Worked as a analyst on one of main CFIA projects, Was promised a contract duration of 7 months which can extend to one year . For the first 3 months they were praising the work and making future plans.

After 3 Months of work suddenly they found out that many of the previous versions of work were not completed by their existing team and needs lots of extra work done and hence they may not need me at that point of time. They also had severe shortage of funds as the entire project work was delayed by many years .

Suddenly they started Pointing out silly points like email written in a wrong style or meeting not held properly or mention something about in a incorrect way of dealing with an end user. The manager responsible was frequently exploiting the option of hiring and firing contractors as and when needed by pointing out silly mistakes.

The contract was suddenly ended in 4 months time with no notice period. Later i came to know that many other teams members were let go because of the poor planning from the project management team. 

The Govt. employees usually are a part of existing union and cannot be fired even if they don't perform VS A Govt. contractor who has to follow a contract which is written in such as way that any contractor can be hired and fired anytime against any promise made by recruiter. 

I would like to caution any contractors to think few times before joining a limited time period contract with CFIA as it can turn out to be a disaster and they will be left to hang in a difficult situation as the ethical value in the team is very low.

Worked as a primary inspector for years, and it's been one of the best jobs I've had. 

Good work environment, friendly and respectful peers and coworkers, and professionally handled. They provided necessary training for newcomers and brings everyone up to speed and are open to hearing questions or suggestions from workers. We've also had occasional free office lunches from time to time as well as some fun team building exercises. As for the job itself, we were encouraged to do the job at our own pace, as well as take necessary breaks, especially during hot summers.

Hardest part of the job would probably be getting in the job itself, as it may take a long while before they'll contact you for an interview. In addition, since you're working for the federal government, you may have encounters with people in the public who aren't that keen with government workers.

But overall, this is a great agency to work for. If you're looking into learning about the inner workings of inspection work, whether it's for food, plants or otherwise, then this job is a great gateway for that experience. It will be intimidating at first, but once you get past all the interviews and screenings, you'll find a very casual and respectful workplace. Highly recommend it, especially for university students looking to go into the industry.

The agency has been in a constant state of change, since the beginning. Which is fine, if you like that but it can also give some staff a feelng of instability and uncertainty.

Hiring policies prevent most levels from being promoted into higher positions. You have to compete for those positions. People not already working for the agency are only offered term positions that are 12months or less. To become a permanent employee, you have to compete again, against other internal employees.

The role as a food processing specialist inspector is a great job if you like constantly changing priorities and you don't mind having to completely drop what you have planned to respond to a food safety investigation. And if you're comfortable dealing with difficult or demanding people (public or industry representatives). 

Some days can be very busy and hectic other days more relaxed, where you can actually get some of your routine work done.

There are flexible work arrangements that support a healthy work life balance. Rates of pay and benefits are reasonable. There are opportunities for training to support professional development, if you choose to take advantage. From my perspective, the culture is more collaborative than competitive. 

Overall, it's been an enjoyable working experience for me.

Been with the agency for over 4 years now in meat hygiene. Not alot of room for advancement. The job is easy. The pay is good due to having a union. Colleagues are tough to work with. Negative atmosphere. The establishment is tough to work with. Nothing changes. Upper management is non existent. They make 6 figures to do what? Your supervisor isn't much help either as they don't want to be there or to deal with more issues. Training takes forever. Always short staffed. Colleagues have beat the system by chronically calling in sick. Alot of employees you cant fire or get rid of due to diversity and culture. This is no more than a job to pay the bills. The biggest issue is culture. This is an easy job. Everyone wants in to do nothing all day or the bare minimum. You are either appointed a term or indeterminate position. My status has not changed in 4 years. They are their own agency. As such they do not follow the federal employment act. Basically they can do whatever they want. Job security is low right now due to implementation of new programs implemented in the next year. They can get rid of terms without any questions asked. Indeterminate they have to at least give offer a position even if it's on the other side of the country.

