Canadian North

Upper management has no respect and does not speak to employees nicely. Middle management is AWESOME like coordinators are. 

Call centre (reservations) shift work is based on a bidding system by seniority. As well as holidays. Pay is low. Not very much room for advancement. 

Only get 2x 15min breaks or 1 30min break, they legally get around that by letting you off 30min early?  So the shifts are 8h shifts instead of 8.5hours with an hour break or 30 min and 2x1im breaks. I really did not enjoy that. 

In slow times (very few phone calls) you were not allowed to talk to one another. It was very much like cattle lined up unless the manager wanted to talk you were not allowed. It was really weird. Atmosphere was great when manager was not there and just the supervisors (coordinators) 

Manager doesn’t seem to respect employees. 

Mid management was fantastic though. 

For the amount of training needed and information retained, the pay was not adequate. At all. 

Not enough diversity in staff. It’s a northern company and not enough northerners represented at the head office in Kanata. Also cultural training should be provided to all employees as it’s hard for people who live in Ottawa to understand what living in the Northern communities first air serves is like.

Typical day at work is 12 hour shifts, that are never the same. I have learned to be a leader who listens, and an employee that can manage challenging day to day operations with professionalism and positive outcomes. 
Management within the company listens to their employees, however could excel more from their employees multiple years of experience which not only validates the employee, it also allows for opportunity for growth and understanding. 
The culture within Canadian North is a strong family bond however I believe that there is a division within some of the departments which is primarily portrayed as lack of accountability. 
The hardest part of the job is seeing some personnel take advantage of their positions, with no recourse. Many employees are not required to put forth the same hours, effort or professionalism that others are required to uphold. 
The most enjoyable part of the job is the knowledge that you gain, the people that you meet (who become your second family) and being able to separate what you are responsible for and what others are responsible for. I have learned to listen closely.

I see other reviews from various departments, now here is one from the maintenance department. It is a very laughable maintenance operation with mostly pilots running the maintenance department behind the scenes. The pitiful premium they pay ACA signing authority just doesn't make it worth it to HAVE signing authority. Speaking of signing authority, if you were to end up into working Heavy maintenance you would be expected to sign for the work of 5 or 6 apprentices which usually results in a Q&A nightmare. Seems like there's more managers than actual maintenance personnel. Line maintenance will get you nothing but straight night shifts.  No night shift premium, unlike places like Air Canada, and other "industry peers" which is a term to company loves to throw around a lot. All in all, very doubtful someone would enjoy working at a place like that.  I would discourage anyone from doing aircraft maintenance to begin with, but if you still feel compelled, I HIGHLY discourage anyone from doing it at Canadian North

Living and working in the Canadian North offers numerous unique benefits. The sense of community is strong, and the lifestyle offers peace, cultural richness, and a deep connection to the land. For many, the opportunity to work closely with northern communities and contribute to essential services is a valuable advantage. The cost of living is often offset by various northern allowances, and travel benefits provided by employers can be a great support. However, one of the ongoing challenges is that wages frequently fail to keep pace with the high cost of living.
In many cases, workers face higher prices for food, housing, and essentials without the compensation seen in other remote or demanding work environments. This wage gap makes it harder to save or invest in long-term goals. While the northern experience is meaningful and offers growth, more competitive wages would help attract and retain skilled workers who want to build a life in the North.

Overall was pretty good, with some downsides.
-The benefits were great, although not much time off to use benefits. Affordable cargo was great especially up here.
-The hours are pretty decent, but overtime is often required and can suck if you value non-work time.
-Great management, and overall communication with staff. But on the other hand there is a fair share of a feeling of negativity with staff (gossip, favoritism, unnecessary drama, unprofessional, etc.) which can be easily solved but had to put awareness on it.
- it was cool to work with the community, helping the people. As an inuk it was cool to meet other people from throughout the territory I otherwise wouldn't have met and connect with. As well as seeing family pass by.
- Not much flexibility as it comes down to whoever worked the longest who chooses the best shift, leaving newcomers with the not-so-good ones. But wasn't really a problem for me.
- Can be very draining and mentally taxing, if I'm being honest.




Nobody else wants to work nights in the arctic. Anyone who applies can easily get a job here. You do not need much school or know about aircrafts. Easy place to work as the manager is gone fishing. 

a typical day was getting to work with a a diverse culture of people everyday from all across the world, I would check customers in and when all have checked in we would go to the gate and 1 would take the tickets and chq id and input to the computer and 1 other would take the passengers out to the plane even -50. The manager was in the office a lot but was always there when need be. we had 2 coordinators that ran the show and they were amazing always helpful. the hardest part of the job was telling someone the flight has been cancelled due to weather and next flight in 2 days. for me the most enjoyable part was meeting different people of the world listening to the stories they had but the best was being outside watching the planes take off and land

Work in Iqaluit is rotational, with lodging and food provided,  for the Cargo and Ramp. The company is held up by dedicated employees from the Atlantic provinces,  in spite of poor management and what seemed to be high turn over.   The pay is basically minimum wage, so great if this is your first job.  If you make it through training, you will be forgotten about.  Trainers don't care about you after your initial 3 weeks, and often get your names mixed up with other trainees which will get you marked from there on out.  Lead Hands, Coordinators, often do most of training depending on who the trainer is.  Best to just visit Iqaluit, and get proper job in own town, and save your time.  

The work position entailed customer relations, Able to work 
in high pressure situations, typical day was opening the counter prior to 9Am and close at 4-5pm depending on the day, A lot of the work was booking and checking in clients that were either traveling from or to Norman wells, the Work place was enjoyable, There were up to 4 companies in the airport, and each one worked together respectfully and professionally, Hardest part of the job, was the schedule for work which was M,W,F,S. The enjoyable part was meeting new people travelling to the north on vacation, first time or life long dream to see northern lights.
Through this prior job I learned a many good skills in regards to customer relations, on how to handle a unruly client or upset passenger,

Extremely busy - customer service position dealing with employees and vendors, a great deal of photocopying and database maintenance.  

Being an airline have learned much about aircraft and aircraft documentation.   As well we are moving more towards a paperless environment, so have learned how to load manuals to a web site, to send e-notifications, how to use Adobe Acrobat to create/flatten documents; create CDs and DVDs

I am the only person in the Library, however I work closely with the Publications Dept.

The job involves a great deal of lifting and packing of documentation which can be difficult

I enjoy customer service and the constant changing environment which allows me new challenges to conquer.
