raise). Each person is expected to have way more responsibilities than they are being paid for. They have middle age men hired as water truck drivers pushing shovels more than the young girl labourers. Foremans play favorites a lot. I had to work there for 15 months before I received my prescription benefits card and other benefits

When I started their loved it,fun exciting place to work as time went on the Ole laundry surfaced,screaming yelling at employees, i had observed a clicky crew if you didn't fit in they did mean stuff to people to get rid of you!
Management knew of the problems and chose to do basically nothing,not all was bad there are alot of fireman's who work hard at work and don't mind taking the time to train you or show the ropes,upper management and some office staff need replacing to create a good culture,fair practice for all top to bottom.

Our day would start with a on site safety meeting coordinated by myself,then tasks would be organized from the foreman with my ideas considered. While I was at border I learned teamwork,how to work along side people to complete tasks and how to properly use my time. I found that upper management would rarely come on the jobsite but if they did and initiated a conversation they would be cordual. I found that any co workers that I worked along side were nice to me as long as I was nice to them. The hardest part of the job was working in the summer heat along side of the paver as it was laying the pavement. The most enjoyable part was knowing you put in a hard days work.

You would get a text the day before work if you had work or not, you didn’t really get any idea how long your shift each day was it varied from 6-14 hours. You did not get a lunch break basically we ate while driving site to site (I was a flagger) there would be days I would be stuck as the only flagger trying to work intersections. Myself and many other flaggers I knew got heatstroke from working long hours in the sun without breaks for water or food to go to the bathroom we had to get the attention of one of the labours and try and ask them to flag for us over all work life balance was non existent as we never knew when we’d have work or how many days a week we’d be working

If you get onto a good crew it is a good experience. Management wise it is not the best. Raises are very rare and when they do occur they are very small wage increases. Very long hours are the only reason for seeing a large paycheck with a moderate to low hourly wage. Management is not big on work life balance and tends to terminate positions based on personal liking or people and not based on job performance. For some positions , overtime is rounded down to the nearest dollar instead of exact wage of time and a half.

Family orientated  company, great bunch of people

Fast past environment, completing a years worth of work in 6 months

Like any job there’s always the good and the bad, Border Paving had lots of both 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Non stop 12 hour days 6 days a week for 6 months straight, if you like making money and work hard this is a great place for that

Most days were well organized and busy. Days flew by and you felt like you accomplished something good in the community. The management was great to work for. Met some good people there, some of whom became good friends. Lots of hours and a profit share program that you were eligible for upon entering your third year of employment. Many of the employees there have worked there for 20+ years. You have every long weekend off as well as a company picnic in July. Every fall, they have a huge company Christmas party for the adults and they throw a smaller one for those with children. They are truly a family based company.

These guys are great.  If you have a strong work ethic and some common sense, you will thrive while working here.  The hours are long during construction season, but you will have a better work/life balance during the winter - the perfect gig for someone who hunts or likes to ride their sled in the winter.  Everyone works hard to complete the job, but safety is at the forefront.  The pay is above average and you are respected as a worker and person.  The owner even pops in and hands out hats to the employees.


A typical day involves operating heavy equipment safely and efficiently. I learned grading, teamwork, and machinery handling. Management is supportive. Work culture is fast-paced and collaborative. The hardest part is long hours in tough conditions. Most enjoyable is seeing projects completed successfully
