Canem calgary supervision enjoy their slaves to the company. Ones that will jump at anything they ask them to do. They do not make safety a priority. Workers are getting electrocuted involved in near misses that has the potential of one day becoming a fatality if they do not correct their way of supervision. They do not care to follow any lock out tag out policies or attempt to set them in place due to the extra time it will add into tasks. previous near fatality were directed by supervision  not to mention anything in writing a report to try and keep a higher saftey rating in hope of underbidding the next job. If one does report unsafe work practices within a few weeks that person gets laid off due to shortage of work, while they still hire new employees shortly after. As for the wage. They will pay Lethbridge 32.00 an hour with no overtime, while they choose to bring in favored employees in the company from northern alberta at 40.00. OT and LOA. Beware. If you are a new hire to be hired in Lethbridhe althought from Calgary you will only recieve 32.00 with no OT,or LOA. The calgary staff basically treat Lethbridge like they are of no value, and keep their pay so low with fewest hours to try and make it impossible for any of them to get ahead in life. 32.00 is a comfortable wage, if you have no bills in life lol. you waste your life working here  just to make an ammount to pay bills lower class living  and hope that bad luck doesnt happen. sick day, vehicle repair, replace stolen tools. Once you get a string of bad luck, The amount they now pay you is no longer enough to stay afloat and you slowly become in debt the longer you are with them. They expect more than whats legal out of a worker, its sad to see so many guys in debt that they are trapped with this company. On a positive note, my experience is the Lethbridge workers are good guys to work with, its sad we get this taken advantage from. If only we had a job stuart to stand up for us that wouldnt lose his job for bringing up what we do

worked for a company and was leading a small crew teaching people and was doing lots before i worked for this company. Just a blue print and a list of things that needs to be done and off we go. Unfortunately due to economic reasons, the company went sour and everyone got laid off.   I was pretty exited to start with this company and was hoping to stay for as long as possible.  So just to give some examples of how i was treated. Asked where one of the rooms are within the first few days in a huge site, got the eye rolling treatment. Asked what info you need to put on the harness safety sheets (we used to just throw on the harness and work without safety sheets at my previous company), got yelled at and was told i should know this while the journeyman was throwing the harness around, the harness given to me did not have labels..... Tried my best to get things for the journeyman, running around getting stuff but the journeyman still threw things around, pretty much angry before work even started. Gave an idea to the journeyman and was told it was a stupid /bad idea and we couldn't do it just to overhear the journeyman telling the foreman "i have a great idea" and repeated word to word what i said. Horrible communication skills (pretty sure being in school for 8 years in college/ university and being able to lead a crew, im pretty sure my English is competent). Asked for clarification because the tin bashers  were bashing away (say 5 ft away) and i couldn't hear a thing, just to see the jman go into a huge rage throwing things around and yelling at me. Common sense tells me if the journeyman is trying to measure a long distance and the tape measure keeps falling i should help out to support the tape measure just to get yelled at for helping out. The list goes on and on but i guess it boils down to who you work with. there are definitely good sides to the company though.

Probably the worst company I have worked for in years. Supervision doesn't know all the procedures or how to properly follow them. They tell you to follow  procedures when you  are hired but that goes out the window as soon as you get to site. If life saving procedures are brought up to supervision they ignore it or lays off the person that brought it up. It's more of take risk and get it done company. This company favours the Calgary staff they bring into town for jobs with higher wages, overtime and leadership roles. Many incidents are swept under the carpet or kept quite such as people getting electrical shocks from circuits that are not locked out and not complete but we're turned on. If these are mentioned it's a laugh. The foreman tell you to pencil whip hazard assessments before the day starts or the doc you half a hour for not filling out safety paper work on your own time. These  are supposed to be filled out in your work area but no time for safety. If a local worker takes off any time for appointment s or anything be prepared to work late to make it up. The supervision belittles the locals with remarks to other trades onsite, or picks your work appart till the find something they don't like about it. Like linning up couplings in a wall rough in. They say they won't get out of bed for Lethbridge wage 32 / hr and laugh about it because they are at 39-45 /hr .

I believe this company is going to be involved in a major incident if they don't change there ways.

The benefits were really good and they made an effort to have office events such as picnics, but the turn out was very low. Morale was awful because the managers gave out too much work for amount of people in the office. Raises were minimal at best (even before the economy went bad) and recognition for jobs well done was non existent. If you arrived on time and left on time you were criticized for not working over time (for free) even if your workload did not require over time. 

Vacation and sick days were average and getting time off was relatively easy but they always wanted to know why you wanted the time off and what you were doing on your vacation. 

They strongly recommended people not get part time jobs if they were in need of extra money, they said having a part time job would prevent you from advancing in the company.

Most co-workers were good and easy to deal with. There are a couple people in administration that are extremely difficult to deal with and always looking for the next back to stab.

