I have been here for 15+ years, seen a lot of changes. Most recently the changes are all negative, management has taken it upon themselves to monitor employee movements via security cards.  Employee morale is at an all-time low, which is saying something considering all the rounds of layoffs we have had since CNOOC bought Nexen in 2013. This is not the Nexen of old, no one cares about you as an employee, your mental health, physical wellness and well-being are of no concern to management.  I would not recommend CNOOC as an "employer of choice"

From the beginning of 2013 it has been a rotating door of new CEO's, which therefore means layoffs.  Morale is low, pay is low and opportunity to advance is even lower. On an international stage and in Canada, they are not viewed as a good company. Many vendors won't work with a Chinese operated company.  Lots of layoffs in 2023, 45 people have left or been let go. My advice go work for a small O&G company that values people, where you're not a number and room for growth. 

Worked here for almost 20 years.  Many good things resulted from purchase of Nexen by CNOOC, but last couple of years have been very difficult given Chinese government bureaucracy, lack of decision making ability at local level, and focus on cost cutting.  I held a number of roles in a number of departments over the years and worked with wonderful, capable people.

Great co-workers. Very smart and fun people to work with. Learned a lot from them.

Bad communication from Management downward.

Wouldn't be surprised if CNOOC is out of North America by the end of 2023.

Poorly paid with very little regard for safety or their employees in general. Way to many incompetent and arrogant gatekeepers that don’t allow for any career advancement and keep you doing menial mundane tasks. The company is here to exploit Canadian resources on cheap labour for the greater good of China. Shame

Daily meetings. Management was very friendly and understanding. The hardest part of the job was that there wasn't any help. There was free coffee machine on every floor

When I was there the company was experiencing a lot of change which resulted in high stress environment. Another company where it really comes down to who your manager is,do your research on the group / manager before committing

Unfortunately they do not hire fresh graduates

I was doing my internship at the Nexen building. We had a game room that improved the work life balance. Once we moved to the bow, we lost it. The bow also didn't have a gym.

While it was still Nexen, the pay was good and the culture was pretty relaxed. They had some cool internal educational programs (excel courses etc.) that employees were encouraged to attend.
