Canadian Maritime Engineering

CME Nanaimo is a group of smart confident shipyard workers. It's a smaller yard but very friendly and cooperative. The people there all work as a team. Good focus on safety and doing things right. Work is normally on the regularly scheduled hours and days. Overtime is very rare and weekends is only under critical events such as catching the tides for a launch. All of which is voluntary and with as much notice as possible. Breaks are well established and supported. Management is supportive to reasonable. employee input. Most safety equipment beyond the basics are provided for everyone as needed. One of the core considerations of working in a shipyard is that the work stability can be variable. There may be solid steady work for months and then layoffs for many more months.

It wasn't a very good company to work for

Lack of appropriate work, work environment was stressful and unfriendly

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Poor,
Shop in disarray, lack of required tools, with alot of yelling and a little name calling

In 20 years in my trade,
This was the worst company I ever worked for

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Co workers showed up drunk or high. Multiple adult tantrums, with the least amount of pay offered.

Be weary of applying if you’re anything but a straight and white man, depending on shop location and management it’s best to just stay away. Very hard to talk to management about issues. Pay structure in non-union shops are inconsistent, you’ll make less being a red seal than an un-ticketed tradesman. The work itself is great, as long as you get along with your coworkers. 
Never had an issue taking time or needing time off as long as it’s communicated.

Making sure the was completed on time

Great, everyone helps out to complete the project

Safety meeting and plan of the day

I have found that through working with this company that the do try to help with the good working policies and good working conditions for all workers to be able to do their jobs effectively and should any issues arise they are there to listen and work through the issues to bring it to a satisfactory resolution for all whomever may be involved.

Cme- Port Alberni  has a number of projects on the go, so there should be some steady work for some time.  The company has grown quickly so there are some issues with organization/management and planning.  Overall this is a great group of talented workers and a good team. 

All good fellas to work with in all areas of the shop including the welders and mechanics. The machine shop however, manager will curse out and belittle employees in front of others. If you dont mind that kind of thing then it's a pretty good place to work

One of the most unorganized work places I have ever worked for in my working career. Once jobs are finished they usually lay people off. 

Lack on training for job specific projects. Hiring foreign workers while laying off others. 

A typical day at work would be anywhere from 7 hours to 13 hours a day.
Pay was great.
But it wasnt steady work. (Laid off for months now)
I loved the fast paced work and it was a great crew.

Face paced work environment. Great group of employees to work with and management very personable.
Great place to learn new skills and meet professionals from around the globe.
