I had the pleasure of working at Bruyere and found it to be a highly supportive workplace with a clear mission-driven approach. The company culture fosters a strong sense of community and commitment to its goals, making it an inspiring place to work.

One of the standout aspects of Bruyere is the investment in employee growth and development. For those who are driven and eager to advance their careers, there are numerous opportunities to learn and evolve. The people are wonderful, creating a collaborative and positive environment.

However, there were occasional challenges related to clarity in work assignments and the company's short and long-term visions. At times, it was difficult to understand how to execute tasks that aligned with these overarching goals. This lack of focus could sometimes lead to confusion and hinder productivity.

Overall, Bruyere is a great place for those who value a supportive community and are motivated to grow. While there is room for improvement in terms of strategic focus and clarity, the potential for personal and professional development is significant.

I can’t speak for all the departments as they all have different management. However, for the cafeteria, those who deliver the food carts to the residents and make their plates, the cooks, basically anything related to the main kitchen of the building and more precisely at the St. Louis Residence location. It doesn’t matter how hard you work there, the number of hours (overtime) you put in or how many consecutive days you work and I mean literally over 30 consecutive days. There’s 0 appreciation! Management/supervisors weren’t good at all and so fake. They would gossip endlessly with each other and many times with staff members about other staff members. Only a couple of temporary supervisors were actually pretty cool to work with but the main ones, not even close. Many of the employees always complained about how things were run there. Most of the white people also got away with more things than the other “non white”. There’s seriously so much to say about this department at this location but hopefully this is enough to make people think before applying there. I haven’t worked there in over 3 years so hopefully management has changed because it’s the only way that it might become a better work environment. 

Even if you applied for a full-time job (on the same floor same unit as indicated on your job offer) they move you to another unit at the last minute ALL THE TIME. Bruyere does not respect your contract. 
Your experience won't be safe for patients and you, because going to places you don't know is stressful.
Colleagues with seniority won't help you to get info in general BUT those same people will prefer to report you on things you are not even aware of doing... So you get blamed, frustrated and lose confidence. 
There is absolutely NO SUPPORT from management nor staffing while you alert them about critical situations like understaffed situations, meals not given to patients... 
Finally, this is the only place I know in my entire career as a nurse where you do EVERYTHING with patients: wash them from A to Z because NO PCA making our days harder and risky for patients, difficult assignments interactions with the staff, admissions...and trash too. For the same salary rate, you can have much better somewhere else. 
I highly don't recommend this place to anyone, except if you want to lose your CNO's certification.

If you are not a nurse or a manager, do not expect to get anywhere within the organization. There are no opportunities for advancement for allied health professionals. Vacation approval process is terrible (quota of 1 staff per discipline off at a time per site) unless you have an administrative position. Low vacation quota makes it difficult for casuals to have enough hours to stay at Bruyere which leads to constant casual turnover. If you are applying to a casual position, be sure to have a backup position elsewhere.

There have recently been major changes to reporting structure which make it more difficult to have employee concerns heard at the senior leadership level. All managers and directors with very few exceptions have nursing backgrounds therefore allied health concerns are not taken seriously. Many departments have been affected by recent cuts which leads to great workloads. Overtime hours are not approved for pay but you are expected to get the work done.

Bruyere continuing care is a terrific place for new nurses to get some confidence handling difficult caseloads. The skills you utilize are chronic in nature (trachs, gastro tubes, wounds, dialysis, etc). Most of the staff are older RPNs who were grandfathered into the new facility when it stopped being a nursing home. Teamwork is not very strong; there are few PSWs to assist with care duties (which is heavy in nature as most patients are totally dependent); there are 2 or 3 managers who manage their unit well; managers nor educators are required to have more than BScN education (usually this requires masters); 8 hour shifts are easier to do than 12s, however you work more days in a week which can be draining. Ultimately the establishment is not one to boast a positive reputation. It is a great place for new nurses to quickly obtain full-time positions, but I don't recommend it long term.

My absolute favourite thing about working at Bruyere is how close the entire team is. From nursing staff, to administrators, to RT’s, PT’s, OT’s, environmental services staff, kitchen staff, security staff and even the patients. It’s just one big family! You can always expect a big smile (even through the masks) and a giant hello walking down the halls from anyone you pass. And as for being a nurse here - I love it! There’s always support on the units and I’m never afraid to ask for help. My manager is one of the best in the business, and is extremely supportive. Yes, it’s heavy nursing work, there are not many PSW’s in the building, but I actually enjoy this. Also, doing care is a crucial part of our head to toe assessments, and sometimes I think nurses forget that. So I don’t mind it at all, let’s me get a good skin check in and keeps me busy throughout my shift. :) 

This job is gratifying due to the patients but the staff and management can be a whole clusterf***.  While this job definitely enhances your skill of managing a high-paced environment and working collaboratively. Upper management is so disorganized and it really affects the whole team . The energy on the units can be quite intimidating aswell due to young vs middle-aged people’s way of doing things . There’s definitely cases of favoritism in the organization so you better hope you don’t bug off the wrong person or it’ll become strenuous very quickly. The parking situation is so hectic , bylaws are just waiting there in the daytime to fine hardworking healthcare workers. There’s a waitlist that is extremely long , kinda sad that they can’t accomodate their staff

Bruyère Continuing Care is  one  of the best company in  Ottawa  in educating the staff, they care  for the staff,  they live like one big family .. God bless  Bruyère Continuing Care.

Nothing stressful in  Bruyère  is  always a team work.

My days was interesting, I was able to  undersand my work  and how to  approach it,mange my time, handle various  tasks  and responsibilities

A typical day at work is dynamic and engaging, with opportunities to learn and grow. I believe I've learned the importance of adaptability, effective communication, and teamwork. Management is supportive and encourages open dialogue, fostering a collaborative environment. Workplace culture is positive, with a focus on innovation and mutual respect.

The hardest part of the job is managing competing priorities and tight deadlines, which can be challenging but also drives growth. The most enjoyable part is solving complex problems and seeing the impact of my work on the team and organization. It's fulfilling to contribute to meaningful outcomes and build strong relationships with colleagues.
