Camp Tamarack

The management here, which at the end of the day, is the family who owns the place, is very discriminatory towards those who didn't go to the camp as children. Many of the staff are migrant workers so they use the opportunity to come to Canada as a way to get employees. I felt bad for them because they are not seeing Canada and Canadian people as a whole, but rather just the Camp people. They use tactics of constantly showering certain employees (that are usually ones who have gone to their camp as children) with awards and recognition in front of all the staff based on their discretion, and quite honestly its a tactic they use to make everyone work harder. The pay is very minimal equating to less than minimum wage for an 8 hour shift. Of course this is totally legal because of the camp policy the Ontario government has, but is in my opinion, not worth it. They don't pay you by the week and use the final pay check as a way to keep their workers working hard, because you will not get it if you get fired. The "room and board" in basically wooden boxes with age old, paper thin mattresses with no proper ventilation and bathrooms a considerable distance away. The food is basically carb overload and not really a very healthy diet, except for the salad bar at lunchtime. It seems like they are always trying to cut costs everywhere they can. You don't have a proper work/personal life balance because they don't allow you to leave the site after hours. There are no proper shifts, everyone is expected to be available to work all the time, except for the 24 hours they give you each week to leave. They constantly say "This is not a job its a lifestyle" to make up for their terrible working conditions, and basically brain washing everyone into submitting themselves to the job. I am now a full time educator, and even me loving children, I still wouldn't recommend working here. You will learn way more in education actually teaching children not basically being treated as a child when your a full adult. 

I enjoyed working with the youth and teaching them the basic parts of a canoe, how to use it, the safety measures taken when entering and exiting it.  They were each given a chance to paddle the canoe with the different strokes taught to them as well as the proper way of wearing their life preserver jackets.  
I also enjoyed supervising the youth during planned activities as well as  their leisure time, during and between meals.
I enjoyed the fact that there were a diverse set of youths from different ethnic backgrounds.  
I have learned how to better manage youths ( juniors and seniors alike) behavior through praises and consequences as well as modifications depending on circumstances.

24/7 days a week with the children of learning disabilities, low cognitive skills, behavioral issues.
Learned patience, how to cope with difficulties of all aspects. The importance of team building and gaining trust.
How to manage a summer camp: Meals, routine of children.
Coworkers were amazing they helped me get through the day.
The hardest part of my job was being away from loved ones.
The most enjoyable part of my job was being there for children who needed me and developing many friendships.

It was a school-based volunteer, and only being able to go if you had excellent work and marks for school. Teach younger generations of new sports and activities, get them to think outside the box. To break the shell and meet different types of people of the same age and grade.

Management put children and young teens at risk. Teenagers were allowed to go on 'town nights' with adult staff where alcohol was involved. As the health care provider I dealt with hung over 14 year olds, and STDs throughout the camp. Very surprising for a children;s camp.

A great job for the summer if your looking for a fun and responsible work environment. I consider this job to be one of the greatest I've had and I strongly encourage working at a summer camp, it's a wonderful experience.

I worked at Camp Tamarack for a summer and it was perfect. the staff is always friendly and little kids are always good to work with. The pay isn't for every one and neither are the long hours but worth the experience.

this is a great camp full of great people, it can be the most rewarding experience of your life, but it's not easy work. 

get into a specialization you enjoy, or an age range that works for you, and you'll be flying.

I worked here during the summer of 2018 and really enjoyed myself! The other staff members are amazing, the directors are wonderful, and the camp itself is gorgeous.
