Caffè Nero

After a period of long service, there was a change in area manager. Up until this point I was extremely satisfied with all parts of my job and the culture I was a part of. Genuine family feel and a sense of belonging. However after the change in management all of this disappeared overnight, it became an exclusive club and if you were not in it, you were ostracised. A poor approach to flexible hours and life outside of the job. Un-cultural comments surrounding appearance and poor attitudes to mental health, and affected me supporting my team adequately. A considerable amount of my working career was spent with Caffè Nero and while the good years were great and something to be proud of, the last year made it impossible to continue and brought no benefits to my life or mental health. There was a time between national minimum wage increase and the yearly pay review for store managers where my trainee baristas were paid more per hour than I was. 

You apply to be a barista but in fact you will also be a cleaner and earning a minimum wage for it. When I closed the coffee I had to clean all the toilets, sweep, mop the floor and clean all the tables by myself. Sometimes even on days off they put you to go just to clean.
The Caffe is crowded all the time, the shifts are often super long, the care and concern with the employees simply do not exist. Stress all the time. You have to pay for your own food in the breaks (breaks are unpaid). Management was terrible and dont care about solve any employee problem.
I do not recommend working in this place at all.

I learnt how to talk to people. The only beneficial thing I can think of.

The longer your there the more your eyes open. The stress, the gaslighting. It becomes a chore. Having to smile at the rude belligerent customers, having the right to refuse service but not actually being allowed to use it because they want their sales. Constantly cutting down on everything but expect you to work to the highest standard. You don't get paid a living wage. You don't get paid enough for the standard they expect and demand. 

Do yourself a favour, don't work here.

All round a decent company to work for, though the pay isn’t very desirable for the amount of effort that goes in. 

Head office is supportive and engaging, yet also sometimes disconnected from store life. 

Area managers are really supportive, even if some goal are unreachable. 

Store managers do try their best to engage the team, and this can go well some months, and others also bad. 
When they cut hours, everybody gets on edge, yes it’s understood, but also very demotivating.

Made good relationships with regular customers. Very friendly environment and supportive team. Team morale is boosted with group activities and regular team meetings. Overall good place to work but the wage y increase with position is almost not worth it.

Great company for training and progression, however 48hrs expected of managers is far too much. Plus you will very often work over this due to sickness, holidays etc.
Hard working 10 hours a day every day, with very little break.

Worked at several stores within a short time period because the store I was hired for was not yet open and kept being delayed. Had some good experiences (flexible hours, fun, supportive coworkers) under good managers and negative experiences (demanding, gossipy, lazy/unengaged coworkers) under poor managers.

I enjoyed working at Cafe Nero, I had a great manager and lovely coworkers. The job had some wonderful regulars, and I was trained to a high standard. I liked getting to know the regulars. 

A fantastic family like company that brings people together working towards a common goal.
A hard but very rewarding job, if people is your thing then this is the job for you.
