Plan, coordinate, manage, monitor, and evaluate the operations and delivery of messes’ activities and facilities.

Enforce the requirements for health, hygiene, safety, and security standards and programs.

Ensure strict enforcement of provincial liquor legislation and DND, CF, and B/W/U policies concerning the responsible serving of alcohol, employee drinking restrictions, and customer behaviour.

Manage employees.

Manage employees’ work schedules and monitor employees’ performance.

Manage employees’ training and development in required certification to meet provincial legislation in bar services.

Authorize, monitor and document financial transactions/commitments.

Develop and implement marketing strategy for messes’ activities and facilities.

Coordinate functions, determine staff requirements and administer the protocol, table settings and arrangements, seating plans, table service and decoration, special menus, and beverage requirements.

Manage all messes’ departments to meet operational demands (bars and events).

Attend all major messes’ functions to supervise messes’ staff, personally greet and speak with patrons, and administer general arrangements.

Respond to membership feedback and messes’ committee’s directives, keep members, PMCs and the responsible managers informed of current issues and concerns, and recommend changes to products or services where appropriate.

Develop and prepare messes’ activities, bars operations budgets and business plans.

Authorize and monitor expenses for all messes’ activities and operations.

Prepare timely and accurate financial accounting and operational reports.

Conduct periodic audits of operations and records.

Receive and reply to complaints from messes’ customers.

Assume responsibility for the management of the liquor licenses.

Ensure the application of financial, administrative, and operational controls.

Monitor and control the use of messes’ equipment and facilities assets.

I would say that working for CFMWS is generally a positive experience, with a lot of pluses, including the social atmosphere, which is excellent, and the people, the majority of whom are great.

That being said, there is always an undercurrent of politics running through everything, which puts a damper on things like creativity, taking risks, and other things necessary for a content development position where such things need to be supported more fully.

I think this is a shame, as I am sure that less fear leads to better leadership and more security for everyone.  However, this is nothing new to those familiar with government work.

I was employed by the company several years (on amd off), during which time I successfully revitalized a program that was on the verge of collapse, after covid, through my innovative practices. Upon the expiration of my contract, the company chose to extend it. However, the job was restructured and placed under a different management team. Unfortunately, the new management displayed toxic behavior, fostering a competitive and divisive work environment among employees. When the time came to rehire for the position, the company surprisingly selected an individual who lacked both experience and leadership qualities. Consequently, less than a year later, the company is already seeking to fill the position once again.

From the senior managements up to the CIO, this organization is incapable of much positive : whether it be serving their client base (no projects are delivered close to expectations) or serving the people the Mission statement claims, they do not care. It is an organisation driven by ego and personal gain (Apps Services Director, Ops Director), they promoter incompetence (CIO and others) and cultivate a culture of dis-interest, poor quality dis-enfranchisement of the tech resources that do care and are competent.

Working at CFMWS has been a fulfilling experience, especially knowing that the work directly supports the well-being of Canadian Armed Forces members and their families. The organization fosters a strong sense of community and purpose, which makes the day-to-day work feel meaningful.

The team environment is generally supportive, and there are opportunities to grow professionally, particularly if you're proactive. Management is approachable and open to feedback. Work-life balance is respected, and the benefits are good.,

Management think they own the place. No system in place for the values and ethics they pride them selves for having. HR is a joke! No help whatsoever. Kingston location was the worst experience of my life! Cried everyday I was there from 3 months on the job until 2 years later when it came to an end! Absolutely the biggest bunch of selfish ppl in Kingston ! Absolutely no care or concern for the hard working lower employees. Management is out for themselves and that’s it. 

I worked as a bar supervisor for the NOM back in 2022/23. The NOM was run by a small group of hard working (at the time I worked there) ladies. Management allowed the workers to have responsibilities and freedom in their jobs. We created new menus and worked together to make the NOM an enjoyable place to work, eat, drink, and play. 

Terrible leadership - encouraged gossip amongst employees, created a toxic work environment. No support when spouse deployed - lack of understand or compassion when children are sick. High turnover rate due to management allowing supervisors to abuse their staff - only some supervisors called out for this behaviour. Employees rewarded for bad behaviour as long as they generated sales. Have never been happier since getting out of this job. 

Upper management plays favourites. Very hard to move up in the organization as the hiring practices are atrocious. Organization does very little to help you move up in the organization. Most staff is underpaid too. I wouldn't recommend CFMWS to anyone until management starts looking out for employees. There is a reason why there is a retention issue within.

I loved working for cfmws. Especially, as a military spouse. They understand the lifestyle and are very supportive. During my time with them I got to meet lots of people and form great friendships. The cons are the pay isn’t the greatest depending on the position and when you have to relocate for a posting there’s no promises that the next base will have a job for you.