I would like to tell you about my position as a Developmental Food Inspector with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. To ensure food safety, the Agency utilizes the CVS Program (Compliance Verification System) which involves aspects of Monitoring/Verification/Enforcement. As a Food Inspector for over thirteen years, I had the opportunity to maximize my skills involving: CVS management/leadership, Communication, CVS organization, Research, Quality Assurance, Sample Testing and processing, Auditing computer/hard file data records, CVS program development and CVS training experience. I was also involved as PSAC Union Vice President Local 55 and Health and Safety representative.
I have also received Vocational Training as a Shop Stewart which involved organizing, managing of the Tool Shop, and the distribution, auditing of tools and equipment. As the Shop Stewart I also became familiar with operating construction power tools and hand tools. While managing as Shop Stewart I also carried out duties as Health and Safety representative. Ensuring construction crews followed Health and Safety Acts and Regulations, carried out daily Safety Checks within onsite construction project

I loved my job as a CR-04 at a busy CFIA office. I loved assisting my supervisor, colleagues, and clients. My co-workers, supervisor, and colleagues were amazing and always so helpful and let me know that my work was appreciated. It was nice to work in a positive, laid-back environment. 

Unfortunately, due many lies and confusion, my contact was not renewed. First I was told that there wasn't enough work at the office to have a full time Administrative Assistant, and then I was told that were budgetary constraints, and that my salary was not included. This made no sense, and when I questioned and spoke up about it, I wasn't given a proper answer. I literally begged for my job and no one seemed to have any empathy or understand my situation. I later found out that about a month after my departure, that the budget was "magically" fixed and that a friend of RCI was being transferred from Calgary, to fill the position. I went to union and the union asked the RCI about it, and she placed the blame on me, saying that I didn't apply for a job pool that I couldn't find the job ad for.

Working at the CFIA has been my most recent and most rewarding job that I have ever had. The management has always been so hard working, professional, respectful and on top of all the changes to modernization at the CFIA. My employees have also been just the same. At the CFIA, I worked in the Animal Health Department, and I was dealing with clients on a one-on-one, face to face daily basis. I loved that part of the job as I feel that I am very good at working with the public and enjoy it very much. I learned that if you satisfy the customer (or client), then at the end of the day, you've done your job! There are always new challenges to be faced at work, and I am able to deal with those challenges, no matter what obstacles come my way. At the CFIA, the hardest part was dealing with very upset, and very angry clients. Sometimes they would take their frustration and anger out on me when it wasn't my fault, but my goal was to make them happy and satisfied customers, so I always did my very best to resolve their problems and go out of my way for them.

Was twice hired as a full-time term inspector (5-month terms) and fully vetted (medical, security/crim checked, hearing tested, DL abstract reviewed -- the whole nine yards). Tons of online training throughout the term. Lots of work with no overtime, but great work nonetheless. Loved it and excelled at it; got along well with f/t permanent inspectors. Thought I'd found my dream job, especially after the stressful first few months of getting used to the 1200-km trapping route driven every two weeks.

Prior to applying for Year Three, was told that the B.Sc. requirement would now be enforced (I have two Arts degrees), and that a younger colleague from another office would get my former position. Total bummer. I won't even mention the Phoenix debacle -- oops, I just did. Well, I had some hassles with an errant paycheque which was corrected thanks to the office's stupendously competent and proactive clerk -- but these hassles weren't anything like one of my colleague's.

The Agency has a lot of good people who do good work and we do have a vital role in food safety and regulation within Canada and with our trading partners. However they have hired a lot of people who truly have a poor attitude of entitlement and refusal to change their ways. The attitude is that seniority means advancement, however management ALWAYS says that is not the case but employees still don't believe this to be true and then file grievances. These employees who do not show any initiative to learn more and complete their job duties for some reason have not been let go continue to plague the work environment and know that management cannot do anything to them. This would be a great company to work for if it was not for the people who you have to tolerate and the office politics you have to navigate.

A strenuous and repetitive work requiring good physical state. I learn new things everyday about the Plant we audit and what we regulate on the establishment. Dealings with more than 2000 individuals may it be with management or the establishment's employees.•As Inspectors,"We are proud of the contributions we make to the quality of life of Canadians.
