Broil King

I started working at Broil King as a college student on their demo team and later did a co-op and got hired right out of college. My summers on the demo team were fun because it was mostly solo work and my time in the co-op was good because I was working from home, but when I started working on-site at BK my opinions of it as a company underwent some changes. 

I would preface the rest of my words here with the acknowledgment that there are some really great people that I met there who are still there to this day, but my review for my own time working there is a cautionary one. 

The main issue at BK in my estimation is a lack of coordination at all levels and across all teams within the company, coupled with the most legitimately horrible attitudes I've ever been around in my working life. There's constant tension and gossip between employees, confusion as to what ownership wants and how they plan to do it, and a noticeable lack of competency among many of the leaders. 

The culture at BK can be simply described as your average corporate nightmare where many of the people are constantly miserable, everyone is working for the weekend, and some people are all but counting the minutes until they can retire. People's efforts are vastly under-appreciated, benefits and pay are cheap and rarely increase, there are no performance reviews, and laying beneath all that is the foundational sense that you aren't really cared for or respected as an employee... you're just another cog in a very rusty and disjointed machine. That's the hardest part of working at BK because it very quickly begins to feel like a job that you're stuck in with no way up or out. Another element of this is that there was always a running joke that nobody gets fired at BK, so if utter incompetence is your thing it's a great place to hunker down and get paid every two weeks, but just know you'll pay for it by becoming pretty miserable pretty fast. 

My typical day was usually quite lack-lustre. My department was located in a part of the building with no windows or natural light, so the days that I was doing screen-based tasks all day could be quite gruelling if I didn't make an effort to leave my workspace every so often. It should be noted that there are MANY areas of the office that don't get any natural light throughout the day. Projects in my department would very often get started and either not get completed at all because the goalposts would move almost daily, or go through a slew of changes before they eventually scraped across the finish line. Instances like that are common and they lead to a lot of frustration, especially from management figures. The manager that I worked directly under for most of my time at BK fostered an attitude that the entire rest of the company was out to get us and we just had to do whatever we could to deliver for the owner, even if that meant going over people's heads and disrupting other processes. Collaboration isn't really a strength at BK to say the least.

This is already a novel of a review but it's been a long time coming so I'll button it up here. I think I truly did learn a lot of important lessons at BK that I'll carry with me through my career, but the unfortunate part about how the company is run and the way that many of the people there conduct themselves is that the lessons learned here are ones of what NOT to do, what NOT to be, and ultimately what I DON'T want in a workplace. These are valuable things to learn and I'm glad to have learned them and to be in a much better professional situation today, but I cannot overstate the fact that the year and a half I spent working in that office was truly the lowest and most spirit-crushing time of my life, and I know it was because of that job because since switching to my current workplace I've been on the up-and-up in literally every aspect of my life. Shoutout to my friends and the good people that do still work at Broil King, they're the only reason it was tolerable for as long as it was. I truly hope this helps someone make a more informed decision before applying here.




Broil King is good, relatively easy work. I typically referred to it as moderately paced tedium. Jobs were not overly complicated, repeated constantly and overall it was work that didn't require very much.

Employees were relatively friendly and it was a good environment overall however it felt like the management could have lead a little bit  more than they did and the discussing in another language while sometimes pointing at employees and mentioning their names was the cause of a few walk outs.

Most employees are from temp agencies. I worked here 3 years as a temp and did not get hired on as a full employee (which after learning what that meant I would have not accepted anyways), I continued working here because it was accessible by public transit and did not find anything else until I moved. Wages are extremely low even by factory standards (minimum wage), you get 25 cents more being hired on but benefits are co-paid so you are actually making less with deductions and benefits are horrible where you hardly get anything reimbursed which is crazy considering payroll deductions for benefits.

 

If you are a new temp worker you don't have to worry too much about what job you will get. For the most part its just assembly and putting grill parts in boxes. The coworkers are friendly and Management doesn't exactly leave you out to dry or on your own. They check up on everyone. For the most part you don't have to worry about scheduling, at leas ti never did, i just showed up everyday on time and never needed to wait around at home for a phone call to tell me to come in the next day.

It's sometimes busy and very long day when there is a lot of work or supplier in the plant which needed to be process for shipment we assembled, packaging, loading/unloading product in the boxes and it's sometimes stressful when only few people shown up for the day. and I also learn so much about working with different people from different background as they usually perform a past pace work clean environment at Broil king. the most enjoyable part in this job, is that you are giving a lot of time to work individually or independently, if needed.

Fast pace assembly, worked with hand tools, pallet jacks and air tools. Management did not tolerate abuse and poor communication skills. All workers were encouraged to communicate in English to ensure safety. Plant was warm. People are warm and friendly. Emphasis on safety was impressive.

On a typical day at work you will have to work fast in the heat. You will learn how to assemble parts and pieces together, you will learn how to co-operate with others. Management is alright not really the best. Some co-workers are nice and some are just the opposite of nice. The hardest part of this job is to go back and forth trying to keep up with the other people. the most enjoyable part of the job is meeting new people and skills.

It's not particularly difficult or easy, but I do like that the work is constantly moving. I can keep my hands busy, making time move at a fair pace. My coworkers are mostly pleasant people. The hardest part of the job is using the power tools with parts that are small and easy to break. The most enjoyable part of work is that we get to socialize, given we aren't slowing down.

would come in and right away begin work and be placed in any position that needed to be filled or if someone needed to be replaced which happened very frequently in all honesty which was great being able to learn and attain more in a short period of time

Your just a body there working 2 or 3 jobs but only getting 14 an hr line leaders don't speak much english not a very pleasant place to work and if they want to hire you on full time they will pay you .25 cents more
