This job implies the same responsabilities as any other cashier job. You are given a cheat sheet to remember the different codes. 
Where I had more difficulty was the work culture. Long-time cashiers display a child-like behaviour around customers, which I assume is to look friendly and to promote the customer service experience. This often urked me as I found it unprofessional and it could become a very slippery slope if it ends up encouraging predatory behaviour on the customers' part. On top of that, regular customers came in expecting all cashiers to act this way, which was disheartening. Some customers also complained if you don't start bagging their items right away, since the cashiers who have been there a long time, having much more experience, do so. Overall, it is an entitled clientele with an unprofessional front end team.
Many employees here lack emotional maturity. The manager would ignore employees who do not agree to take additional shifts or to switch shifts with others, often on a day's notice. This is beyond ridiculous, considering the schedule is posted three weeks ahead of time and changes every week, so employees must plan their personal lives around this. There is also occasional discrimination towards younger employees. Work-life balance is often disregarded and day shifts are given mostly to long-time employees. Anyone else is given evening and weekend shifts.
Advancement opportunities are practically inexistant. I asked to be integrated to the HR department and was led on about there being an opportunity there for me, only to be told that there had never been one in the first place.
Overall, a typical student job experience. My coworkers were great and fun to work with, but management needs to get it together and priority should be given to employee well-being rather than customer service at all costs.

At first this company seems great. A family owned independent grocer where "you'll feel like family". Unfortunately it is all a facade. Be careful of places who say they will treat you like family. It actually means you are expected to pull everyone elses weight. The people you see working there long term are only there because they are close to retirement and have nowhere else to go.

This place seems to run off of the pygmalion effect so, be prepared to fail if the other managers have a negative opinion of you. They will continually put sticks into your spokes and nothing you do will ever be good enough. Perhaps if you like to micromanage yourself to the store manager, it would be good enough. Otherwise, you will get in trouble for doing your job. You will be written up with no coaching or warning which is extremely frustrating. Any issues that are brought up are glossed over. Basically, they like to see you on your knees and work until you wreck your body mentally and physically.

They say you will feel like family. Ultimately, you are expendable. Please put yourself first and take care. Only work here as your last resort because you deserve better.

Tip: manager's salary is almost the same as a supervisor's hourly wage but, you have more responsibilities, higher expectations, and stress as a manager. 

The managers do not put in as much work as the supervisors and other employees. They are constantly leaving early and doing little work. You will be scheduled 7 days in a row with no overtime pay because its on different pay periods. Closing shifts followed by an early morning shift are not uncommon. Not enough people are scheduled during busy times which causes everyone working to be under a lot of stress. The managers are all friends and/or family so moving up is nearly impossible unless you're friends with them. On top of that, family/friends in the company get away with anything including verbally attacking other employees and there is no point in bringing it up to HR or the store manager since they are not going to reprimand family members or close friends. Takes months to receive a raise you were promised. Store manager cares more about profit and allows customers who have verbally attacked employees or even stole to continue shopping at the store. On a more positive note, the rest of the employees are a joy to work with, good part time job for students, good benefits if you're able to get full-time hours, most of the customers are nice, always free baked goods in the staff room, free pizza for employees on one day sale.

Have you ever wanted to work somewhere that's always short staffed, has equipment that's either broken or not working properly and not have enough ingredients or product to do your job? Well this is the place! Always working as a skeleton crew even when there is people available to come in. Equipment is never maintained and is left to break down and only then it will get fixed(after waiting six weeks for a part you can get at home depot). And constantly not having the ingredients to make the products. Management is non existent and its a free for all on shifts.  Never did meet the store manager the entire time I worked there(probably didn't miss much). The only great part about working here is your coworkers, maybe cause they are experiencing the same things as you, lots of laughs and jamming to music will at least get you through your shift. And if you want benefits gotta work full time and even then its not given to you till at least 7 months. 

This was my first post retirement job (2017)and having had previous food service experience I got a position in the deli. My experience was positive, I enjoyed working in the collaborate team environment and felt well supported by the supervisors and managers. Everyone was welcoming and supportive in getting me in the grove of the job and routine. The manager and supervisor were receptive to shift requests and special time off for appointments.  I have a whole new respect and understanding of folks who work in the grocery industry.  
As with any customer service job the majority of customers were great to serve but there are always a few that require your patience skills.  Overall I found the job to be fun. A big bonus is that you get 15% off your groceries (including sale items). 

Simply put management basically will say anything to you to fill your mind with a false sense of appreciation for hard work and loyalty; however, it is just manipulation and there is nothing real about management and employee relations at Country Grocer.  Basically, any appreciation by management is conditional and not genuine.  Fake place to work.  Nothing is real.  Was going to work for company long term, but decided that the misery of pretending to be fake in a fake environment caused me to impulsively quit my job.  Nobody is happy and are living from pay cheque to pay cheque.  The wages are exploitive, and if one works full time they can't afford to even pay the deductable for benefits like dental and glasses.  Glad I quit and no regrets!

I was responsible with customer service, returns & exchanges, cash, customer purchases, lottery and cigarette sales. I was to work quick for the fast lane, and to stay highly organized in order to maintain a proper work flow. 
I gained much experience with dealing with customers, and having greater responsibilities as a head cash.
I had always got along with co-workers/staff management and had become an even stronger peoples person when employed at the Country Grocer. 
I loved interacting with customers and working with the team at the Country Grocer. I always enjoy the cashier position as I am very experienced and have great problem solving skills.

Feeling like you will never be good enough for the managers and that you are always doing something wrong. Never get rewarded for the good work that you do

Very gossip oriented, the management isn’t trained properly, actions aren’t taken when big mistakes or negative things happen

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Get your till set up and if it’s busy start scanning people through, if it’s not busy you are expected to start cleaning and restocking

 - stress filled dysfunctional place
- overall poor communication
 - high expectations for minimal pay
 - available mentorship not helpful
 - retreats, Christmas parties, and free lunches are non inclusive
 - continuous "bad mouthing" previous employees
 - many rules for employees that don't apply to upper management
 - complaints are dramatized and the expected solution is to play into their game of charades
 - no matter how hard you work or how much profit you bring in, it will never be good enough for them
 - they will tell you how to do your job even when they don't fully understand what your job entails
 - if you're not constantly complaining about your job they think your job is easier than theirs and you're not working hard enough

I worked here for about a year, was told I would be working a rotating schedule of mostly mornings/days and a few closing shifts. Ended up becoming the closing shift supervisor and had one staff member for half the shift on most days. As a Supervisor, I was asked to handle the entire Grocery Department and Dairy department, assist at the front end (which could last 40 minutes to and hour at a time) and close the store with one High school kid. I also worked closings + weekends, and there was no budging on their tight schedules. Absolutely zero work/life balance and measly pay to stress yourself out for a bunch of lifers who still think its 1988.
