What is the best part of working at the company?
The shift work was great, hard sometimes but if you could get over that then the days off were great because you wasn't there.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
What was once a great place to work has unfortunately seen a sharp decline in recent years. The current management style is characterized by inconsistent enforcement of rules; minor issues are often scrutinized for some, while the same behaviors are overlooked for others. This perceived favoritism has created a fragmented environment rather than the "team" atmosphere the company claims to value.

​Furthermore, the employee experience has been stripped back significantly. Most previous perks have been eliminated, and even company-planned events now require employees to pay for their own meals. This lack of investment in staff, combined with the management approach, has driven morale to an all-time low. It no longer feels like a company that genuinely cares about its people.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The physical site is in poor condition, with aging equipment that frequently breaks down and a facility that requires constant structural repairs. This lack of investment in the workspace mirrors the internal culture, which has become increasingly toxic. While there was a slight, temporary improvement recently due to some necessary changes in personnel, the underlying issues remain. The atmosphere is often stressful, and the combination of failing infrastructure and poor leadership makes for a difficult daily experience.

This company suffers from deeply flawed leadership. Management decisions are consistently driven by favoritism rather than performance or accountability, creating an unfair and highly demoralizing work environment.
Employee health and safety are not treated as real priorities. Concerns raised by staff are often ignored, minimized, or brushed aside, which reflects a serious lack of responsibility from leadership. This not only affects morale, but also puts employees in uncomfortable and sometimes unsafe situations.
There is little to no transparency in decision-making, and communication from management is inconsistent at best. Employees are expected to perform under unclear expectations while others are given advantages without merit.
Overall, this is an organization where employees are undervalued and easily replaceable in the eyes of management. The culture is driven more by internal politics than professionalism or respect.
I would strongly advise anyone considering this company to proceed with caution and seriously evaluate other opportunities.


Certified power engineers- stay clear. Do not work or apply here just because this plant is local. Management is new, inexperienced and uncertified with hazards regarding steam boilers on site. 

I was working here while new equipment was being installed in production. During installation, a 3rd party company supplied a temporary boiler that was placed on site for use. Management let this boiler sit pressurized and attached to the plant process for multiple days without a certified operator checking on it. Both maintenance and operators brought this up as a hazard once complacency was observed within management. Management jokingly stated that they would provide overtime for the boiler operator on weekends to complete checks, which never happened the entire time the boiler was on site. 

Management favours leftist fads like using improper pronouns. Friendly co workers and slow production atmosphere. Good position for those who nonchalantly enjoy the bottom of the totem pole with a free lunch here and there. 

Unfortunately what was once a great company is seeming to continuously go down hill.

There is little appreciation shown towards staff who go above and beyond so no one seems to put in any extra effort.

Whenever something goes wrong upper management looks for a scapegoat where they can. There almost seems to be an old boys club, and if you don't agree with them you don't fit in.

If you work in the grain group, there will be lots of overtime that will not be paid. Unless it has changed, I was told to keep track of my hours and take it in lieu, but there is no company tracking service so when I had worked 8 hours over time I wasn't allowed to take it in lieu as there was no company record of it.

Sites are understaffed, leaving people to do 2-3 jobs at once. Prior to myself leaving I felt I was doing the work of 2 people. As nothing changed I eventually left this role due mainly to this.

Safety is said to be top priority, but actions speak louder than words. 

The upper/mid management has extreme favoritism which affects salary/wages of all employees, as well as budgeting towards all of the locations for repairs.

If you are an operator ensure you track all overtime hours you work, and demand to be paid for them. The company will try and get you to take time in lieu which is often forgotten about, or dismissed as if you are making up the hours you have worked.

Bad workers are often kept on due to the union (even non-unionized employees).

There has been a lot of staffing changes, forced retirements, and overall downsizing leaving many people working 2-3 persons worth of work alone.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Maintence shifts 4*10hr.  Free golf membership. Many company sponsored events. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Management is terrible.. It consists of past employees who were once on the tools and were terrible at that so they were moved to management/supervision and it turns out they are even worse at that position. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Bearable for a year or two. After that it's all down hill. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Clock in work... Clock out.. Two weeks go by get a pay check.

So far my experience Canada Malting Has been great I got my seniority in 4 1/2 months due to plenty of overtime I became an operator within a year which was really cool it’s a great place to work it’s all I have to say Four days on (12 hour shifts) and four days you can’t beat that, I have learned plenty their Malthouse Operator and Control room operator who is responsible to load rail cars at a certain weight that is our finished product the weight must be bang on.

Working at Canada Malt. was an interesting challenge. The days could feel long and at times it is up to you to find work, wether it be cleaning areas of the factory that need it or servicing some machines. Collaboration is key as well. Being able to effectively identify problem in the workplace and either handle them or report them to the proper staff is crucial to ensuring a smooth work day. Not everyday is busy but don't expect the down periods to last long.

Canada Malt is a great place to work with BBQ's, "lunch n learn's" and great management. The only drawback is the inability to accommodate overtime and future jobs since it is such a strict union. THEY TAKE SAFETY VERY SERIOUSLY, you will be provided with all equipment necessary to do a job safely.

Midnight shifts suck.
Management is inexperienced. Some
good people. works kind of hot and dirty in the kilns. Rotten grain smells terrible. Have to spray javel chemical to prevent mold and rotten grain often without a mask. Head office out of town controls everything the Thunder Bay management are just there for show.