They recently moved into their new office which is quite nice but are not willing to hire cleaning staff to properly clean the larger building (very cheap with the budget) and expect the receptionist to pick up the slack (not in her initial job description).

Some employees made an effort to bring the staff together for parties or group outings but management rarely participated.

Working with Canem was one of the better jobs I've had in the past, and I'd certainly recommend it:

+Good benefits
+Provided quality certification training like fall arrest and WHMIS; but it took a while, and they don't do it unless there are a lot of workers that need the stuff
+Most of the people I worked with were awesome, and it seems like Canem does a decent job of putting together good teams and separating bad ones.
+Typically the foremen/supervisors I worked under were helpful, friendly, and I feel like I learned a decent amount here
+Pay is pretty standard, but there was plenty of overtime when things were busy, and they were generally okay about taking time off as necessary.

-It's probably pretty standard for companies like this, but there were definitely some hotheads, micro-managers, and general ball-busters among the higher-ups that I feel pretty fortunate not to have worked with on the regular
-Some of the aforementioned individuals had no issues letting employees know how replaceable they were, and job security is pretty tight when there's not much work on the go, but that part's nothing unusual
-There's some favouritism going on and if you're chummy with the "inner circle", you're definitely better off in the company.
-Seems like those in charge of hiring/firing overvalue numbers that look good on paper like maximum hours worked, and undervalue quality work and team dynamic.

Got hired for specific job. Brought up safety concern at safety meeting after that all the chicken stuff started. Lots of young inexperienced workers that were intimidated by someone with a lot of experience. Very disorganized. Foreman and Superintendant with very little experience and unable to answer tough questions on material they should know. Project boss a control freak constantly threatening workers. No interest in listenening to new ideas. I was fired with no just cause, however, i believe it was because i figured out how they were scamming the company ,we were hired by,out of thousands of dollars.Constantly changing their minds on how they wanted job done. The whole company is a joke. Stay away from them the money is not worth it and the useless CLAC union wont help you when you do get canned. I had no shop stewart and i had no warnings that i wasnt doing the things the way they wanted and iam 100% positive that i was set up by a young punk that got his nose out of joint because i got the job he wanted. He has less than 5 years experience, i have over 25.

I started my Electrical apprenticeship with Canem back in 2006 and was placed on a team that had ongoing renovation contracts with a select hospital/university.

Our two managers were very good at their jobs and had an ability to both teach you anything you wanted to learn, whether it be installation practices, tips or estimation/leadership questions.

The workplace culture with other Canem employees was very good. I was able to build relationships with this crew, feel connected, supported and trained properly. I can't recall ever having a bad day (other than not being able to grasp something) and always had support above or alongside me.

The hardest part of the job was in the initial stages, as a 1st and 2nd year apprentice, learning everything at once.

The most enjoyable part of this job was the care, compassion and helpful nature of all employees and management. I didn't feel afraid to ask a question. I felt like everyone was there to help each other succeed.

Canem System's has a pretty standard work week. 40 hours a week, with expected overtime when required.

I didn't learn much to be honest. Most of it was pretty standard commercial stuff as you would expect to see.

I never really dealt with the higher management of Canem System's, however their foreman/lead hands were very much a mixed bag. Poor leadership can really break an employees spirit, this can stay with an individual for years leaving them bitter and requiring therapy. However on the other spectrum there were some really great leaders who lead through example and integrity. These are the types people who should be in leadership positions.

The culture is pretty typical of any company of its size.

The hardest part has always been towards dealing with Canems leadership. As a company this large it should be really do better by its employees.

The best part of the job are the workers. I have nothing but respect for what they can endure on a daily bases.

At Cigar Lake Uranium mining site canonbie preformed as well as can be expect, being as this was their first job site outside of the AECON group. Each day we traveled down 480 to 500 meters underground to be under the ore. we built the concrete forms needed to carry out the processes needed to pulverize mix and pump the ore to the surface. Management did require change at the site at its highest level due to the inexperience that was shown by that person. The hardest part of this job was winter, I guess. Not that it was cold, in the mine winter and summer it was around 14C. No it was going down in the morning in the dark and coming back out in the dark. That meant that one never saw the sun for 2 weeks at a time.
The MOST enjoyable part of the job was DINNERS. The cooks there were of the chef variety. The mix and change from day to day and even week to was fabulous( I think this was due to the camp being of smaller size compared to the large oil sand sites I was used too).

Canem Systems Victoria is an excellent place of employ for enthusiastic individuals who possess a hunger for knowledge and physical challenges. With many talented and experienced individuals in their employ I would strongly recommend any apprentice seeking employment to place Canem Systems high on the list of pursuits.
Canem also offers a variety of work environments each bringing there own challenges and rewards in a continuous learning package.
One must earn ones place which may not always be easy, but once earned the rewards of that "family" feeling are well worth it.
Emphasis is on quality, efficiency and last but not least safety as it should be in any company, again being rewarded with safety awards as accident free hours accumulate.
