Bosleys Pet Food Plus

I liked working at Bosley's but I'm not going to review it through rose coloured glasses. The pay is poor (typical retail minimum wage) though this company is awesome about raising the wage if the government is going to BEFORE the government does. There's no benefits like dental or whatnot but you do get the benefit of at least monthly meetings with Pet Food Company reps who feed you tasty stuff like pizza in return for you listening to them tell you why you should promote their food to your customers. Bosley's has strong values in regards to pet nutrition and welfare and regularly teams up with groups like the SPCA to fund raise or promote pet adoptions. Bosley's can be a really fun place to work! However, there's little opportunity for advancement and the expensive health care plan that goes along with full time work isn't worth it. Bosley's was recently bought by Albertan company Pet Valu, a company which is much more about pressing sales than family friendly Bosley's.

Okay, there is one benefit - employees get everything AT COST. You'd be surprised at how little an expensive bag of cat or dog food is actually worth in comparison to the mark up!

Bosley's is the best place that I have ever worked. I fondly remember the entire staff of my store, my customers, the reps, the SPCA cats who stayed with us until they were adopted and all the neighbourhood dogs that we met who came in for a cookie. 

The training process was non-existent after orientation day. It is mostly dependent on asking other employees, but the answers vary depending on who is asked. You are basically left with trial and error. Try to complete a task the best you can and if you make mistakes, you will hear about it in passive aggressive messages in the group chat. To make it worse, they will tell you its wrong and not tell you how to do it as if you are supposed to read their minds.

Unfortunately,  communication here is terrible despite their efforts. Decisions are made on the fly and only one or two people who are working that day  are told. There is hardley any task delegation but you will get yelled at if you're not doing what they want. There is also no positive reinforcement or appreciation for employees. Any criticism to management is not well received. 

The staff discount sounds nice at first but it still ends up being more expensive than buying at Costco.
The only good part of the job are the animals who come in. It is the only thing that keeps morale up around here.

So if you are shopping at Bosleys,  please save us and bring your pets in!


It was great when I first started, but now since I'm in school management is not flexible at all with shifts I get doubled scheduled when I'm supposed to be in school. I was hired for part-time but I work about 32 hours a week, management hires pretty much just friends and people they know, it causes a lot of drama, co-workers are lazy and half the time rely on you to do both your jobs. do not get the recognition you deserve, pushed to seel Bosley brands, if you don't meet targets then you are watched by management and pushed to do so, you do not make enough money for the job you have to do, staffing is kept super low so if anyone calls in sick you probably will be alone working, management talks bad about other workers and overscheduled you. I complained about my hours and was told that it's fine and that I wasn't working that much over any holidays unless you are management you will be working them, you have to close and then open the next day because technically there are 10 hours between the shifts but that doesn't include travel time or anything. But the discount is nice and you do get to see dogs all day.

The first few months of working here were great! Eventually after you're here for a bit managements real personality starts to show. They are money hungry. They don't care about their staff, just about promoting *treat of the month*and other sale numbers. You get paid minimum wage,and you are expected to know And do so much and to *bend over backwards for them* all while the manager sits in the back their whole shift *working on the schedule* if you do something incorrectly or miss a task,don't worry.....they will write it in their little notebooks that coworkers have to sign each day to say they acknowledge it. They also don't train you, just give you an online course to learn pet needs and other animal necessities.you get scrolled at by manager in front of customers too if you did a task incorrectly.. 

Don’t except to “climb the ladder” here.. there is very little advancement.. management will hire new people rather than promote within. 

Bullying constantly, no help from management.. or head office. 

Used to be a fun place to work.. now it’s a head ache.
Low pay.. but yet expect you to bend over backwards for benefit of the company.

Great pet training on simple pets (cats, dogs betta fish) 
Always out of stock of something in the store..

Pressured to sell “Pet Valu” Brands.. ie) jump, Bailey & Bella, Performatrin Excellence & Ultra, Essentials..

Repairs needing to fixed around the store take forever to be addressed..

Managers need to be watched by district managers... 
District managers ask your experienced.. full time staff what they think of their managers - make it anonymous as then we can put what we actually think without getting reprimanded.

I loved this job, Very Great staff very great Customers. Always a good day at Bosleys.

My only issue with this job was the fact i did so much work. Everyday i worked with the manager she would go do the Bank Deposit and then leave shortly after. Leaving me alone at work for 6 hours with no one to cover my shift and all of the stock and Extra work to do.
I felt i wasnt getting enough credit for all my hard efforts at this store and this is why i left. I wanted to move up in the company and felt i deserved it after all the Hard work i had put in but Nothing more came from that job but Constantly working my shifts alone not being able to take a break. I felt i was being taken advantage of and so i looked for a new job else where

What is the best part of working at the company?
Get to see cute dogs and get some knowloge about dog food    , and discount on products . 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The company is really pushing about get donation done for costumers.  Managers usually don’t want to be at the floor helping costumer or helping on truck days when you need to lift a lot of weight constantly . Also , they asked to do tasks that has to be done by 2 people at least and just one persone does it 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Good overall . You get to have good co workers 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Being on the floor by myself for more than 1 hr. Multitasking between helping costumer, arranged delivery,  answered phone calls .

If I could give ZERO stars, I WOULD!!!


If opening store:

Ensure all cans/bags of food are pulled forward and labels showing
Ensure small animal section is neat and tidy
Ensure all leashes, beds, toys are tidy and organized
Receive stock and put it away


During store hours:

Helped customers find food and other supplies for their pets
Was the only person made to refill and take care of very heavy bulk bin section in a very short amount of time
Maintained store cleanliness
Changed/up-kept displays
Put stock from back room out onto floor


If closing store:

Same as opening duties minus receiving stock


Non-daily duties:

Promote sales if there were any

Work with people helping to provide best food and items for health of pets. Lots of tasking just like any retail. Good DM and good store Manager. New stores are really nice while older stores quite shabby. Systems could be updated, takes too long to place orders, inventories every week, etc. My store has uwash and it's annoying listening to dogs barking and whining through day people want grooming for 10 bucks. You have to lift dog food bags and constantly stock store so no gaps. Lots of learning to do but really helpful to add to your personal knowledge.

When I worked there I was told I was being hired for an asst. Manager position and left my old job for it. I worked hard but the politics and gossip of management was appalling and they ended up deciding there wasn't going to be an asst. Manager anymore. They constantly changed my shifts without permission and treated me like a whipping boy slave. Said several sexist comments like "We dont hire men" and several more about the ladies who I worked with. This is typical of management who comes from money and has never had to really struggle a day in their lives. So my recommendation is dont work here unless you dont need to.
