COLUMBIA FUELS

Typical wheels to wheels fuel delivery company. Involves a lot of hose dragging out to fuel up machinery and fleets. Lots of construction site deliveries. Work is hard enough to put up with a lot of workplace drama of which there was a lot. 

Pay was ok with lots of overtime but your fellow drivers worked against each other.  With the exception of some good drivers the overall driver culture was toxic.  They looked very diligently to find fault with you and when they couldn’t they would come up with a non existent one. Small mistakes on you part were blown out of proportion to show how bad you are and their own mistakes were conveniently swept under the rug. Basically, the attitude was “ i am the only one who could do it right and the rest of you guys don’t know anything”. Some drivers spent hours in managers office telling him how great they were and how bad the rest of us drivers were. And unfortunately, the management listened to them. 

There was some favoritism too with some guys getting better and less labour-intense deliveries   then others depending on how much time they spent in the managers office.   

The dispatch is on the island so they are not familiar with the Lower Mainland reality which caused problems many times. 

If you have a thick skin to put up with all that, welcome to Columbia fuels. The good is they always paid on time and honestly. 

Working as a fuel delivery driver; it was really fun. You have to obtain "Transportation of Dangerous Goods" and maybe commercial driver license. For me, I was driving their pickup truck. I carried 1500L of diesel. So, compare to other guys I was the little guy with little truck. 

Pretty much, before you leave the parking lot. You will be checking your vehicle (make sure it's safe to be operated) than start your paper work. 

After paper work, you will drive to the gas station which is like 5 seconds away from the parking lot. And dispatcher will let you know, what type of diesel you need to fill up and which sites you will be heading to. 

It's very relaxing job. There is no rushing especially you are carrying fuels. The boss want everyone to drive safely. And no rushing. Just be there as safely as possible. All sites have different rules so be safe by have your PPE with you. 

The fellow coworkers, dispatchers and the managements are all friendly. If you don't know what you are doing, just ask them. They will teach you.

Being asked to jump from truck to truck with little training 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Most people are happy at the job .  Most work you do alone .

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Load your truck do a delivery or two then sometimes load again for the next day .

I enjoyed Columbia Fuels, I loved all my customers and had a great relationship with them all.

I worked on the phones, customers would call in and order thier oil for their furnaces.  I did some accounts receivable and payable.

I also ran the office here in Port Alberni when it was here.

The hours of this jobs are great and sometime you can go home early and sometime you can work remotely. Its nice to be able to help people all over Canada. Managment is not very strict and the other other departments are very helpful. There is a lot to learn and process and things can chnage quickly.

Worked there for a year before my location was sold to a new company. I almost immediately wanted to return to work for them. 
first class company, first class employees.

I was required to work afternoon shifts going into dark gravel pits etc. To do deliveries alone. Slippery conditions made it extremely unsafe. Home deliveries made more money than the commercial ones!

Inbound calls.  Busy Winters and quieter Summers.  Work environment good.  Management approachable and working in other departments was an option for me.

Install and service gas and oil furnaces. lifting and installing oil tanks. Very well versed in maintenance and servicing in oil furnace installing and keeping them working well
