Calgary Womens Emergency Shelter

Shelter Manager can not be trusted. Has issues with a lot of employees and lies her way through. Talks bad about other employees. Promises promotions and then doesn't follow through.  She fosters a toxic environment.  Shelter counselors are excellent but it's hard to work with a Manager who is turning people against each other and talking behind staffs back.
 There's no HR for resolution. It's an outsourced person who knows nothing about the staff or shelter and will always take Managers side despite multiple issues.  Looking for another job. 

Pros: highest paying shelter in Calgary 
Cons: Unsupportive management that is not transparent about their mistakes and are quick to chastise staff for their own (managements) shortcomings. 
No chance of promotion once you are hired, as they only hire externally, despite being unionized. 
Lack of communication between staff and management on different shifts, which negatively impacts the team and clients. 
You will often have to work short staffed, as shifts will not be filled; or will be missed by management who is supposed to look after the schedule. On call will not come in to support you. 
Conclusion, I wouldn't refer my worst enemy to this place.

I have a lot of fun at my job.  I enjoy working with children, and although it is a stressful environment that we work in, somehow, it doesn't feel stressful at all.  We are a strong team and rely on each other.  Communication is wonderful, and we ensure that we are all on the same page, to better able help our clients through this tough time in their lives.  We assess children to better help them through difficulties, through interaction and play.The most enjoyable part of my day is when a child has a breakthrough.  When I see a child smile.

Great place to work and lots of opportunities to learn and develop if you are a self starter willing to jump in with both feet. Culture of working on exploring your bias and how you contribute to oppression of marginalized groups and how the organization can better serve those groups without further perpetuating oppression and negative experiences for those in trauma. 

I love my job as I am able to connect every day with a team who is enthusiastic to help the women and children fleeing abuse. Everyday is different which I enjoy. There is lots of paperwork of course which is the down side to my day but some people love it. I have been here over 4 years and dont plan on leaving any time soon. I have a job with purpose and meaning so its easy to look forward to the day.

7 hours per day, good benefits coverage, healthy in financial and management! every year does fund raising programs to help abused womens and men! it did make many fives big difference! 
Amazing jobs!

A terrible place to work, very toxic environment. The management team is very unorganized. They expect you to understand everything you when you step into a new role. 

Gossipy and toxic. Shelter Management doesn’t engage or support staff. Shelter Management creates conflict between staff members by putting them against each other and talking bad about almost every employee. 

My experience with the staff was always positive but I had some issues over the years I worked their with the management that had been hired to run the program I worked in

i have learn compture skills in this company.
the hardest time i have when i get the cheques at once 100 bundles.
